5 is a hell of a placement for Bryan but once we got into the top 10 I started rooting for him to go as far as possible. I'd have loved to see him in the top 3. He was my #2.

After dropping Giant on his head with the powerbomb Nash almost does the same thing on a powerbomb to the outside.

The opening stuff before they settled into tag rules was a lot of fun. Austin comes out to a huge pop and they keep the heat up with a nice babyface assault featuring Austin kicking all kinds of ass. Gunn selling for Austin is really good, even later on when Austin throws a trashcan at him across the ring and Gunn takes a big pump off it. The match was already sort of losing steam by the time they settled into the tag rules and after that it just started wearing out its welcome.

Austin is such a badass here. Shame Michaels couldn't work the 8 man tag because this does a great job building anticipation to see these guys clash. The continued inter-linking build of all these four matches toward Wrestlemania helps a lot. Makes the tag match and Owen/Triple H feel like bigger deals than they would otherwise and makes the weekly TV a lot better than it probably would be otherwise.

Really great package. Cole's voice-over with his more mainstream media background gives this a feeling of legitimacy. The three way jabber between Austin, Tyson and Michaels is all really good. Tyson calls Austin an "uncouth imbecile" and implores him to try love instead of hate. This feels like we're going into one of the biggest matches ever.

Pretty hilarious. Rock has tons of charisma and these promos before he really went into full catchphrase mode are great.

Yep, great homestretch and I'd like to see all of this. Otani's selling after the first brainbuster is so hilariously great. Also loved how he sort of reversed the second brainbuster from the top and just landed on top of Liger -- actually, it looked more like it wasn't any intention of his and Liger just didn't execute it right and Otani happened to fall on top of him rather than head first into the ring, which he played up with his reaction, looking so excited that he lucked into surviving the move.

Will update at the end of each month, not looking for a particular top 50 or 100 or anything, just adding matches I thought were of particular MOTYC quality. Through January: Kiyoshi Tamura vs Mikhail Ilioukhine (RINGS 01/21/98) Etsuko Mita & Mima Shimoda vs Meiko Satomura & Sonoko Kato (GAEA 01/15/98) Sandman vs Sabu (ECW House Party 01/10/98) Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama (AJPW 01/26/98) Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka (BattlARTS 01/20/98) 1998's January certainly had nothing on 1999's January.

[1998-02-03-BJW-Indy Hyper J Tournament] Yoshihiro Taijiri vs Gedo
tim replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Tajiri starts off with a hot run of offense before Gedo trips him up on an asai moonsault attempt and goes after the arm. Even during Tajiri's big run of offense during his comeback he keeps selling the arm really well which makes it more meaningful when Gedo goes back to it. Some added intensity here with a bit of crowd brawling and chair shots to Tajiri's arm. Really good homestretch especially the last couple moments where they exchange quick roll-up attempts leading to Tajiri blocking a low-blow and hitting one of his own to set up the dragon suplex in a great ending. I liked this match a lot.- 8 replies

[1998-02-03-BJW-Indy Hyper J Tournament] Yoshihiro Taijiri vs Minoru Tanaka
tim replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
This felt to me like an NJ juniors version of a really good B-show match. Short, all action with a lot of unique stuff. Some consistent trends in the match like Tanaka always going for the armbar and Tajiri always looking for the dragon suplex added some nice cohesion to the match. Tajiri trying to turn that tilt-a-whirl back submission into a dragon suplex was a great spot. Tajiri finally hits the dragon suplex for the win. Very good short match.- 5 replies

Fun match before the angle and man, what an angle. Really, really impressive stuff. The way they shot this and how they directed the aftermath is seriously great TV. Feels like a huge deal, they get everything right with the Outlaw's reactions, the roster coming out, the chaos around the ramp area, wrestlers going after the Outlaws. The camera work/production and announcer reaction all strike the perfect chord too. The talk about "getting over" and the Outlaws doing it for the ratings was a perfect injection of some realism without going over too far. The time dedicated to this also helps and makes it feel like a huge deal.
-
Cactus and Funk are coming back too quick especially given how great a job they did selling the angle as a big deal. Would have been more effective to just end the show with Michaels taunting Austin in the ropes which was a great visual. Austin cleaning house before DX comes down was also great and the crowd was going nuts. Lots of good stuff this RAW.
-
Owens is coming in hot after the dumpster incident. Great opening stretch of Owen taking it to Gunn and dispatching Road Dogg too. Good stuff to establish the association between the Outlaws and DX and the programs being mixed together like this makes them all feel bigger and gives the show a greater feeling of purpose.

I thought it was pretty great and significantly better than any of the Jericho matches.

Taking the "snapshot" approach to this list, Taker making it vs. not making it in 2006 makes sense. Over the last 10 years his estimation among hardcore fans has increased a ton. The starting point for that, funny enough, is probably the 2006 match vs. Angle.

Virus is the master of what I think of as juniors style lucha, which has at this point totally taken over. No one comes close to working that version of lucha as well as Virus. And he can work the mat with the best of the old masters too. Had him at 35. If he had more title matches on tape I can't imagine him not being a top 20 candidate.
-
Good to see Ikeda on the list, had him at 18. Would be nice to see Ishikawa in the top 50.

Zayn is a surprise to me. I wouldn't expect him to outrank other second-tier indie guys (first tier being Bryan, Joe, Punk) like Steen, Low-Ki, Aries, etc. But this poll got a pretty big sample size and early 2010s ROH was something that I was totally out of wrestling during, so maybe people who followed that have a stronger attachment to him for that than I'd guess.

[1998-01-26-WWF-Raw] Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie vs New Age Outlaws
tim replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Wrestlemania 14 really had an exceptional build for all its major matches from a long way out. This was a good segment. -
[1998-01-26-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
tim replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Akiyama was really good here. Staying in control in the beginning, lots of counters, always on top of what Misawa was going, pulling out a lot of big offense, really felt like a guy prepared to put up the fight of his life for the title. Misawa was still clearly the stronger guy here, Akiyama had much more offense during the match but even after strings of huge moves from Akiyama Misawa could make a comeback with relative ease and do a lot more damage with a couple moves than Akiyama had done with a lot. Plenty of good stuff here, I especially liked Misawa rolling through an exploder and following up with a rolling elbow. Not an AJPW classic but really good.- 12 replies

Nasty spear. Goldberg was the man. You can only really do a Goldberg style push with someone once, and they sure picked the right guy for it.

This is sort of a textbook good match of the Ric Flair style, without the length. In being textbook there was nothing, for most of the match, particularly unique or exciting, but the whole way through it was two competent wrestlers working an entertaining and satisfying match, fitting for the style of program they ran. The ending moments could have been a little more contentious though, instead Bret just strings together a long run of offense before locking on the Sharpshooter.

Really fun match and a great way to open a PPV. Lizmark Jr. and Silver King sure did lay it in on their exchanges. The match falters just a little toward the end as there's a run of some miscommunication and spots that don't quite hit with the crowd, but it's quickly followed up by a hell of a dive train. Post-match with La Park is a blast.
