  1. I dunno about that, you can't polish a turd. Their Mania match was one of the worst PPV matches that I've seen in years.
  2. Yeah, I'm coming around to this. Fun match so far. As much as I want to shit on WWE for the marketing of this match, I probably wouldn't be staying up until 3am to see what they were going to do if this was booked as a vanilla wrestling match.
  3. I'm not sure what to make of this. The match itself is solid, but the presentation makes this feel like a joke. If WWE are clearly taking the piss with this, why should I care about this?
  4. Drew's not quite wrestler of the year (hell, if we are sticking to main roster WWE, I'd rate Bryan, Baszler, Gulak and Cesaro comfortable ahead of him), but he's a likable top babyface and that's more important for WWE than having another wrestler who can churn MOTYCs every few weeks. I'm not against campy wrestling segments like this, but this really is crap and making these kind of matches lose their uniqueness.
  5. Eh, it's only been six weeks since the birth of cinematic wrestling and I'm already sick of it.
  6. Yeah, that was Lashley's best match. This has been a pretty enjoyable show so far, all things considered.
  7. I still think Mcintyre is winning this, but I think Lashley has a chance. Despite Lashley being reckless, this has been fun.
  8. Lashley nearly killed Mcintyre with that botched spot. I think this is the only match where I'm not completely sure who's going to win.
  9. Cole's a good commentator when Vince isn't in his ear. Watch him at that UK title tournament a few years back, and you'll see that he's actually decent. The handicap match was enjoyable enough, but the result was never in doubt. Miz and Morrison looked good working together to take out Braun. I still haven't seen Bryan vs AJ yet. No idea why they didn't do it on this show.
  10. Sheamus versus Hardy was exactly what I wanted out those two, minus the botches. Sheamus is great as a stiff bully and Hardy is good at milking for sympathy. Shit finish aside, Asuka got a fun match out of Nia Jax.
  11. The Extreme Rules logo was well in the need of a makeover. The new one looks good. Any time they book a singles title in a handicap match, it always ends up being forgettable. There's only so much you can do with that type of booking. This has the potential to be fun. Sheamus is always at least mildly entertaining.
  12. Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen a good Lashley match. The guy isn't awful, just incredibly dull. The only Lashley match that could interest me on paper is if he ever faces Lesnar.
  13. Evening lads. I'm going to try and stay up and watch this as I have nothing else to do. Piss poor card on paper. I'm mainly watching this to see what they're going to do with Orton/Edge.
  14. This was a perfectly acceptable match that struggled to keep my attention during parts of it. Perhaps it was a bad idea to watch Choshu and Tenryu's stellar brawl that they had a month later before seeing this as I was left quite disappointed by their interactions here. They don't interact much and they are mostly slower paced compared to what they were like when they fought a month later. The IWE guys were great here. They've had years of experience wrestling each other by this point and it really shows. There's some fun exchanges to be found, but I really dug the spot where Teranishi tries to counter a back body drop by landing on his feet, not a spot that I was expecting in a wrestling match in 1985! ★★¾
  15. Man, Choshu is the king of sub ten minute matches. This was a bombfest which sees Tenryu score a lariat on an unsuspecting Choshu just as the match begins. Tenryu beats down the babyface until Choshu finds an opening. Choshu spend a good few minutes trying to lock on the Scorpion Deathlock, but Tenryu keeps blocking it. Usually I'd find this boring, but these two kept me engaged. Tenryu is great at playing the cowardly heel as he refuses to get back in the ring after escaping Choshu's grasp. The ending sees Tenryu failing to keep Choshu outside the ring which sees him eating a nasty apron back drop and getting counted out. The ending might of been a non-finish, but I thought this wrapped everything up in satisfying manner. ★★★★½
  16. This how you organically turn a heel into a babyface. Dick Murdoch tries to get Dibiase to give up his title shot. Dibiase might be a heel, but he's not an idiot, so he refuses and takes a beating for his troubles. He is bloodied and it looks like the match is going to be called off, but Dibiase knows that he HAS to fight as this isn't an opportunity that he might get again, so he returns to the studio, all bandaged up and with the crowd firmly on his side. The match itself isn't anything too special. Flair is Flair, but Dibiase puts in a career performance. His cut is opened up and the blood soaks through his bandages, creating a ghastly visual. Dibiase lands a number of big moves, but he's unable to follow up because of the blood loss. This is all over within seven minutes when Dibiase is counted out when he's unable to answer the countout. Post match sees Dick Murdoch return to drop Dibiase on his head with a nasty brainbuster onto the concrete. ★★★¾
  17. The prematch promos are something else. I love how effortlessly Flair switches from going to a cocky yet calm promo to an absolute enraged man in a matter of seconds. I was less thrilled at him calling Reed a monkey. Reed looked like a million dollars here and he's a thousand miles away from the unmotivated Butch Reed I would watch in the WWF a few years later. This was a fairly solid TV match for the time. This is all impromptu, so Flair is trying to get out of here as quick as possible. The action is quick and could go either way when Reed lands a flying shoulder tackle and gets the win. This was a huge upset as Flair was the champion and I did not see this coming. ★★¾
  18. Dundee might be the best puncher ever. The way he throws his jabs looks stiff and I appreciate how he throws a toe kick or a headbutt in every so often to stop Lawler from catching on and defending himself. Lawler is a master of selling and gaining sympathy from the crowd. Lawler falling from the railing and nearly getting counted out kept me on the edge of my seat. This exactly what I want out of my southern brawling. ★★★★½
  19. Bryan definitely spent the first few years of his run adjusting to the WWE style. He might of missed a few years because of injury, but I still don't think it should disqualify him from the discussion. There's only a handful of wrestlers who have been both active every year of the last twenty and also been consistently good. Akiyama is the only one that comes to mind, actually.
  20. This felt very similar to their taped fists match from a few weeks before this, although that's not a bad thing. The stipulation might feel like a Vince Russo wet dream, but they make this work. As soon as I saw Duggan enter the cage in his white tuxedo, I knew he was going to bleed buckets. Dibiase is the king of stalling and giving just enough back to make you yearn for him to get a proper ass kicking. This doesn't quite live up to the hype for me, but it's worth seeing to show you that Jim Duggan isn't just a patriotic simpleton who walks around with a 2x4. ★★★★
  21. I watched this as I thought it would be essential viewing before I watch the famous cage match that they have a few weeks after this, but this was a great match in it's own right! Dibiase and Duggan are nothing like the WWF cartoon characters they would wrestle as in a few years time. They actually act like real people here, even if Dibiase is still a smug rich dude. This match only goes eight minutes, but they make every second count. Before the bell rings, Dibiase checks with the referee that there's no way to get disqualified and as soon as he gets clarification, he blinds Duggan with the dreaded white powder. Most of this match is a bloodied Duggan fighting from underneath, but he's sells Dibiase's punches so we'll that it's hard to fault this. The finish involves a ref bump, interference from Steve Williams and Dibiase breaking out a coal miner's glove to steal the win, which brilliantly leads into their next match. ★★★★
  22. This might just be one of my favourite brawls of all time. The crowd is red hot for this and both women have a posse leading them to the ring and watching them all get involved added greatly to the atmosphere. This is my first time seeing Nagayo and she comes across as such a natural babyface. The way she weaves some flashy counters into this hot as hell fight so effortlessly tells me that I need to seek out more of her work. Dump Matsumoto may not be as stiff as say Aja Kong, but she ups the violence by cutting open Nagayo with a chain and a pair of scissors. Even the poor referee ends up getting stabbed when he tries to break things up! The finish might come about too suddenly, but the post match head shaving was so emotional that it makes up for it. Dump dragging Nagayo to another side of the ring so she can force another group of crying fans to get a closer look was a total bitch move! ★★★★¾
  23. Yeah, it's Bryan. No question. Guys like Kobashi and Okada have had some elite level stuff in a smaller time frame, but no one has grown and been as much as a consistent worker than Bryan has been over the last 20 years. I'd say Cena deserves a shoutout too. His booking might rub some people the wrong way, but as a pure in-ring worker, he's one of the best of all time.
  24. Just a great big joshi movesfest with both women playing their respective roles to perfection. Aja can dish out a good beating and Toyota is great at selling said beating. I'm always impressed how Toyota launches herself to the top rope from an Irish whip and make it look so effortless. This isn't either women's best match, but I'd said it's a great way to get accustomed to the joshi style if you are not sure where to start. ★★★★
  25. Unlike most chain matches, this is won by pinfall, knockout or submission and not by touching the four corners of the ring like most matches involving a chain or strap. This was a total war, where they fight all over the place and they use the chain to up the violence. Nakano dropping a leg drop with one of her legs wrapped in the chain was probably the most brutal spot of the match. They go a little too long for my liking, as no brawl needs to go 20+ minutes, but this is still a must watch for anyone who likes a good bloody brawl. ★★★★¼
