Greatest WWF/E IC Championship Match of All Time?
goodhelmet replied to awesomemiz's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'll take this Tito-Valentine match over any of the matches listed so far. I think John is wrong about none of the matches standing alone as great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aurDOXZrpCU Great match, my favorite between the two so far. Stiff, violent and using the cage the way you should in an escape the cage rules match. I was telling Phil I love the way they just crumple to the ground with a leg dangling up in the air or half twisted when they land because it feels more real than he choreographed typical getting crotched on the rope or flat back bumps you see nowadays in nearly every cage match. Each time someone tried to escape the cage, it felt like the right way to stop the escape... Tito's palm strike to Greg's face, Tito holding on to Greg's tights for dear life, Greg punching the shit out of Tito. Add the blood (although there aren't any great camera angles of the blood), the awesome finish and Greg losing his shit in the post-match and this might be the best cage match the WWF produced in the 80s. EASIEST OF NOMINATIONS -
Well fuck, have any shows happened yet today? Does RAW have to be considered part of the old era or the new one that started today?

When does the era start?

1980s Lucha Wrestling Party #2
goodhelmet replied to goodhelmet's topic in Publications and Podcasts
1. MS-1 vs. Sangre Chicana (9/23/83) - One of the greatest wrestling experiences of my life. 2. Atlantis y El Hijo del Santo vs. Fuerza Guerrera y Lobo Rubio (11/25/83) - Kris kkept remarking how Santo was debuting and Atlantis was arookie. They looked world class this early in their careers. Rubio and Fuerza were awesome including the anstiest double team use of an apron ever. 3. Espectro Jr., Satanico y MS-1 vs. Mocho Cota, Sangre Chicana y La Fiera (9/30/83) - Fucking rudo vs. rudo street fight vibe. One week after the all time classic and you can lick the hate off your fingers. 4. Kevin von Erich, Mascara Ano 2000 y Halcon Ortiz v. Coloso Colosetti, Pirata Morgan y Herodes (9/23/83) - Weird uncooperative vibe with Kevin Von Erich with Kevin dropping sick elbows and the rudos responding by giving him receipts. 5. Sangre Chicana vs. Ringo Mendoza (10/28/83) - The end of the first two falls were cool as fuck. Sweet matwork but I don't know if ti will have the legs to stand up with the rest of the mat classics on the set. -

I was looking through the AWA stuff and noticed I was giving my rankings in these threads. Here are my Night one rankings.... Satoru Sayama y Gran Hamada vs. Perro Aguayo y Baby Face (4/13/80) - Really fun match with big spots from Hamada and Baby Face. Perro was nasty and Sayama did some cool shit as well. Centurion Negro vs. Gran Hamada (2/14/82) Tatsumi Fujinami vs. El Canek (6/12/83) - Real fun mat based matches with big dives to remember. Both the Hamada match and the Corleone match had the grat mud visuals to remember the matches by. Andre the Giant & Cien Caras vs. Alfonso Dantes, Herodes y Sangre Chicana (1981) - Watching it a second time did not feel as special as the first time but I still loved all of Andre's spots. I enjoyed everyone here better than I enjoyed Canek in the Corleone match so I ranked it higher even though I had the Corleone amtch higher on the show. El Canek vs. Don Corleone (2/14/82) - Corleone ruled, Canek sucked. -
OK, tonight I was joined by Kris Zellner, Phil Schneider and Johnny Sorrow. On the watch list... Kevin von Erich, Mascara Ano 2000 y Halcon Ortiz v. Coloso Colosetti, Pirata Morgan y Herodes (9/23/83) MS-1 vs. Sangre Chicana (9/23/83) Espectro Jr., Satanico y MS-1 vs. Mocho Cota, Sangre Chicana y La Fiera (9/30/83) Sangre Chicana vs. Ringo Mendoza (10/28/83) Atlantis y El Hijo del Santo vs. Fuerza Guerrera y Lobo Rubio (11/25/83) Awesome night of matches with guys continuously marking out throughout the entire process. Can't wait until some of you start joining in on the conversations! http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkC...6382&cmd=tc

What is the Flair-Kerry fever match. I have seen tons of Flair-Kerry. Never felt like Kerry was being carried in any of them. Is this just the famous locker room story told in shoot interviews?

Here are two match reviews for the current WWF process... Ken Patera vs. Pedro Morales (10/20/80) - Fucking Pedro was OVER! Pedro punching and choking Patera early on to huge cheers. Follows a similar pattern like earlier Patera matches where Ken gets the advantage and keeps Pedro on the outside after throwing him over the top rope. Patera is beating the shit out of Pedro. He slows it down with a front face lock and Pedro actually reverses it with a back body drop. Looked better than it sounds. Pedro’s comeback is so full of energy I can see why crowds went crazy for him even if he wasn’t a great wrester. You want to root for him. When Ken puts him in a bearhug, Pedro waves his finger letting the crowd know it isn’t over and milks it for all it is worth. Nice spot where Pedro falls on Patera while still in a bearhug and Ken almost gets pinned while holding onto the bearhug. Maybe the most entertaining bearhug sequence I have ever seen start to end. These two milked it for almost 4 minutes and I was perfectly fine with it. When Pedro finally breaks it, Ken is pissed and beats the shit out of Pedro. The ref gets in the way of these two battling and they end up getting disqualified. Maybe the best match I have ever seen Pedro morales in and Patera is having a helluva 1980. SOLID NOMINATION Buddy Rose vs. Pedro Morales (11/22/82) - Sheri Martel is not one of the ring girls here. Bummer. Buddy poses with e IC belt to get under Pedro’s skin. Buddy stalls by instructing the ref to make sure Pedro doesn’t have a closed fist and then does a Hail Mary in the corner. Awesome. When they finally connect, Pedro levels Buddy with a left hook. I mark out for Buddy so bad. Buddy stalls some more so Pedro kicks him in the ass. Love it. This is followed by Buddy trying to do a butt drop on Pedro’s leg but Buddy hits mat. So far, this is the kind of match Buddy fans will love but everyone else will hate. Buddy’s shtick is just the best. Buddy finally takes control and just steps on Pedro several times. He follows up with some nasty knee drops and a back body drop. Buddy also has the best backbreaker in the business. Buddy nails Pedro with every strike known to man… forearm, chop, punch, hammer blow. Pedro fights back with his high-octane offense (i.e. punches and slamming Buddy into the turnbuckle) Finish has Pedro missing a corner charge, Buddy trying to attack Pedro on the apron only to get caught on the sunset flip. Buddy throws a tantrum after the match. More Buddy Rose goodness here and I can’t be objective. SOLID NOMINATION. I may use a personal pick on this if I have to but I think most of you will enjoy this.

I was joined by Phil Schneider and Johnny Sorrow last night as we dig into the new DVDVR set. Here is the line-up for the show... Satoru Sayama y Gran Hamada vs. Perro Aguayo y Baby Face (4/13/80) Andre the Giant & Cien Caras vs. Alfonso Dantes, Herodes y Sangre Chicana (1981) Centurion Negro vs. Gran Hamada (2/14/82) El Canek vs. Don Corleone (2/14/82) Tatsumi Fujinami vs. El Canek (6/12/83) http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkC...6382&cmd=tc

Fuck, who has a better drop kick than Jim Brunzell?

Unless you are talking about an alternative podcast show on Bret, we already did the podcast... Will and Charles are joined by members of www.prowrestlingonly.com to discuss the career and legacy of Bret Hart. We take a brief look at his early days traveling the globe, wrestling in Stampede, forming the Hart Foundation, finding success as a singles wrestler and his most famous feuds. If you are a fan of the Hitman, you owe it yourself to listen to this show! http://placetobenation.com/wrestling-with-...ting-bret-hart/

I was thinking the same thing. I hated the brand split in theory but loved it in practice. I thought it was stupid to have two world champions. However, it has made me love many of the moments exclusive to SD!... Rey-Eddie, Punk and the SES, Henry's title run.

I agree with Dylan. There were some good matches but 1988 and 1989 as a whole felt lie a big letdown. People need to keep in mind that when matches are nominated, the usually are Not watched in chronological order and are nominated in relation to what didn't make the set. Matches that feel like easy nominations early in the process might not hold up next to the heavyweights that end up ranking high.

Cool heels. Also, I could not be happier we revisited Disc 1 as the last disc. I was underwhelmed with the disc as a whole the first run through. LOVED IT the 2nd time around and all matches got a boost.

The fact Bret and Yoko had awesome matches outside of Mania 9 and 10 makes it all the more sad that they couldn't have a classic at Mania. The Hogan factor at nine and Luger factor at ten ruined what could have been another classic matchup between the two.

http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkC...6382&cmd=tc Final show for AWA. Some time this week, we'll do the first lucha viewing party. The final matches to be ranked are as follows... Nick Bockwinkel vs. Jim Brunzell (6/11/81) Adrian Adonis vs. Jim Brunzell (6/28/81) Jerry Blackwell vs. Billy Robinson (12/3/81) Nick Bockwinkel vs. Billy Robinson (12/25/81) Hulk Hogan, Buck Zumhoffe & Baron Von Raschke vs. Bobby Heenan, Ken Patera & Bobby Duncum (2/28/82) Nick Bockwinkel vs. Hulk Hogan (4/18/82) Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie vs. High Flyers (Cage Match) (4/18/82) Tito Santana & Rick Martel vs. High Flyers (8/29/82) We were all in consensus that all of the matches were well worth watching. Nobody had the 8 matches ranked in the same order. Hell, in some cases, not even close. Still what a fun way to end the set because this disc smoked those 1989 matches.

Who were you talking to?

What did last years show do?

My current favorite five... About two dozen luchadores so I am focusing on people I am digging right now outside the lucha set... 1. Goldust - loved his stuff in the Orton match. Need to really finish part 2 of the Dustin set. 2. William Regal - once I finish a wrestler set, I usually don't go back and watch the matches for fun. Been loving Regal and only looking for more of his run with the tv title. 3. The Shield - 11 on 3? Fuck it, they were still awesome. Really liked the PTP mini feud. 4. Greg Valentine - really hoping a bunch of early Crockett pops up out of a garbage can so I can see some early Hammer. 5. Carlos Colon- get ready people, Colon will be the next obviously Great wrestler you don't thik twice about calling great.
-
Too bad they aren't serious about the brand split anymore. A guy like Titus could probably end up in a better spot over there.
-
I tried watching it a few months ago... Brutal. However, when I was teaching summer school, I burned through the entire 1st season of Welcome Back Kotter in a. Few days. WBK rules.
