[1993-01-09-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Heavenly Bodies
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
This was fun. I love when three teams each have a stake and in the case of Fuller and Golden, you think they are initially allies of the RNR but then they swiftly turn on them and beat them up until Smothers and Horner make the save. The action of the match looked really good and I love when cornette is in matches just based off of his wrestling attire. -
[1993-01-02-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Doink the Clown

Count me in as someone who has liked the Doink snippets we have seen going through the early Raws. I look forward to all of his havoc and this was a good introduction.- 13 replies

[1993-01-09-WWF-Superstars] Update: Razor Ramon attacks Owen Hart
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
This was good and make me actually want to seek out the Razor vs. Bret match on the network as I remember it being solid. Beating up Owen at this point seems like a good idea to get to Bret. -
Good match and I agree this is a baseline for what is a loaded year. Misawa feels like the ace which is a nice contrast tow here he was at in the 1990 and 1991 stuff.. Taue leading his charge was nice to see and AKiyama on that side of things was odd but we do see him starting out right there in the big boys and not totally getting overmatched. I look forward to 93 All Japan probably more than anything else throughout the year. (***1/4)

Clunky yes, but it fit the narrative of this big beefy fight. This is certainly a match I wouldn't have liked a few years ago when I highly valued execution. Even today, it still kind of prevented this from reaching the great level but as it was, it was a really good main event dome style match. Tenryu is a bad ass outsider that isn't unwilling to step right into the enemy turf and punch its chief in the mouth. Admirable stuff and the capper to an overall weird show for me that I enjoyed even if everything didn't exactly work. (***3/4)

I am not a Steiners guy and I thought they have had plenty of better spotsfests with other opponents. This is really turning out to be the weird show overall as I am having opposite reactions than most of the previous commenters. It was a lot of fun power stuff but I'm not sure the match was good and it had a cop out finish to boot. (**3/4)

[1993-01-04-NJPW-Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome] Great Muta vs Masa Chono
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
I was really disappointed in this. Took forever to get going and the long ramp spots felt more goofy than the Ultimo botches in the previous match. Too disjointed that by the time the finish game, I had lost a lot of interest. Disappointing as I have liked these two a good bit in other matches but something was really off here for me. [1993-01-04-NJPW-Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome] Jushin Liger vs Ultimo Dragon
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
I am usually higher on Dome junior matches than others because i don't let the dead crowds get to me. As a result, I thought this was really good and being unfairly judged based on some botches. Don't get me wrong, the botches are bad but the other stuff like the super spots and everything else felt dare I say it fresh. LIger also seemed motivated to make something out of a less than game Ultimo. (***1/2)- 13 replies

[1993-01-02-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/ Arn Anderson
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
I love these. Arn is great at being captivating doing low key interview stuff. We learn he isn't working with a contract which enrages Jesse and Arn also has some choice words for Erik Watts.- 13 replies

[1993-01-02-WCW-Saturday Night] Special Report: WCW World title change recap
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Kind of a weird way to announce a new world champion even by 1993 standards but this did convey a good Breaking News feeling to it.- 11 replies

Samples and Miller feel like C-list foils for Lawler but Miller does endear himself to me by hurling the chair at Lawler and they do have a good pull apart considering the individuals involved. I am really looking forward to 93 USWA as again most of it is completely new stuff to me.

First one that popped into my head was the AWA match with Blackwell having to take shots at people as he made his way to the back.

Should have edited that DDP didn't have the sake desperation compared to himself in other matches throughout the year, not in comparison to sting and Luger.

Loved the video and the clips spliced in. One thing I admire about Memphis at times is they don't shy away about people leaving and they treat them with respect on the way out. Dundee talks about what lies ahead and says he will have to be wearing a suit in his new position. He promises to run the loop one more time to give thanks to the fans.

Really good tag to start the footage watching off. Good shine to start and the arm work on Pillman was brief but great. Barry and Pillman are a hell of a tag team here doing tandem moves and working a great dynamic of BW being the bruiser and Pillman mixing in highspots in a heel manner. The ddt on the floor looked brutal. I rolled my eyes when Dustin subbed in because it was ridiculous and sort of made you side with the heels but Jesse's furious commentary almost made up for it. Great cast shot gets the pin for the faces. Post match promo was really good with the fired up heels and I dig Barry in the unkept heel persona role. ***

Kudos to Luger for pushing for the name change as it was for the better. Bobby puts him over huge on the promo but this felt very old feeling with the backdrop. Okerlund reading the description was good follow up.

Mean Hitman gets stopped in his tracks by a kid screaming his name. I didn't remember this if it was 1993 or 1994 myself but it feels like a good way to start off a new year of footage watching.

They LOVED Brother Love. I marked hard when Warrior finally destroyed the set in early 1991.

Naylor name dropped on the podcast today with Bray Wyatt with the genesis of his entrance music was cool. Good interview overall and maybe Austin's show is turning it back around.

Give all credit to Scott for uploading the file. I did listen to this last night and thought it was a lively discussion and really captured a conversation vibe of a group of friends sitting around the living room discussing something.

I was low on the main event too. The action was not bad up until the finish but not all that inspiring either. Dolph bothers me with his selling sometimes in that he relies on playing complete dead and then finding a sudden burst of energy way too much. A little subtlety would go a long way in his overall babyface act. Sting's pop coming out honestly felt about as low as it possibly could be to me for someone of his stature debuting in a new environment. It didn't feel organic at all like the Mizdow stuff and the crowd had to talk themselves into the "this is awesome" chant. Also, we just got done recording a show discussing heels. HHH's reaction when Sting came out is indefensible to me. Compare it to Arn at Clash 17 and see who got the better heel reaction. HHH just stared at him for five minutes with a wont back down attitude. Steph carried the ending segment showing ass for him. The Dolph moment is nice and I will reserve some of the qualms I have on him or his ceiling until I see what the follow up is. However, THIS was the free show to drive up network viewers and coming out the biggest thing is Dolph without a ready made feud for him (I guess they could maybe do Rollins again) and a 55 year old facing HHH at Mania. That doesn't exactly seem like a great idea to me into gaining eyeballs and past fans of a bygone era to invest in your network.
