Good Will Wrestling: The Legend of Dick Murdoch
KrisZ replied to soup23's topic in Publications and Podcasts
After the Funks became part of the regular army, Murdoch took over as the lead gaijin for a while in 1979-80 setting the table for Brody basically and held the United National Title. Him going to NJPW was the tablesetter for AJPW getting Hansen because AJPW needed someone to fill his slot.- 201 replies

Good Will Wrestling: The Legend of Dick Murdoch

Ivan was a guy that would homestead as well in a lot of territories where Murdoch would bounce around here and there. Murdoch's calling cards were of course St. Louis, Florida when it was very hot in 1970-71, McGuirk & Mid-South where he was the top star pre-JYD then became like Bruno to JYD's Backlund, and of course his runs as top gaijin in AJPW & NJPW at different times. Like I said I'm not arguing against Ivan as he should be in the HOF just like Murdoch.- 201 replies

Murdoch was a bigger star than Ivan if you catch my drift. Ivan was a great steady heel performer who you could plug in and face any of the top faces while Murdoch drew money as a face and as a heel which to me is always a major plus in your corner. Ivan's plus over Murdoch is that he had multiple WWWF runs facing Bruno, Pedro, & Backlund in front of huge houses but you could make the argument whether was it Ivan or he was random heel opponent vs. WWWF champion. In my mind regardless both men are HOFers so it doesn't really matter to me.- 201 replies

He was arguably the biggest national star from 1979-84 because of the TBS penetration. Huge draw in Georgia and was used as a special attraction in many markets such as Oakland, Houston, New Orleans, Tampa/St. Pete, even did a MSG shot although in midcard. He had very successful runs in Memphis in numerous incarnations. There were ripoff gimmicks of him which shows his influence on other promoters. He is definitely worth a look.

Sent mine in this morning and this was the toughest one yet since I have been doing this. I FOLLOWED THE HISTORICAL PERFORMERS ERA CANDIDATES Johnny "Mr. Wrestling II" Walker I FOLLOWED THE MODERN PERFORMERS ERA CANDIDATES Junkyard Dog Ivan Koloff Dick Murdoch Ken Patera Rock & Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN JAPAN CANDIDATES I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN MEXICO CANDIDATES Blue Panther Cien Caras Villano III I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN EUROPE CANDIDATES I FOLLOWED WRESTLING IN AUSTRALIA/PACIFIC ISLANDS/CARIBBEAN/AFRICA CANDIDATES Carlos Colon NON-WRESTLERS Bill Apter Gary Hart Jimmy Hart Jerry Jarrett Stanley Weston Brazos & Misionarios are the ones that were the toughest for me to leave off and yeah while the Misionarios get all the love for being a key cog in making trios matches hot in Mexico, the Brazos were more high profile and did better business.

When doing the Lucha section we saw old ass Blue Demon work and he was pretty damn good then so yeah I can imagine how great he must've been 20 years earlier

Santo the son was way more flashier than Santo the father plus it comes down to new vs. old in a lot of ways. Old lucha from the 50's was way different than lucha in 90's. We don't have a good enough sample size of Santo the father to compare in my mind but the opinion of Santo the son being better in the ring than Santo the father isn't just his as I've seen other historians say the same.

In essence it gives people an excuse to vote for Brock when they want him in for other reasons.
-
Lesnar beating Undertaker will surely mean way too much more than it should to a lot of voters then you add in Cena and of course his legitimacy and I think it's going to be a no brainer.
-
Lesnar's year this year put him in more than anything I think and I think like I said on Twitter he is the favorite to win Wrestler of the Year

When the IWE guys (Inoue, Tsurumi, Hara, Rusher, etc) came in it started changing then Tiger Jeet Singh came over along with Sheik's success.

One of the criteria for the HOF is positive influence will she had about as big of a negative influence as anyone...she basically made her troupe slaves and she got all their money.

People ask Dave to put guys on the ballot..that's how some get on there.

I think this is an important point and it speaks to something I wanted to write a bit about in response to the latest kerfuffle (really wanted to use that word). Though I have seen other criticisms, generally there is one major criticism I see levied against PWO. The criticism usually boils down to this "I am intimidated and/or feel that it may be intimidating for others to post certain viewpoints on PWO because generally speaking PWO has a line on Wrestler X, and my view runs counter to that line." I have a few problems with this. The first problem is that for the most part I don't think this is true. Yes there are certain wrestlers who are thought of very favorably here who might not be and/or aren't talked about much elsewhere (El Dandy, Buddy Rose, et). Yes there are guys who are thought of less favorably here than they are may be elsewhere (Brody, Sayama, et.). But these are still general statements. More to the point the people that praise and/or attack these wrestlers are usually do so only after watching a ton of their work - more often than not in context with other workers from the relevant promotions and time periods - and are providing detailed reasons for what they do or don't like about the wrestlers. Can you find dismissive posts like Will saying AJ Styles wouldn't make his top 750? Yes, but I also immediately called him on that, and lots of times even dismissive comments like that lead to tons of solid discussion/debate (see my HHH thread for example or the "would Shawn Michaels make your top 100?" thread). The second problem I have with this criticism is that the people who make it are often incredibly dismissive themselves. Whether it be someone coming into a thread and saying "Brody was great here, it's not my fault if you can't see it," or someone claiming that there are dozens of matches from 2014 better than any match form anywhere on Earth in 1987 and the primary reason for that is athleticism, or whatever else, I see plenty of statements that run counter to alleged PWO orthodoxies that are just as dismissive and/or grandiose in their claims, as anything someone like Will or I might say about someone like Hiroshi Tanahashi. What's notable is that I have NO PROBLEM with this line of argument, but I can't take seriously the claims of dismissive elitism being a negative for the board when they are made by dismissive elitists. One final problem I'll mention now, is that I think the call for more open mindedness or whatever is being advocated for, would really ruin the board. What is good about this board is that people do discuss and debate things. The idea of PWO becoming a place where people feel the need to preface every statement with "In my opinion" or "well it's good for that style!" or whatever, would turn this place into another uninteresting, boring place to talk about wrestling. I am all for Tanahashi fans, Devitt fans, Gargano fans, et. coming in and giving their thoughts on things and engaging in debate. I am not in favor of them enjoying a privileged status on the grounds that their feelings may be hurt if I say mean things about their favorite wrestler (side note, one of the posts I found the most insulting and narrow minded in the history of this forum, was one made by someone cited in this debate as a model of fandom. Point being - a lot of this is in the eye of the beholder). If people feel indie guys are underrepresented in the GWE forum, nominate some indie guys and make the case. If people feel modern NJPW is unfairly maligned here, make a thread and review the matches/shows (OJ has been giving favorably reviews to Tanahashi matches for months in The Microscope for example). If people think lucha is stylistically flawed or overrated, lets talk about it. Everyone does not have to agree or even be deferential to every point of view, even they should be deferential to every poster. There is a difference. All of this x100...... Plus the name of this place is Pro Wrestling Only so like Bill Parcells once said "You Are What You Are"

MSG shows always drew good ratings for HBO & MSG Network when they aired. Strongbow was pretty shitty in that gimmick but supposedly when he worked under his real name Joe Scarpa when he was younger he was pretty good
