  1. Easy MOTN for me and a great story. White looked the part as s threatening heel that is also a punk and Tanahashi was so sympathetic and spot on with him coming back to extinguish this punk, but even he’s rested up self isn’t enough. The Gedo interference was annoying but did lead to the dueling low balls which was entertaining. ****1/2
  2. Rewatched this for a podcast and liked it A lot more than before. Flair gets in a ton of offense and Sting looks incredible. The finish with Luger was done ambiguous enough that I could see sting giving Luger the benefit of the doubt. ***1/2
  3. I really thought I would like Jarrett more in PWO2K but he was so unmotivated and just resigned to being a dis-interesting garbage brawler here. Kanyon did a much better job of offense in the previous match. THis has the great ending and DDP could still rile the crowd up to an lather with an exciting victory but its more of a feel good moment than a good match. **1/2
  4. This impromptu match is made by Jarrett and Flair using a clip of DDP saying he would fight Kanyon anytime anyplace. DDP gets busted open early and is a great underdog here. With him knowing that Jarrett is waiting, he tries to end things early since he is hurt so this becomes a bomb fest with tons of big moves thrown at each other and Kanyon's offense being optimized. DDP is a great underdog but eventually with help from Jarrett, he succumbs to the onslaught of Kanyon and loses. ***1/4 (6.6)
  5. I talked about in the opener how I doubted what the ceiling of those six would be, Sans Stasiak, the sky is the limit for the remaining three in watching the 2000 and 2001 stuff. This was another all action tag match between the two that didn't go too long and also didn't forget that it was a tag match threading the line on having a cohesive structure. O'Haire in particular continues to be the true standout and looked like a can't miss prospect. ***1/4 (6.4)
  6. Maybe I am delusional, but I have really enjoyed Dustin's return to the promotion in 2001 and shockingly think Rick has been effective too. These two had a good brawl on Nitro and followed that up with another hard hitting match here. Nothing special but a meat and potatoes special with effective strikes feels so unique watching it now in the landscape of springboards and superkicks. Maybe its the Cornette coming out of me but this was good stuff and continued the momentum of the PPV. *** (5.9)
  7. I don't know why Yang and Karagias were paired up but they almost ruined this match. Their parings in the first half was one botch after another. Luckily they were the first two out and the rest of the match was much better. I don't know whether watching a match like this, you saw a high ceiling for most of these guys sans Helms but as far as providing an effective and entertaining match, you at least thought the four final competitors were capable and they delivered here. Helms going after Moore was the highlight. *** (6)
  8. Possibly the last great WCW match? Rey was slightly off on some of his spots and actually had Chavo giving a great performance being the glue of things here. I know Chavo is mostly maligned but this has been a good run for him both from in ring and character standpoint. REy's highspots were timed well and the finish with Chavo finally cheating his way to victory was compelling and effective. This showed the depth of 2001 WCW and the cruiser division was in good hands. **** (7.9)
  9. The opening two minutes of this had it trending towards Worst Match of the Year status. That botch by Mondo in particular was awful. THen something changed and the rest of the match was nearly flawless featuring some of the best spots we have seen before this match and quite frankly since. The bump by Mondo into the ladder was filmed perfectly and he went full impact into the ladder adding to the impact. Blade follows that up with the swantom which is absolutely fucking nuts and could have resulted in broken neck or worse but was hit perfectly. The crowd and announcers going nuts felt fitting. I had no idea how to rate this overall but it is worth watching absolutely. ***1/4 (6.7)
  10. For their version of Eddie vs Dean, this wasn't bad. The wrestling was good, the violence was expected with the way the indie landscape was turning and I actually welcomed the exemplary stalling and interference showing this had a heel/face dynamic and wasn't just an indie dream match. The powder spot playing off the finish of Berk vs Acid was a nice touch. Overall, this helped build the rep for Acid and he was someone that really impressed me in 2000. ***1/2 (6.8)
  11. Dahmer sucks but I thought this was a good opener to get the crowd engaged right away. Briscoes do clamor to the crowd a bunch but I thought they executed their moves more crisply here than the week before vs Red and Maximo. I think the 2/10 CZW showed potential of what the promotion could bring as far as a variety of matches and some up and coming potential. This show goes a step forward and is classified by me as an actually good show. This kickstarted that. *** (5.8)
  12. Not a bad generic death match with only chairs being used. This show was going to be full of stunt show spotfests and a gorefest main event so it made sense for them to go a little simple here. Still, that superplex to the floor on the table was a nuts bump and Lobo cant do anything else but take punishment well. Overall, I enjoyed this well enough. ***
  13. A fairly quick match but a great one with the pairings all shining and each playing their role well. Tarzan Boy isn't the top notch worker you might want leading a faction of rudos but he plays such a slimy rudo that is in over his head to a degree so it works. Him backing off from Juvy and Atlantis throughout was fun. Casas hasn't had a great mano y mano feud this year so far but when he has needed to deliver, he has. **** (7.9)
  14. Maybe not as good as the top six mans from DG but not too far off. BxB Hulk had a bad botch but everything else was worked nicely and the weak links like Gamma mainly stayed out of the way or were the glue to spots. Dragon Kid in particular looked amazing. ****1/4 (8.4)
  15. Big night for Panther as the list of individuals who have two **** matches in one night is thin. The unique pairings here is what sold me as seeing stuff like Panther vs Cerebro, Dandy vs Bombero and Dandy vs Panther made me want to really see long form matches of that. Scorpio and Rambo get a nice deep run in this match and provide the glue for everyone else. I do agree with OJ that this could be an awesome match with 5 more minutes or so but as it stands, its pretty damn great and a breeze to watch. **** (8)
  16. This was the first match I watched on Wessides Comp back in the day and remember being blown away that these Briscoes guys were my age and having matches like that. Now, it is just a sloppy match with some cool spots especially when Red gets going. However, if it wasn't for this match, I probably wouldn't be typing on this board today so the nostalgia is high. ***
  17. This is a good appetizer to the series they would have in a couple of months. The build to No Way Out 2001 has been two fold. HHH vs Austin was a dead feud for me coming out of the nonsense at the end of 2000 but them not touching to such extremes has been an effective tool in building up naysayers including myself into wanting to watch their match at No Way Out. The downside of that is that Raw has been pretty lackluster with a cooked Rikishi being inserted into the main event and a lot of maneuvering over what will be the stipulation. SmackDown has picked up the slack and given quality tv matches weekly. This was brawl and strike based but the intensity of Benoit matches well with Austin finding his footing as a worker after the injury. HHH Is out at ringside and does a good job creating effective interference to build up heat among the crowd until Austin picks up the win with the stunner. ***1/4
  18. This was possibly the first match that made me fall in love with El Dandy. I watched their apuestas match first and it was heated and a MOTYC but I also had recently watched MS-1 vs Chicano for the 1st time so I thought the barometer of having a super apuestas was lower. This match really shows the range of Dandy and is worked in classic lucha title match style. One thing that Charles adds is a bit of ruggedness to the ground work. The action is part dazzling, part logical and extremely effective in showing a style of wrestling mastered by Dandy. **** (8.1)
  19. Watched this for first time a couple of months ago and agree with prior review. An awesome fight between rivals with no fat. ****1/2
  20. February 2001 has been a weird month to watch. Things are interesting but feel like they are transitioning and the in ring quality hasn’t caught up to the changing landscape. I can’t think of the last month where it took to the 15th day before I had a great match marked down. This match continued the trend of weirdness in how it was worked. Still I Marveled at the intensity and how Panther wouldn’t let go working the arm and mask of Felino. Felino was extremely likable and resilient in this match and it led to a thrilling conclusion for me where the submissions had as much tension as an apuestas match. ****1/4 (8.3)
  21. Gross match with Drake getting sliced on a trash can on the back of his head and you can see his skull. That doesn’t stop him from taking nutty bumps on the head including a splash mountain to the outside on some chairs and a backdrop driver onto tacks. Sami looks psychotic and the heel/face structure really raises this beyond just a great plunder match. A thinking mans death match that also has brutality and shock factor. ****1/2 (9)
  22. Rewatching the yearbook stuff and the Lucha stuff that dragged for me first go around continued to, so this was a nice break from that. Funaki really got marred and Usuda looked more on point with his strikes than he does at times. Ikeda vs Ishikawa were just turning up what would be one of the best feuds of the next decade. Good stuff. ***1/2 (7.1)
  23. Pretty crazy match. There is certain pacing issues with Ito that never allow him to break into the upper echelon of deathmatch workers for me, but he has no problem taking some nutty bumps and insane punishment. I thought this spaced out the big spots well and mixed in some big bombs and suplexes to create near falls. The highlight spot had to be Kasais balcony dive which looked crazy and reckless. Great match. ****1/4
  24. I had a blast watching this. Mixed in nostalgia with hot action and the heel side was carried by Tracy who still had the athleticism. Rich gets busted open and this felt like a big throwback indie match in a landscape that was rapidly changing. ***3/4 ( 7.4)
  25. Some good spots but a whole lot of contrived stuff make this an uneven 3 way and a chore to sit through all the way. Blade knocking himself silly and then hitting the most breathtaking spot of the match 2 minutes later for the finish was appropriate given his inconsistency as a performer throughout 2000 and 2001. *1/2
