Is my memory playing me a trick or was the 95 Vader-Takada match the poorly-shot one? There are a few New Japan matches, that you did not list either in "nominations" nor in your "assuming that will definitely make the list" lists that should definitely be on this set: - Sasuke/Black Tiger vs. Pegasus/Ohtani (10/16) - great all-action jr. hv. match - Sasuke vs. Pegasus (J Cup finals) - maybe Sasuke vs. Samurai (J Cup 1/4 finals) - Sasuke vs Liger (7/8) - on the level of their J Cup match

Did the announcers really talk about the Cruiserweight title tournament still ongoing? I knew this tournament was a joke and mostly used to do a b show feud between Dean Malenko and Brad Armstrong but this is still ridiculous.

[1996-03-17-NJPW-Hyper Battle] Jushin Liger vs Shinjiro Otani
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
There is so much to love about this match. I think I haven't seen it in about ten years and I am usually really bad at remembering details of matches but I could still remember Otani's celebration of the top rope dropkick and the complete despair when Liger was too close to the rope's at the second dragon suplex. Of course those were trademarks of Otani at this time period, but I don't think he ever displayed them so great as in this match. There was other stuff to love which I did not remember: - Liger selling his arm while in offense during the early parts of the match is a thing of beauty. - Otani's counter for Liger's plancha by moving and slapping Liger in his face at the same time was brutal. - Otani seems to have learned from the Samurai match as he tries nearly the same spot the Samurai used to beat him: When Liger pulls himself up at the ropes Otani jumps at Liger's injured arm with the springboard dropkick and immediately goes for the armbar.- 11 replies

Does he write anything about the internet meltdown that led him to take down his own site?

That was not as bad as (using your terminology) NJ fanboys going gaga when Nakamura beat Ignashov in his second try.

Pillman really seems to be batshit insane here.

What was up with the UWF guys wearing masks before the match? Were they trying to mock Hirata?

[1996-02-26-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels & Roddy Piper
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
The Michaels and Bret stuff here was dying a horrible death, a five minute tirade of two guys saying "I respect you, but I think I am a bit better than you" is not what sells PPVs (or even keep TV viewers). Piper at least brought some fire into this, though I would not say he saved the segment. -
[1996-02-11-WCW-Superbrawl VI] Ric Flair vs Randy Savage (Cage)
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
The production of this is great. Apparently WCW cannot show blood at this point, so from the time Flair begins to bleed on they try not to show Flair's head at all. So this means it's all lower body shots of Savage and Flair fighting or wide angle shots. They also cut away when Flair is doing his full-moon spot. They last five minutes this turned into a radio broadcast. Oh yes, let's not forget about Michael Buffer: "He is accompanied to the ring by a woman."- 10 replies

Tiger Mask's phantom bump for Shiryu's clotheline is one of the funniest thing I have seen in a pro wrestling match in quite some time. It's also funny see all the English senior citizens in a crowd for a M-Pro match.

Back then on German TV they only showed the first four of these skits, which seem pretty harmless compared to the press conference stuff here. Around that time WWF lost their TV station and had to switch to the same station WCW was one. Amazingly WWF and WCW existed for two years on the same station till WWF quit in early 98. The really heavy shots like the whole Billionaire Ted skits were cut though.

The way they worked it would have been better if they had done a normal 2 vs. 2 tag team match (Nagata & Ohtani vs. Kakihara & Sakuraba, for example). Some guys like Ka Shin were hardly in anyway.

The way the introduced Woman here seems a bit strange to me, six women in evening gowns accompanying Savage, five being random girls and one being Woman, not even immediately recognized by the announcers. Hogan was booed pretty heavily when he demanded the title shot. It's obvious why because he again acted like a dick. Also this promo made me realize that the Bockwinkel line from the Hogan-Savage promo the week before was not some strange AWA shoot but a refence to Bockwinkel being some WCW figurehead.

Often when I watch Lucha there are some small things that confuse me a bit, here during the third fall I did not have the slightest clue what was going on (as in who is interfering why, why is the ref ignoring everything, why is Psicosis trying to kill himself again and again etc.). There was quite a big bunch of dangerously missed spots which made me appreciate the relative safeness of WWE TLC matches (at least in recent years).

[1996-01-21-NJPW-New Year Special] Shinjiro Otani vs El Samurai
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I think this was the first time I have seen this match in a complete form. I don't have much to add, though I wanted to say that this was maybe the best and most intelligent finish I have ever seen in a juniors match.- 23 replies

For All Japan the 6 man tag that set up Misawa vs. Jumbo (Misawa, Taue & Kobashi vs. Jumbo, Kabuki & Fuchi, 5/26) and clips of Misawa's unmasking (TM II & Kawada vs. Yatsu & Fuyuki, 5/14) should be there.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This is a great match, my favorite of disc 1. It does a great job of setting up Hashimoto vs. Takada (even before Takada won the title) with Hashimoto convincingly beating a top UWFI guy.- 27 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The (even for Tokyo Dome standards) complete absence of heat made this kind of hard to get through. I think I would have enjoyed this if they had wrestled in front of 20 people in some high school gym. Though Liger and Kanemoto are not completely innocent here, they didn't even try to interact a little bit with the crowd, which both are very capable of (and already were at this point).- 18 replies

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13
Robert S replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
- Never having seen any USWA I was surprised at the bad production value of some of this stuff. Apart from the studio tapings it seems to be just a one handcamera, like a random RF Video indy show taping ca. 2000. - I was amused that Lance Russell called Doug Gilbert "Tommy" continuously. - I cannot decide who looks sleazier, JC Ice or Tommy Rich, though both definitely can cut a great promo. EDIT: This comments are meant to be for the feud recap. The match itself was fine, but to short and missing any significant face-in-peril segment.- 10 replies

They shouldn't have bothered using the time-out gimmick: It played into the match only once and even then it looked bad (Razor should have been dq'ed). Otherwise I can only agree: It seems as they made a list of about 200 puns they wanted to bring in and went through all of them.
