  1. We cut to Hall clobbering Scott in the corner with a clothesline and punches. Scott is able to hit a butterfly suplex and refuses to tag Rick. Scott runs into Rick accidentally and makes the tag. Hall is unaware of this and Rick hits the bulldog on the unassuming Hall and The Steiners are the new WCW tag champions.
  2. Pretty much a talking shop promo by The Outsiders. The survey does at least favor the NWO in El Paso as we even get an NWO chant going to break. Hall has a warning to Macho and Nash gives a shout out to Syxx Pac.
  3. So this match wasn't even the main event of this show? Wow. Savage dives from the top rope right into the guardrail in a nasty looking spot. Hogan grabs a chair and Liz takes it from him. This allows Savage to throw Hogan into the post and hit him with a few chair shots. Back inside, Savage hits his elbow drop. Bagwell stops the count and all of the NWO comes out and pounces on Savage. Hogan pastes him with a chair on top of the head and it looks like Savage and the NWO is no more.
  4. Austin 3:16 promo is one I would add to my list and throw around. The first Vince stunner I am less sure of. I was tempted to add Bret Screwed Bret to the list and think it is at least a contender.
  5. This came up in the 1998 footage thread and it is something that I am interested to hear the opinions on from people around here. Here are the slam dunks in my opinion: 1. Hulk beats Iron Shiek 2. Hogan slams Andre 3. Montreal Screwjob Beyond that, I think an argument can be made for numerous other moments including Koloff beating Bruno, Snuka diving off the cage, Double Hebners, WM7 Savage/Warrior aftermath, Tyson vs. Austin, WWF buys WCW, etc. Which moments would make your list?
  6. Sounds like we had almost opposite thoughts Paul. I can say with the shoot style stuff I have watched in the past few years, that I have a less clear sense of what really can draw me into matches of that style vs. other styles in wrestling. What I saw as meandering and nonthreatening in the first portion of this match, you saw as a chess match being waged which is vantage point I can understand.
  7. Here is my logic perspective for this. Two of Flair's greatest ten wins in his career came off a dive from the top rope. I can't recall a time where Flair was pinned after being thrown off. The risk/reward is there for me to conceivably see why he goes to the well each time. I have certain things in my work and auditing figures that dont work 99% of the time. The 1% when they do reduce my workload tremendously. As a result, I also check even with the enormous failure rate.
  8. I asked Loss about this and he stated that Hogan's contract was up and he put "feelers" out to WWF to drive up his negotiation power with WCW. In all retrospect, he had no intention of jumping but I guess it was a slight possibility. Savvy businessmove on Hogan's part in my opinion.
  9. This is one of the more infamous matches. Of course, you watch this match looking for all the moments of miscommunication and try to sift out what is the true story going on here. I do subscribe to the theory that Regal tried to make Goldberg look foolish but that Goldberg was put in a pretty poor position and handled it mostly well. Some of the stiff strikes in this match work and make it great to watch, but other times, it is clear they are lost and having to reset. Eventually we get the same spear and jackhammer combo to end the match but the journey to get there was a world of difference form the other Berg squashes up to this point. (*3/4)
  10. Hogan comes out and says tonight he will settle this once and for all with Macho. He will give Macho some tough love and warns him to take his lumps and then rejoin the family. BROTHER, BROTHER, BROTHER. Macho is back in the stands and he has some words for Hogan and says that no one in El Paso, Texas (huge pop) will be able to stop him. This felt really big but it also felt like the beginning of Nitro reaching too hard with their main events and looking desperate at the pressure WWF was putting on them. Sting vs Macho and Hogan vs. Macho has now been the main event two consecutive weeks not to mention the Sting vs. Hogan rematch the night after Starrcade. 1997 didn't seem to have any big matches they did that with besides the Robin Hood Giant/Hogan match. Cracks are starting to widen ever so slightly.
  11. A complete shame that we only get 9 out of the 23 minutes of this one. I should be thankful for the finishing run we do get because it is fantastic, but that graphic at the end made me sigh and groan with displeasure. We get some great palm strikes and back and forth action between these two. The way Liger's arm gives out on the top rope suplex is really clever and is another notch in his "screw up on moves to get over worked body parts" belt. Liger overall in this match makes a great case for how his storyline in matches make them next level, not state of the art dives. I will be interested to see in what people think of the actual finish and whether the right guy won or not. I won't be rating this since we got less than half of the build up to the finish but in all of the 90's matches that I know was taped that we don't have in full, this pretty firmly at the top.
  12. Douglas gives a promo trying to explain the turn and it still makes no sense to me. He seems like the one that has the issue with Taz, not Bigelow who has the PPV main event coming up. In fact, Bigelow doesn't even speak in this promo so he has been phased out. Candido gives an excitable promo giving a rant to how gullible and stupid Storm was. I didn't dig this at all either.
  13. This made no sense to me. Bigelow tags in Taz who cleans house. Bigelow gets some licks in as well. Taz grabs the TV belt and rubs it in Shane's face and then stupidly throws it down. Bigelow of course waylays him with it and the swerve is on. Storm looks a little confused and Candido decks him. We have a new triple threat faction of Bigelow, Douglas, and Candido. The booking of ECW feels really off here as this felt like a turn that just happened to happen and try to rile up the fans. It feel really flat on my tv screen and was nonsensical in execution.
  14. Gedo comes in fresh and takes apart Tajiri's arm. This is the crux of the entire match essentially before Tajiri's comeback at the end. I can't say Gedo is the most exciting wrestler in the world and he prevents this match from being great, but he at least was focused. Tajiri's sell job was really great and his big win at the end feels like a big coronation moment a step below a JCup victory. I really like limb work matches that have a payoff, so this was right up my alley from an entertainment perspective even if I would have liked to have seen more variety and hate displayed from Gedo. (***1/4)
  15. This was a real hybrid style match that didn't last long but packed a lot of punch. Tanaka utilized multiple submission and strike attempts and Tajiri was there to just hang on. Tajiri ends up picking up the victory and advances vs. Gedo. Solid stuff for 7-8 minutes. (**1/4)
  16. Nothing match but an opportunity for D-X and the NAO to attack Austin. They tie him up to the ropes and Shawn does a great job at rubbing the title in his face. All of a sudden, Cactus and Funk come running down to clear house. That was disappointing considering how serious they portrayed it before. Feels a lot like Lawler coming back in the show he was run over by a car with.
  17. Goldust comes out as Marilyn Manson as Marc Mero serenades us with "The Beautiful People". Funny stuff again.
  18. Should be recording GAB in next two weeks or so, finishing up the busy season at my work currently.
  19. Why is it silly though for Flair to do that in every match when he has had some successful world title wins from aerial moves but it isn't for Kobashi and Misawa?
  20. Owen is still getting great pops, even bigger than Bret honestly. This match was a good contest to fill some tv time and show how resentful NAO was after the incident with Cactus and chainsaw. They did more wrestling than I would have imagined and Owen's hope babyface spots are timed really well. Owen is able to lock in the sharpshooter and Road Dogg comes in for the DQ. The rest of D-X comes down and the beatdown on Owen commences. Owen being led up the stage creates a lot of danger to the proceedings based on what happened earlier. HHH gives him a ddt on the stage. HHH then instructs NAO to swing Owen to the floor from the stage as officials come in to stop it. (*1/2)
  21. I am really digging these behind the scenes clips we are getting of Funk and Cactus before they beat the shit out of each other. It kind of makes the Charlie gimmick a lot better as its not just him running around in pantyhose and no one pretending it is Funk. Funk meets Cactus at the entranceway and eats a chair. Cactus suplexs a ladder onto Funk. They do an inside cradle spot down the ramp which was really humorous for a hardcore match. Back inside the ring, Funk unloads his garbage can full of more garbage cans. He takes two shots right to the noggin for his troubles. Cactus hands Funk the trash can and allows himself to get hit. Funk is having second thoughts but then obliges when cactus turns around. Cactus piledrives Funk with a trash can on his head in a painful looking spot as we go to break. We come back with Funk doing the windmill ladder spot at the top of the entranceway. Funk gets backdropped into the dumpster and the mandible claw is locked on. We then get a Cactus elbow from the Titantron. This leads to the NAO coming out and tieing the lid shut on the dumpster. They then send the dumpster off the ramp intensifying this feud even further. Ross's reaction is amazing showing extreme fear at the individuals inside. They play this up as a serious event and that Cactus and Funk are in danger health wise. Vince is out there and Flash Funk is wanting to fight them to a great reaction. The match was actually fairly innovative and quite good for the time it lasted. (**3/4)
  22. Jr informs us that Mania sold out in 90 seconds. DX comes out in Uncle Sam garb and HHH informs us via signage that he is standing at 8". Balloons fall from the roof. Michaels is still angling for a Austin vs. Tyson match and tries to start up a let them fight chant. Glass shatters and we get the first big staredown between Austin and HBK. Austin says he damn well can beat the crap out of Mike Tyson. Austin says winning the Rumble meant that Shawn's ass belongs now to Stone Cold. HBK is taking this seriously which is a nice touch from his usual antics. Austin makes sure to talk about taking the belt which is another nice touch. Both shirts get ripped and Austin leaves ranting at both members of D-X. Great opening segment to really kick start this feud.
  23. HHH informs us that between 9:00 and 10:00 PM they will only use the words ass, damn, and hell. He then gets bleeped through a bunch of words he will use. 10:00 to 11:00 PM doesn't give them any more additional words. I do admit them cussing and the D-X sensor going back and forth is funny. The lines Sleeze referenced above are good too. This is taking a in the news story and having a fairly clever wrestling tie in with it.
  24. This match being a Nitro main event seems like a waste especially considering they main event a PPV a mere two months from now. Savage is pounding away on Sting on the outside. Savage hits a great piledriver that Sting no sells. Stinger splash is hit on but the second one misses and Sting hits his forhead on the exposed turnbuckle. Savage hits the elbow drop and Tony calls it the biggest upset ever. Hogan rushes in to stop the three count. Hogan slaps Savage and Luger runs out and grabs Savage and beats him up on the outside. Hogan just stands there but then has to deal with Sting. Sting fends off NWO B-crew and Hogan is able to bail. Sting has been made to look like a complete goof since Starrcade.
  25. Nash is back to wearing NWO gear. He gets a great reaction coming out. Nash has exception with Kidman using a variation of the powerbomb in the previous match. Nash is angling for a size discrimination suit. He is really playing up the bad ass rebel role here garnering a lot of cheers from the crowd. He is too big, too talented, too sexy, and too sweet to be contained by WCW.
