  1. I'm still intrigued by the "if it was a real sport" line. Yes, it being on SPIKE is a factor, everything you said there seems dead on. But does Dave consider MMA to not actually be a sport? I know all the "it's the same as wrestling" stuff. It's pretty much been a major thing we all make fun of and have kinda just went, "Whatever" about. But I never heard or read Dave refer to it as "not a real sport" compared to the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. I always got the impression that he felt it was just as "real" as "real" sports, given the popularity and the fact that , y'know...it IS a real sport.
  2. In case it's not already evident, I'm a huge Ronnie Garvin fan. And the Jimmy Garvin/ Flair feud may not have been accepted by Crockett fans as well as it should have been, but as a Crockett fan who was at the Philly Civic Center the night Jimmy Garvin officially turned face, I can tell you the roof blew off the place when Sharp Dressed Man hit and Jimmy ran out to be Wahoo's partner against the MXE. (The fireball angle had just aired on Worldwide THAT same Saturday in the afternoon on Philly 17, and it was supposed to be Wahoo and Ronnie vs. The MXE that night. The Express came out wearing the stolen US Tag belts, Wahoo came out by himself, got on the mic and said something like, "Oh I have a partner..." and ZZ Top blares as Jimmy charges the ring and the MXE head for cover.)
  3. Yeah, I wasn't clear. Sorry. Dave was basically saying that if an announcer in a "real sport" did that they'd be canned immediately. That's what made me think, "Wait, what?"
  4. See, on TBS for YEARS they'd do these mini Ron Garvin/ Flair feuds before 87 and Jimmy and Precious. They had lots matches on TV and at house shows, especially in 85. Ron Garvin was the utility top guy to fight Flair during and between various angles. It wasn't just Garvin challenging him in promos or Flair listing him in his "lists of guys" promos. At least that's how it comes off after watching Will's Horseman set.
  5. Holy moley. So on the latest WO Radio Dave's talking about the whole Quentin Jackson being all rapey/ Rogan calling the girl reporter a cunt deal and he says re: Rogan that the outrage is undeserved because, "If you were in a real Sport and you did this on a real network " Rogan would have been fired.
  6. Right, I got that. But how do you not immediately think "The Road Warriors!"?
  7. (insert team here) v. PG-13 would have been great. Seriously, PG-13 is one of the greatest tag teams of all time. They're on the list yes, but not towards the top Are there ten teams better than them? Maybe but I'm not sure of it. Are there 20 teams better? I'd say almost certainly not. PG-13 deserve a retrospective at some point. It doesn't matter what ten or twenty teams I choose, though, does it? I mean, you can use all of the distinctions in the world you want to ensure their supremacy over whatever team or teams I chose. I'm just not that contrarian, man. Instead of me pimping teams that are better then PG-13 without a doubt, how about you pimp...say about twenty excellent matches of theirs. EDIT: So I don't look like a complete dick, here is the list: 1. Arn & Tully 2. Rock & Roll Express 3. Fantastics 4. Midnight Express 5. Jumbo & Tenryu 6. Choshu & Yatsu 7. Misawa & Kawada 8. Misawa & Kobashi 9. Misawa & Akiyama 10. Kawada & Taue 11. Footloose 12. Can-Am Express 13. Doc & Gordy 14. Orient Express 15. Hardy Boys 16. Dudley Boys 17. Edge & Christian 18. Benoit & Malenko 19. Windham & Hennig 20. Freebirds 21. Hansen & Brody 22. The Funks 23. Hansen & Gordy 24. Tenryu & Kawada 25. Jumbo & Taue 26. Owen & Davey 27. Faces of Fear 28. Harlem Heat 29. The Enforcers 30. British Bulldogs 31. Hart Foundation 32. The Rockers 33. Rose & Somers 34. Inoki & Fujinami 35. Adonis & Murdoch I could list more, but yeah, you'll have fun disputing that. The Road Warriors don't make your list of "Better than PG-13" but a team like Owen and Davey Boy do? Guh?
  8. And Ron Garvin and Flair had a long standing feud. It's not as if Garvin came out of the blue as a guy who was feuding with Flair and was a World Title Challenger.
  9. I always got the impression that Bruno was the one who doesn't want anything to do with Vince.
  10. Ha, that reminds me. A pal of mine and his friend went to some small card at a High School gym and sent in the results to "Arena Report" in Sports Review Wrestling. They included their names as a match and they printed it. It was something like "Maniac" Mark Spanner defeated "Awful" Alfie Stern.
  11. I seriously doubt that Nikolai felt anything about the gimmick besides, "Thank God I'm working for Vince again." Shit, I'd chalk that up to Vince being a nice guy and giving a washed up guy who he always liked another run.
  12. I posted this at DVDVR and I wanted to see some memories from folks here who don't frequent the place as much. I was thinking about the days when the "Apter Mags" and the "Wrestling All Stars" group were at their peak. I LOVED the mags back then and they introduced me to so many guys and promotions that I couldn't see at the time. What are some of your favorite memories from the mags glory days? Who was the guy who you couldn't wait to see based solely on pics or stories? Who was your favorite fake reporter? What wrestlers were you super psyched to see based on the mags but were disappointed with when you did see them? What was your favorite storyline that only existed in the magazine world? I remember getting a "Wrestling All Stars" mag when I was 13 and they always listed Carlos Colon as one of the World Champions. I saw those pics of him all bloody and then him posing with that cool one strap white singlet and thinking, "This guy is AWESOME." I wanted to see World Class so bad from the mags, and when we got it on Philly 57 in 1985 I went nuts, and it didn't disappoint. I remember reading about rookie Bam Bam Bigelow and being totally sold on him. Matt Brock, crusty old rasslin' reporter who didn't exist but I thought he did was killer. I remember the mags trying to create a story about a secret alliance between all the heels in every promotion, led by Skandor Akbar and Sheik Adnan El Kaissey called something like "Operation 2000" or something like that where they had some sinister plan to take over wrestling and the Road Warriors were their first targets, as they were the strongest line of defense for America. I also became the biggest Hacksaw Duggan fan in the world without ever having seen him thanks to the mags. I also always thought that Rick Martel was a total equal to Flair and Hogan because he was AWA Champ and the mags told me he was. I sorta remembered him from his WWF days tagging with my hero Tony Garea when I was really young, and he looked like a World Champ to me. (I also got to be there live when Hansen beat him for the AWA Belt, but that's another story.)
  13. "No sir...we're of no relation."
  14. Because Vince doesn't like guys who don't need him. And maybe with time, things that didn't piss Vince off at first gnawed at him..like the Slim Jim money, or Savage signing with WCW with no notice. Or even the rumor, while not true, got so out of hand he directed his ire at Savage. Also, when did Savage record that video where he said "HHH, I had her first!" in an attempt to play off the rumor? I'd imagine that would have pissed Vince off.
  15. (insert team here) v. PG-13 would have been great. Seriously, PG-13 is one of the greatest tag teams of all time. No shit, man. I LOVE that match in ECW where they manage to heel the crowd so well that the ECW "smart" crowd just went so mark that they wanted to riot.
  16. It's more in tune that the head honcho of Grey Poupon issued a directive that says that they're only able to spend x amount of dollars on advertisements. And they don't feel that advertising on WWE television programs are the best ways to use those dollars, compared to an ad during the World Series, Super Bowl, American Idol, etc. I was joking, man.
  17. Well, for one, ad people aren't necessarily looking down on wrestling fans -- they just get that it isn't a demographic with money to burn. Now, I realize that these companies generally aren't selling expensive items...but what companies are looking down their nose or "not wanting the demographic" re: advertising on WWE because of the money spending potential of wrestling fans? DeBeer's Diamonds? Porsche? Grey Poupon?
  18. And Punk is so good at this point, nothing is gonna kill him. Shit, he's the leader of the worst gang in recent memory and he's getting them over and having fun. People are still booing him loudly, so there ya go.
  19. According to Show, being sent to OVW was less about his weight than it was his attitude and cardio. Or something like that. It was in his DVD. And Vader saying "I'm a fat peice of shit.", while really weird, was more about some sort of "he needs his killer instinct back" than it was his weight. Wasn't that supposed to be part of that aborted deal where he and Ron Simmons were being approached by Callis?
  20. I don't think Punk's losses have hurt him at all. Does anybody actually watch wrestling and think, "I can't buy this guy anymore because he lost some matches?" Especially when it's a bad guy who is supposed to get his comeuppance.
  21. Dude, don't you realize that it's all an evil plan by the maniacal Vince to "kill the Lucha tradition!". I can see him now, in the penthouse office suite at Titan Towers, swilrling his brandy while looking out to the horizon. "So, these Mexicans have their beloved Lucha Libre...well not for long. Soon, I will destroy their beloved lucha and Entertainment will reign supreme! BWAH HA H0-HA-H0HA-HA!"
  22. From the update:
  23. I don't recall ever seeing anything like that in the Apter mags. I recall seeing ads for tapes in the Observer around 1986. In fact, there was one that said it had Rich/ Sawyer "Last Battle In Atlanta" that led me to believe that it actually existed for years and years.
  24. We got ours in 85 and I immediately started taping everything. I had an amazing tape collection of WWF, Pro Wrestling USA, WorldWide, World Class, World Class Classics, and Mid South/ UWF. As well as all sorts of official releases. Sadly, they ended up in my Aunt's garage and have never been seen since 1989.
  25. Wasn't it worded in such a way that the complaint was that they were using their "intellectual property" to portray representatives of WWF on their TV who were, in fact, not employed by Vince?
