  1. We did a Lucha Party show last night where Kris Zellner makes the exact same point. I also asked Kris what his qualifications were in being a Hall of Fame voter. He said it had something to do with latex gloves and ferrets.
  2. Yeah, Honky was already a Ferris creation but I don't know of any foootage of him using the gimmick prior to his WWF debut. Hercules was Hercules in Mid South, long before he hit the WWF. Koko Ware and George Steele weren't really that different from their pre-Rock N Wrestling personas.
  3. Mr. Electricity Steve Regal.... not even close. This is representative of the guy's entire career and his effect on the audience.
  4. I like it. Good to have a piss break after the Steiners match and before the main event.
  5. I don't think anyone is breaking their backs. Like you said, it makes good internet viewing. If I was really that upset or bent out of shape over Meltzer's Hall of Fame, I would make my own with the first inductees being William Regal, Dick Murdoch, Buddy Rose, Bill Dundee and El Dandy. Shit... works for me.
  6. Stop. It's as if you aren't even reading what i'm typing, so I think it's time to bow out again. You said it as dumb and makes no sense to compare working styles from different time periods. I read your post this morning. Responded this afternoon. For the record, you did not say it we retarded, you said it was dumb. My mistake. Having said that, the approach is something we have been doing on this board for years. Comparing the working strengths and weaknesses of wrestlers from different time periods to see who we think was better. You may think it is dumb. I think it makes the board and the discussion a better place for it.
  7. With all due respect, the reason Rose, Dandy, Dundee etc. have a better reputation here than at large is because we have people who actually watched large amounts of footage of these guys at their peak in the settings n which they would be considered Hall of Fame caliber workers. We have also watched large amounts of Brody, Inoki, Muraco. It's watching large amounts of footage that allows us to form these opinions and compare those wrestlers with other wrestlers from different time periods. You call it retarded. I think if you are doing a Hall of Fame that guys from today be held to the same criteria as workers, draws, etc. from other time periods. You make direct comparisons. Instead you flippantly reject this approach as retarded. If that is living In a Bubble because we actually EXPANDED our wrestling viewing then I am happy to be in that bubble that continuously examines different wrestlers to an insane degree including wrestlers you like. This bubble also has a pretty wide range of diverse opinions.
  8. Awesome reference. Goodnight WCW.
  9. Fucking shit Jimmy.. stealing thunder again.
  10. If you make the claim he has the best matches in the world right now, why are you reluctant to back that claim up with a couple of reasons they are the best matches going? What does he do better in those matches that Rose, Murdoch, Morton, etc. do in their best matches? You can list stuff and it will matter because this isn't the Observer board. You can have disagreements, argue with people, and people will actually pay attention to what you say without generating a flame war (for the most part). If you make blanket statements and then refuse to list the stuff that backs up those statements, why make the statements at all? Fuck, start a Tanahashi appreciation thread and generate the love. It started in the Cena vs. Tanahashi thread but petered out. Hell, do a Gordy list on Tanahashi and refute the claims made by jdw and others. You are right that he probably will get in the Hall of Fame someday if not this year. It doesn't actually validate your opinion he is great and worthy but it can also just reinforce the notion that the Hall of Fame rules themselves are flawed as jdw and others have pointed out in this thread. Also, at this point, I may change my name (or yours) to Niche Fetishism. Contact me for your Niche Fetishism comps.
  11. Fucking Phil stealing my thunder!!!!
  12. I don't give a shit if he is getting in. I am more interested in the question posed above... what does Tanahashi do better than those guys? Once your historical draw argument is debunked, you are left with work. Also, hate to break it to you bro but once you become a wrestling fan who obsesses over great matches, reads news letters, seeks footage out from around the world and writes about it on a message board... it is all niche fetishism.
  13. "What does Tanahashi do better than us in the ring?"

  15. Thanks for the subtle shout out shoe even though Von Kramer no sold it. Having said that, as someone who has seen the best all three have had to offer in the 1980s, I went with Steamboat. I think the exception may be Martel in Montreal if that even happened in the 1980s. I am sure purpotsy could set the record straight. Martel - Had the great AWA tag matches and really good title run. In the WWF, he suffered from WWF 80s disease as guys who lost some mojo when they went to New York after a high end run. I like his tag with Tito as Strike Force and the heel turn but I don't know if any of the matches I have seen are super high end enough to trump the classic Steamboat tag feuds from early in the decade. Tito - I was tempted to vote for Tito for the Valentine feud alone. One of the best feuds from any decade. As much as I love the feud, Steamboat has more high end feuds. His AWA tag stuff is super high end but not that much exists on tape. Again, after the Valentine feud, I am having trouble finding much high end Tito. You can probably name a match or two but an entire series? Steamboat - Early on, he has the Youngblood tag team with the Kernodle-Slaughter and Briscoes feuds. Mix in some solid high-end matches against Flair and Tully in this time and he is closing in on Tito early on. Moving to WWF, the Muraco feud was a dud but the Jake feud was classic with at least one great match. He moves into the Savage feud which produced at least 2 or 3 great matches. He disappears for most of 1988 and has a super high end 1989 with Flair, Luger, etc. In terms of volume, I don't think it is even close. As far as doing the things that babyfaces do, they were all pretty great babyfaces. The thing that bothers me about Steamboat is his comical over-selling but Steamboat always defended it as playing to the cheap seats which doesn't really translate well on TV. It can hurt his matches on tape but at least I get the reasoning. In interviews, Steamboat is by far the worst interview of the bunch but none of the guys are ever mentioned in best interviews of all time discussions. I know we had a great AWA bloody Martel interview but I don't think he did anything else memorable on the mic until the heel turn. At this point, I am going purely on volume of high-end matches, and at least on tape, Steamboat wins by a mile.
  16. Maybe he will end up in the cockroach that is TNA and turn the company around like Angle did.

Fuck, I could watch this six man combo every night of the week. I like the Goldust FIP better than a Cena FIP but great stretch run and another super fun match. The legend of Goldust and Cesaro continues.

  19. -Work alone isn't getting Tanahashi in, -But it certainly could. I know this is going to open a gigantic can of worms, and I realize there is probably no good reason to do this because i'm clearly on the wrong side of the proverbial tracks, but sometimes on this site there is a severe lack of self awareness of the niche fetishism for people like Rose, Dundee, etc. If you asked me if i'd rather watch my house burn down or watch a typical Dundee southern style punch fest, i'd think hard before settling in for the match. Memphis is about as appealing to me as GLOW or lightning tube death matches (hint: I don't like those things), so i'll chalk that up to style. But Rose I like, he's fine as a small territory heel, actually very good in fact, but don't pretend as if Rose as some slam dunk awesome top ten worker is a universal opinion. It isn't. Tanahashi is churning out non stop ****+ star stuff at a pace that hasn't been matched since Misawa/Kobashi. This run is legendary, and he wasn't chopped liver before it started. He's on a completely different level than somebody like Bill Dundee or Regal, and I love Regal. But Tanahashi's worst singles match this year rival's Regal's best stuff ever. Anyway, this is all subjective. I feel like Dylan does when he wanders over to "my" side of the tracks. My post probably reads as a troll, but that's not the intent. I just don't think the work of people like Dundee or Rose is what your typical HOF voter looks at as HOF level great. Tanahashi's stuff is. I agree. You are on the wrong side of the tracks.
  20. If it was, it wasn't my fault... honest
  21. What he said. It will be locked and pinned. I don't want it bumped a year or two or three from now. Create a new thread. I am preserving this one.
  22. I think I am going to give this another day of replies and then lock it and pin it. Just like WCW, this project needs to be laid to rest and Jerome deserves props for seeing it through.
  23. That's nuts, I have neevr seen that screen before. Almost a throwback to the old DVDVR or TOA boards.
  24. I would hate the company the minute an announcer was forced to say that "Today is the greatest PPV I've ever known"
