  1. It seems like Tully was burning bridges everywhere around this time - the Observer goes into detail about how he was brought into ECW to be an opponent for Shane Douglas and work a long program, but they wound up cutting it short when Tully didn't want to do any jobs for Shane.
  2. I have to admit, the idea of a babyface Robert Fuller managing Hulk Hogan in WCW is so strange, it would have had to have been awesome had it happened.
  3. I think I was the one kid who never liked the Ultimate Warrior. I was a big Hogan fan as a kid and always thought Hogan was better, and in my weird 10 year old brain, I couldn't like both guys since they were basically 1 and 1A on top of the food chain, so I went with Hogan.
  4. That lasted what, one TV taping?
  5. As for Tony Anthony, the reason he didn't go to USWA is because he wound up in WWF and was there until after the USWA died (USWA died summer '97, DWB was in the WWF until the end of '97). And after that, frankly the guy was pretty old and he semi-retired at that point. It's kind of a shame, in another world I think DWB goes to ECW and has a fun run against Tommy Dreamer instead of Brian Lee.
  6. Buddy broke his ankle soon after he started with WWF, and then never really went back after he healed up. I think he worked southern indies after that, and the persistent rumor in 1997 and 1998 was that he was going to start with WCW as the nWo Nature Boy, but that obviously never happened, and was probably never a real idea to begin with.
  7. This was Dutch's swan song from SMW as he took a job booking in Puerto Rico, so this led absolutely nowhere. I think it was designed to be his swan song, but I watched it 2-3 times and I still haven't figured out what Dutch was going for here. And with that, the best broadcast team in the US is split up.
  8. I can say that among my circle of friends when I was 10-11 years old, Demolition was probably the #3 babyface act of the time behind Hogan and Warrior. We were all WWF fans who didn't watch WCW (yet - I started watching WCW about a year later) so it makes sense. That said, once the LOD came in, they kinda made the Demos irrelevent. Also, for whatever it's worth, I don't really see Demolition as Road Warriors ripoffs. I'd say that about the Powers of Pain for sure, they were clearly modeled after the Roadies. Demolition always looked to me to be more of a KISS ripoff than a Road Warriors ripoff.
  9. Somebody needs to do a photoshop of Dana White superkicking Dave Meltzer on the set of the Barber Shop.
  10. Her name was Beulah and she was legendary among SMW circles.
  11. I think the opposite will happen, he grows on you after a while. There is a sense of earnestness that I really appreciate about Bob Caudle. I think he and Dutch work really well together.
  12. The first two weeks or so of SMW TV are completely different from what the rest of the shows will look like. The taping aired in February of 1992 but had been taped in October '91, so the Koloffs are gone pretty quickly and Dutch starts taking less of an in-ring role. The basics are there (Ron Wright, Jim Cornette, Brian Lee, Robert Gibson, and the Fantastics were the top heels and faces in SMW until the summertime) but other guys were just used for a taping or two and never used again.
  13. I don't think they missed the boat with Scorp, so much as Scorp kind of buried his own career by getting into trouble while he was there. I think he had an issue with police during Wrestlemania 13 weekend and never recovered from that. Not saying he would have been WWF Champion or anything, but he probably would have enjoyed a much better career had that not happened.

    Brock is back

I stand by my words from last month. I know he's not everybody's favorite, but...he's probably my favorite carny scumbag walking the face of the Earth, so I'm glad he will be appearing on my TV again somewhat frequently.
  15. I already can't wait for the 1990 Yearbook - I decided a while ago that was going to be my first, and I was going to go through the 90's chronologically, so I can't wait to check this out!
  16. See, I think there's a difference. Van Horne is making reference to porn stars and felching in the Bible Belt, which is supposed to be edgy, but in reality most of the crowd probably has little to no idea who he's talking about. Cornette could be clever, but he would do what he said to get heat, whereas I see what Mitchell is doing to be more about popping the boys, since the target SMW crowd isn't going to get his references. I see that as a key difference. And while the Prince Kharis gimmick was DOA and probably had no hope out of the gate (because the gimmick stunk and the guy doing the gimmick wasn't any good), I don't think Van Horne did much to elevate it, either.
  17. Agreed. This is tremendous. Cornette is near tears as he's conceding defeat to the Rock 'n' Rolls. And for the most part (save a few indy shots here and there in the 2000's) this really is the end of Jim Cornette vs the Rock 'n' Roll. Pretty sad, actually.
  18. I never really liked Daryl Van Horne. He seemed to be trying way too hard, particularly with all the references to porn stars and such. 90% of his content seemed to be designed to pop the boys, and that rubbed me the wrong way.
  19. In other words...they're going to be just another one of the 47 different indy promotions that are running Philadelphia that don't draw.
  20. Sorry, but the opposite is true. He brings up other sports to argue against those who say there aren't problems in wrestling. He's mentioned the 1994 Chargers in the past as an example of the dangers of steroid use. There were 38 people scheduled to appear on the Wrestlemania card, including the four guys in the dark opener and the ten man tag that was crapped. There's 53 players on a football team. Simple math says that the problem in wrestling is still worse.
  21. It may not be reflected as much on the yearbooks, but Tammy has started managing Candido by this point. Candido running after Tammy in the car is never not funny to me. Come to think of it, Candido running is always funny for whatever reason.
  22. Instead of The Miz or Randy Orton or whomever, The Marine 3 should star Bob Armstrong.
  23. What Greg Valentine babyface push?
  24. I don't know how my dad found out because he was never what you would call a serious wrestling fan, but he told me about blading from when I first started watching wrestling as a kid, so that's something I've known since I started watching. He used to tell me to look at wrestler's foreheads and how scarred up they were, and said that was from cutting themselves with a razorblade to draw blood, and then I saw a Dusty Rhodes promo in the WWF and that suddenly made a lot of sense.
  25. It's really too bad the Thrillseekers didn't really make it in SMW. It wasn't due to a lack of trying by Cornette, that's for sure.
