Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 4
Sean Reedy replied to TravJ1979's topic in Pro Wrestling
Konnan has already talked about wanting to book Bryan in AAA which would be a much smoother transaction so we need Bryan's love of lucha to do some lifting. Or maybe he can work Casas in an indy. I've lost track of the state of lucha politics due to Covid. -

Folks a Bryan Danielson-Negro Casas Arena Mexico apuestas match is not impossible at this point. Bryan figures to work indies and international just as much as Mox and my brain can't comprehend him with that level of artistic freedom and having the star power to be able to do whatever he wants. -
Getting strong Jumbo-Kikuchi vibes.

Under-the-radar wrestling book recommendations

He's good! Enjoying life and attending his grandson's college football games during the fall. He's 78 and gave us 57 episodes and we ran through pretty much everything. I'm really proud that we got as much out of him as we did because otherwise it would have been lost to history. -
They're going to be plugging AEW on the WWE Network/Peacock directly after WrestleMania. Its much more surprising from the Vince side that he's open to it, guess it shows the current mentality.

SD this week was the top show of the night on broadcast TV in 18-34 and was a distant last in 50+ in the big 4 networks. Its a top 10 show in all of TV in 18-34 when you look at the rest of the week. RAW is battling evenly with the NBA for top show on cable in 18-34. http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-friday-cable-originals-network-finals-3-26-2021.html

I think this is probably going to end up being overblown. They've got ECW and Attitude Era stuff up untouched. If the line is blackface and the N-word then that's not going to have a huge impact on footage.

Boss Man/Akeem is still on the show?

Really feel like this is being made too difficult with the "Kenny built a bad bomb" stuff. ECW showed how to survive this in 93, they gained loyalty from their fans with the way they responded honestly. You open Dynamite with Tony saying that they didn't deliver up to their expectations and they're going to make it up to the fans, you open with a 20 minute Fenix-Jackson match with all the spots, and you move on. There's no way to kayfabe cover for Kingston's selling and everything else. Wrestling fans forgive, how many times have we seen it with WWE.
-
Just handle it like ECW and the Body Count match and move on.

Brandon Thurston on Twitter - Among males 13-24, WWE had more unique viewers (8.3M) in the U.S. on YouTube and Facebook than SportsCenter (6.3M) or ESPN (6.3M), from Feb-Dec 2020, according to Tubular Labs. Among U.S. males 25-44, SportsCenter (20.7M) and ESPN (18.2M) lead WWE (13.7M). https://twitter.com/BrandonThurston/status/1366066006268014594

In terms of general interest, interesting question that made me do some research. RAW destroys everything on cable in M12-34 except the NBA. SD was 2nd on Friday night in 18-34, losing slightly to Shark Tank. On Thursday its number was only below Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and again was close. Wednesday there was nothing higher. Tuesday just lost to This Is Us which I guess is huge with that audience. Monday it took a big trouncing from The Bachelor, The Neighborhood, and the 911 shows. Sunday it lost to American Idol, America's Funniest Home Videos, and 60 minutes. I dunno, maybe I'm looking at the numbers wrong, but isn't wrestling kind of insanely healthy when its near top 10 in that demo in overall network TV and destroys everything but the NBA on cable?

I think wrestling was just more interesting to be a hardcore fan of back in the 80s-90s due to technology and the general insanity of the business. Remembering my younger years, making my parents drive me an hour to a Japanese supermarket to pick up the latest AJPW/NJPW tapes and being so thrilled to watch them, sitting in an AOL chat room waiting for someone to get back from Prodigy to tell us what was happening in this crazy bingo hall in Philly, going through the work to complete a tape trade to see an Onita exploding barbed wire baseball match that seemed like the craziest thing in the world, going through the work to discover the Observer and reading this thing that felt like it shouldn't exist, this stuff took a lot of effort that lead to passion. And the behind the scenes was just more interesting when the business was crazier, its become much more corporate, which is good for everyone but not as interesting. WWE's two top stars, Bret and Shawn, getting into a legit fist fight backstage before RAW and everything from there leading to the Montreal screwjob, Pillman's whole thing in front of and behind the camera, Flair having the NWA world title on WWE TV, the steroid trial, Terry Funk almost burning down the ECW Arena, it was wild. Now being a hardcore fan is more choosing from what 9 hours of big time national American TV you want to watch, throw in about 20 hours of NJPW content a month that takes two clicks to watch, and comment on Reddit or Twitter. Look at the Observer awards. So I think we came from a time that encouraged more passion where now its a TV show to watch and talk about on the internet. I will say that AEW signing Paul Wight gave me a buzz that reminded me of the old days just because of how unexpected it was with Wight being a presumed WWE lifer, and AEW continuing to grow and genuinely challenge WWE will help drive more interest in the behind the scenes stuff that used to make wrestling so much fun.

I love Bobby but Jesse has become underrated. I did a rewatch of 87-89 Superstars and Jesse and Vince were such a key part of that formula working and keeping all the squashes interesting, specifically Jesse, because the show was never the same after he left. Something like a Duggan squash was guaranteed entertainment with Jesse on the mic. -

Bock was cited as a big influence on Jericho's suit-wearing big words-using heel character of 08-09. -
Downtown Bruno this week!

I really hope they continue doing TV with that fun sense of chaos instead of a lot of straight 10 minute wrestling matches, I think that's the model for drawing ratings. I loved this show.

What if I told you this entire journey into podcasting with Jerry Jarrett, Jerry Lawler, and Randy Hales was all part of an elaborate plan targeted towards getting to new Memphis footage. Lets keep that secret to this board! But I hope to produce new stuff for the community,.
-
Jimmy Hart this week! I'm living all of my Memphis fantasies!
-
Lawler and Dave Brown together this week! Fun stuff!

Hey all - I'm currently doing a podcast with Jerry Lawler on Podcast One, replacing his old one, and no we still don't have details on what happened to the old host. You can find us right here! I've enjoyed the shows and we've had some fun topics. In the show that we recorded today and is going up tomorrow, I went over my appreciation for the psychology of his matches and how every move meant something in his, and we had a really good discussion about that. Please let me know what you think and topics you would like to hear covered, sometimes I forget just all the possibilities that are available with his unique career. Thanks!

Tully getting the chance to properly heel in 2019 in front of this big of an audience makes the entire existence of AEW worthwhile.

Everyone should watch the last 20 minutes of NTR94, the entire locker room tries to improvise after Sabu breaks his neck, its amazing the promotion survived this. And the Body Count pyro thing and the fire incident.
-
Not technically in the Hidden Gems section but WWE just dropped November to Remember 94 which was never released, watching the show closing mess with Sabu breaking his neck a minute into the match with Benoit.
