  1. We get a yellow streak and this feud is continuing which is fine by me as I have loved their stuff so far this year.
  2. I may have spoke too soon declaring Lawler vs. Jarrett from 96 as the best USWA studio match of the 90's. These two are in heavy contention as this was great and reminded me of the Jarrett vs. Pritchard feud from 91 in spots as well as the Gilbert vs. Jarrett match from that year. Really smart work and unique stuff going on with an invested crowd and the promotion treating it very important. Kind of a shame that with so much other great stuff this year, no way this will make my year end top 100. ***1/2
  3. Sherri has been pretty damn great in this angle and Miss Texas always seems to mix herself up in this stuff. Strong promo after being laid out by the King.
  4. Tecnicos didn't do a whole lot for me here and Javier Cruz disappointed as he can be good. That said, the Casas brothers delivered and made the match entertaining overall. Jericho did get a nice dive in going way into the crowd. Another enjoyable match although this one didn't feel like it had a lot of consequence hence it wont finish high on my overall ratings for the year. ***1/4
  5. I liked this match a good deal.I thought the minis brought good energy and had a storyline around the match to keep the action flowing. Felinito was my highlight as he was bouncing around with great grace. A good showcase to flesh out the card overall. ***1/2
  6. Kind of an interesting dynamic with Roberts screwing with Konnan but also not getting along with Caras. That being said, we just saw this type of thing in SMW and that felt executed a lot better in my eyes than what happened here. The action in between all of that was not very good at all. This is mainly here for historical significance and the shock of Konnan losing to the crowd. **
  7. Thanks Shoe, this felt more casual of a show which I didn't know how it would play out.
  8. Green Laterrn Fan prepares to ask his girlfriend to marry him. Shawn's promo was well done here. I don't think Shawn in 93 will match the highs of him in the second half of 97 and I have actually liked his babyface run in 96 more than I had imagined. Surprisingly, I think Shawn has taken a boost overall in my eyes thanks to the yearbooks.
  9. Pretty dreadful stuff with them both looking like they just walked off the set of Lonesome Dove.
  10. I can see this sticking out in Bret's mind based on the setting and the overall uniqueness flavor of the match. I think it is a good match overall but the setting makes it more memorable certainly. Bigelow does a good job working over Bret until he is able to mount a comeback and pick up what feels like an impressive victory. ***
  11. I liked this better as a match than the previous week as it was out of control and violent. Jack also had some well timed comebacks that had the crowd rocking. The spot with the powerbomb looks sick and there is a debate as to whether it should have been performed or not but for what they were going for on this night, it was damn effective. The stretcher scene with Jesse going along for the ride is a nice touch at getting over the severity of the situation. ***1/2
  12. Great promo to set up what was about to transpire and build up more sympathy for Jack.
  13. I thought this was a fine debut all things considered and Tammy was an interesting character out of the gate. Not really a heel per say but seemingly too overzealous at times.
  14. It is weird seeing Gorilla man the update center here. Also good call by PeteF in the old school feel of all of this. I always kind of liked the back story of the metal plate even though it did feel like it gave Luger an unfair advantage as a face.
  15. This was good stuff to me until the weak run in by Well Dunn. I always mark for a BJT cameo and its impressive how many years he shows up in. Lawler cleans house in kind of an off weak for Memphis. **
  16. Is this the big softball game they always seem to promote? The angle seems to have advanced from Savage to Sherri predominately.
  17. Not really a great match because Nagai was essentially a warm body, but my lord is Volk Han ridiculous. Everything he did here was smooth as silk and it was some of the prettiest shoot style work you will ever see. This was a great change of pace and really made me notice Han more than anything else in the 90's so far including his classic matches. ***3/4
  18. I thought this was awesome with Toyota being the hometown person and Aja looking like the biggest ass kicker in the world. With other aspects of 1993 joshi so far this year on the yearbook, Aja hasn't been featured that much so this was a good showcase for her. The Kyoko vs. Manami sequences are always great and athletic in small doses. I didn't notice Hotta dominating here but I didn't mind it much in the confines of this match where Toyota was beat on so much. The ending felt like a dramatic culmination. One of the joshi highlights so far. ****1/4
  19. Old school set up but effective stuff. Funk vs. Gilbert feels like a program that would help jump start a promotion.
  20. Kind of a directionless Bret promo at times with Bret just saying he will come back. He seems to be gearing up with a feud vs. Luger since Hogan and Yoko are tied up. Weird timeframe for the company overall.
  21. I got to say I was extremely disappointed by the clips here. After the hot angle in studio, this was a one sided beatdown by Savage and both guys felt pretty generic in their action. I know its tough to gauge one match but this felt like a big money match for the promotion and I feel they didn't deliver at all. Sherri doing her routine and getting stripped on the cage is entertaining like usual but this felt like the wrong place. Most disappointing thing of 1993 so far.
  22. This was a great match and had a gritty feel that really shows itself. I know business was shit and we are getting to some Lost in Cleveland stuff coming up, but I have enjoyed WCW tons more so far in the first few months than I expected. This had mat work and rough strikes all around. Windham has been extremely versatile so far and seems poised to become the ace of the promotion which is sad as what would result really soon. Regal looks good for himself and actually timed the babyface stuff well to get the crowd behind him. ****
  23. It is rare when I feel too dumb for a match but that happened here. I wasn't even bothered by the length. This felt like the top heel of the early 80's facing off against someone that was a generation below here in a battle of supremacy and respect. The opening matwork gave way to myriad of stuff that even included a weapon battle in the middle that felt out of place but almost like a test session. The match was multi-layered and long with an epic finishing stretch. I am really perplexed by a match like this because I loved multiple parts of it and yet see all the criticisms of it as valid. An interesting dilemma and a fun match to ponder on. ****1/4
  24. This was really well done. I don't know when Jerry was last a heel in Memphis? Was it 1990? Anyway, the subtelety of feeling like no one helped him set the stage here. As the match progresses, we get more and more cheating culminating in a chain being used to secure the win and tag belts for Dundee and Lawler. USWA in 1996 feels unique with longer studio matches than I can remember throughout the decade and strong storytelling overall. **1/2
  25. I was really weary of this in the beginning knowing how much time was left on the disc and that only a USWA match followed it. The opening was sloppy and lifeless feeling. Yet, when they started using the chain and brawling on the outside, this turned around in a big way and the finish down the end was dramatic and well down with the spinning back fist wrapped in the chain being a definitive ending. The wadrobe choices also gave this a cool vibe. I can't fathom someone prefering this match since it was methodical too at times like the Toyoto/Kudo match but this was a great match in its own right in my opinion. ****
