[1999-10-17-WWF-No Mercy] Jeff Jarrett vs Chyna (Good Housekeeping)
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
Hey, this was a lot of fun! Lots of bells and whistles, no down time, simple but effective match structure: Chyna takes it to Jarret in the beginning with weapons shots, goes through a table to put Jarrett in control and an effective re-start finish with a good, decisive ending. In fact, this might actually be one of the best WWF matches of the year. Even top 10? Maybe. -
[1999-10-17-WWF-No Mercy] Edge & Christian vs Matt & Jeff Hardy (Ladder)
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
I guess this is one of the most influential WWE matches ever, inaugurating their real love affair with stunt show gimmick matches. They really won the crowd over with this when neither team seemed very over when it started. Funny to see something that ends up being so important in retrospect built around Terri. And boy Lawler wouldn't shut up about it. Fun match with cool spots we've seen many times since but were very innovative then.- 14 replies

Virus and Terry will be high on my list, along with the usual suspects. Atlantis will be on. Super Astro will probably find a place, probably La Fiera too.

Really awesome match that really gets going into the home stretch. There's definitely a strong juniors influence here that makes it unique. They may just have went overboard with leg submission after leg submission but each one was set up really well so it's hard to complain. The last minute or two are really great with a nice tease a payoff to the Taka driver and a camel clutch of all things finishing it. Lacks the brutality and attention to detail a lot of BattlARTS matches have but more than makes up for it with the unique juniors influence. Tanaka's having a good month! And despite not having the great grappling to the level of a lot of BattlARTS classics, Tanaka does pull off a really cool head and arm choke.

Why have they always made Big Show cry so much? The idea of Show coming to the realization that he's been coasting on his physical ability and not really putting his all into wrestling and turning that around to give him a major main event push is good in theory.

More stuff that is known to exist and are classics but aren't online anywhere.

[1999-10-11-NJPW-Final Dome] Shinya Hashimoto vs Naoya Ogawa
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
This match wasn't a good decision but it was pretty great before the prolonged beating of Hashimoto. Crowd is really into it and the heat in nuclear when Hash gets offense. An especially great moment is Hash making a comeback with a headbutt as Ogawa is distracted shoving the ref. Ogawa's STOs look really good. This was going into MOTYC territory until the end.- 12 replies

This is one of my favorite things in wrestling: hateful junior style tag with lots of rule bending. I guess there's not a lot of examples of it but we have this, the Wagner match from March and the Liger/Kikuchi series and I love love love this style of match every time I see it. This match is really back a forth and no one gets the advantage for any extended period of time except until the end when a series of huge moves puts Kanemoto away. A great finish with great post match reactions from Ohtani and Takaiwa. So much great stuff in this match. Otani and Kanemoto are obviously the stand outs but everyone's good here. One of my top matches of the year. Otani and Kanemoto even did a mirror drop kick spot in the beginning that was good!

What are the best matches that still aren't up anywhere online -- whether through popular sites like youtube, downloadable torrents or subscription services?

This was one match I was never able to get into. Everything was well done and there was some cool stuff but this was bland overall. I feel like in a different setting with a different goal for the match they could have done something a lot better than a by the numbers technical exhibition. But as a tribute, it was fitting.

[1999-09-27-WCW-Nitro] Billy Kidman vs Psicosis (Hair vs Mask)

Rey and Psicosis lose their masks in the same year. Not a great decision. Fun home stretch with a nice ending for Kidman's win.- 6 replies

I actually thought the Okada/Tanahashi match was a classic. I'll need to rewatch it but I was blown away by it watching live.

Guido, Tajiri and Crazy this year have had a couple matches that are really, really unique and so fun. They all strike a really cool balance between technical wrestling, high spots and ECW rule breaking. This is up there with them as a super fun match. That full-nelson roll up thing Guido did was out of this world.

Hilarious segment. For the short time they were doing this act Mankind and the Rock had really incredible chemistry.

Really good match. Sting is pretty clearly presented as the better guy. And he sure does hit some nice elbow drops.

[1999-09-19-ECW-Anarchy Rulz] Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka vs Taz
tim replied to Loss's topic in September 1999
Taz really gets it from the crowd and Styles mentions that word has gotten out among "internet fans." Pretty good way to send off the top guy and introduce a new one. Awesome/Tanaka was a fun spot fest but talk about over the top.- 6 replies

I really loved this match. Casas and Santo as a technico team continues to be really cool. Lots of high end offense for a lucha match and it's all really good, especially the great looking Doomsday crossbody Casas and Santo hit in the second fall. One thing especially impressive in this match is the twists and turns in momentum, they really manage some pretty involved back-and-forth spots to establish who's in control. Commentary on this match is a lot of fun too from what I picked up -- they argue over whether or not Wagner's Michinoku Driver was a Martinete -- and then when Casas wins the final fall with the brainbuster they fight over whether THAT was a Martinete too! One commentator maintains it is while the other defends it being a suplex.

Triple H's promo is kind of lame and the crowd really isn't as hot for most of this as you might expect for a major angle at the time. They do pop big for Shane taking down Trips and Austin coming out gets them going. It's surprising Vince winning the title only happened this one time (other than the ECW reign). Interesting moment that feels like it should be bigger.

Great match though I don't really see it as a top-tier MOTYC. I like how they worked it with Satomura's hyper-active and scrappy offense vs. Aja more deliberate firepower that was a level above what Satomura was capable of. Aja is firmly in control for almost the whole match -- Satomura gets offense in sometimes, sometimes it even has an effect, but this is Aja's match almost all the way through though Satomura is always in the fight. When Satomura finally strings together a real attack further into the match it feels like a real big moment. Satomura attacking the arm was great -- I actually think I would have liked the match more if Aja had submitted when Satomura caught her in the armbar when he was coming off the top with an elbow because that ending after the match they had worked up to that point would have been really perfect. Aja not being able to lock in a choke after the arm work was really great. I feel like I've seen some Aja matches that came after this that I liked more but this was really good, it just never hit that next level for me to rank it among the very best of a surprisingly strong year.

The long walks through the crowd were a bit much but I liked this match a lot. Like the couple of Honma death matches that are a cut above the rest of the death matches I've seen this one has the benefit of being worked like a good bomb throwing brawl with the weapons added in for extra emphasis rather than dominating the match as props -- plus the big spots look great but are rather big moves that would hurt like hell rather than insane spots that no mortal man should be continuing after. Good stuff here over all, very fun match that went by fast. I especially liked how they set up the powerbomb onto the nails spot -- Honma and Yamakawa are battling on the apron and Honma falls off the apron into position to lift Yamakawa into a powerbomb. Honam's running forearms also looked great throughout. At one point Honma places one of the barbed wire boards wire-down on Yamakawa and then goes up to the top rope as if to hit a move onto the board and Yamakawa just says "uh, fuck this" and moves the board off him.
