[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Ric Flair vs Bret Hart
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Started slow, but turned out to be very good and very entertaining. Definitely the best WCW match of January 1998. One of the last hoorah's for the Nature Boy. RANKING: Current WCW MOTYC.- 13 replies

[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Kevin Nash vs The Giant
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Giant must have nightmares about coffee. I love how after the brutal bomb which Nash fucked up as if he would have dropped him after the initial lift, it would have been fine, the announcers are talking about how medical staff is out to check on the Giant and then the doctor pulls out gauze and starts wrapping his eyes. The announcers then had to be like, "oh, i guess he got burned." RATING: Nash getting rich off wrestling is one of the biggest travesties in the history of the business. Right, Schiavone?- 8 replies

[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Larry Zbyszko vs Scott Hall
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Was that a, "Larry sucks!" chant I heard post-match? If so, that's really funny. They should have let Dusty cut a long promo after this instead of saying "That's tradition" over and over as it didn't make sense. What's tradition? RATING: Flip, Fly and this turn Flopped.- 8 replies

[1998-01-24-WCW-Souled Out] Chris Jericho vs Rey Misterio Jr
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Everything shown from where we pick this up in progress is very good. The knee selling and work was great and a fun finish and even a title change to boot! Post-match was great as well. RATING: May check this out in full, but afraid I'd be disappointed.- 7 replies

Raven opens with his sovereign citizen promo about he doesn't conform. Eh, I wasn't in to this as much as everyone else seems to have been. It wasn't bad, but a decent mid-card match. Really no complaints other than it didn't stand out as anything these guys haven't done before. RATING: Nothing I think I'd need to see again.

Not the best multi-man lucha match WCW put on, but it was a fun opener no doubt. La Parka being the star of the whole thing. Pretty by-the-numbers until the ariel show. RATING: Viva La Parka

[1998-01-21-RINGS] Kiyoshi Tamura vs Mikhail Ilioukhine
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I believe this is my very first RINGS match. I may have seen stray clips of a Volk Han match, but I do think this is my first full viewing of a match. Tamura is incredibly awesome. This was a huge improvement over the last match and definitely something to revisit. RATING: Kiyoshi Fucking Tamura.- 11 replies

[1998-01-20-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I hope this doesn't represent a top tier BattleArts match because I didn't like anything, but the finish. This went from competitive hugging to an exhibition match between two BJJ white belts. It didn't help this match that the RINGS match directly followed it because that match was much, much better. I never was a fan of Otsuka. RATING: A Battle to call this Art ... see what I did there?- 12 replies

[1998-01-19-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin, Vince McMahon and Mike Tyson
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Agreed with everything said. I'd go Top 5 all-time WWF moment. Top to bottom a fantastic segment executed to perfection. Knowing how Flair's year goes, I'm pretty certain Austin wins best on the mic for 1998. This was pretty much RIP WCW. Not a quick death, but a slow, painful one, just as Vince would want it. the only negative is during the backstage where Vince is trying to calm Tyson down, right before the camera goes dark we hear Tyson yell out a homophobic slur. RATING: As I said. RIP WCW. -
The epitome of why DX, in hindsight, is just fucking pathetic. I need to take a screen grab of Triple H in his "suck the cook" apron, paper chefs hat, glasses, and lions mane hair, preferably while he's playing with a hot dog or something and tweet it to him with a smart ass caption. RATING: To think these men get to have sex with Stephanie McMahon and Nitro Girl Whisper just blows my mind.

Just furthering and probably putting the icing on the cake of Jericho's turn. Great bumping from him as Juvi and Rey take him out. RATING: WCW still doing something logical and entertaining.

Flair is great and well on his way of being best on the mic in 1998, but we all know where that goes unfortunately. Bret does get to speak more here, but that isn't a good thing, he repeats himself and pretty much says nothing until his parting line that Flair sells so well. I must admit I can't imagine that Bret came up with that on his own. RATING: Good thing "promo work" isn't the tiebreaker when arguing who is better because it is painfully obvious.

[1998-01-18-WWF-Royal Rumble] Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (Casket)
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I couldn't care less about Kane and why he turned or the logic behind his turning, blah blah blah. The bottom line is this is the way they chose to setup Kane v. Undertaker match at WM. For all of Shawn's goofy shit (see RAW the following day) he put on a hell of a show here. This is even after he cracked his back on the casket early on. That has to be applauded no matter your thoughts on the man. I hate the finish, but everything before the run-ins was really good. Not HITC level, and maybe not even there best "regular" match, but very good nonetheless. RATING: MOTY so far in January 1998 WWF.- 20 replies

This picks up just as they got the call to start dumping people in mass. Vader in at #30 and for everything they built up with him in the opener, they shit it all away immediately here. This definitely was not a surprise that Austin won/was winning. He and Rock being final two just solidified that Rock was being pushed to the moon and with "The Rock" character being fine-tuned and polished at WM14, it was only up from here. The fact that Tyson says he was high at this show explains why he said "Cold Stone" during the interview with Cole. Maybe he meant to say HE was "cold stoned." RATING: Cold Stone says I just won the rumble.

This had flashes of the Vader of 1993. This wasn't blow away, but I wasn't bored with it. It was a solidly entertaining match. The finish was fun. If they began to rebuild Vader as a monster from this point until say, SummerSlam, he could have been a huge contender for Austin. That's what I got out of it more than anything is that Vader could have finished his WWF run strong if given the opportunity. RATING: The match was good, but the blown opportunities coming out of it depresses me.

I wonder how many of these shirts they sold. I also wonder if the purchase rang up as a purchase of Hogan, and only Hogan, merchandise. RATING: It's been two years. Me marking out for the "this is a paid advertisement for the NWO," is no longer a plausible shoot idea.

[1998-01-15-WCW-Thunder] Music Video: Lex Luger vs Randy Savage
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Totally pointless. This could have used at least a small bit of narration. RATING: This just in: Luger and Savage are both wrestlers. -
[1998-01-15-WCW-Thunder] Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I'd need a huge refresher course, which I'm sure I'll get throughout '98 and '99, but this was a very good Rey/Juvi match, especially for TV. I agree with Loss when saying it's easily the best TV match in January (thus far at least). This is something I've seen a thousand times before and since, but still enjoyable. RATING: Can't go wrong with a title change on TV, especially with these two. -
Giant gives us his own rendition of the "wrist bone is connected to the arm bone, the arm bone is connected to the ..." song which ends with him gargling the words "choke slam" to finish. Then the emo-spirit squad hits the ring to get taken out. Then out comes Nash, who Giant can't touch before Souled Out, with pajama pants, sandals, a syxx shirt and coffee to antagonize Giant. RATING: Nash antagonizes me just by appearing on my TV.

Absolutely fantastic. This may be the earliest Satomura match I've seen and she's still great. LCO as the mean girls is something I love. This had the blood and the hate and the work rate. Probably my favorite match of 1998 thus far. RATING: Early MOTYC

[1998-01-14-Michinoku Pro] Mens Teoh vs Shoichi Funaki
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
A very good match that was admittedly dull in the opening stretch with fine leg work that ultimately didn't factor into the finish. The limb work also wasn't sold very well once they got into the go-go portion. I really enjoyed it despite these objections. RATING: Definitely something to revisit for January 98- 9 replies

[1998-01-14-WAR] Genichiro Tenryu vs Nobutaka Araya
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
Fat Tenryu with a weightlifting belt on, visibly blading his arm on camera is not the Tenryu I like watching. All of the actual wrestling in this match was sloppy as hell and the brawling lackluster. A couple of good spots like the dropkick to the chair off the top and, well, maybe that is it. RATING: Tenryu won a belt for this match. That's a good thing. He needs all of them he can get.- 12 replies
