I liked this as another good way to keep the feud continuing with both men not necessarily having to interact with each other.
-
I don't know why Tony and Co didn't make a bigger deal out of Hall being there unless we missed something. We also get some Hall and Larry Z teases. This was one of my least favorite NWO stuff with too much inside lingo like talking about the gate.

[1997-04-28-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Ric Flair & Roddy Piper
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1997
Flair/piper basically demand the wolfpack tonight. Flair gets a huge reaction when he starts strutting. -
Timing of Austin/Taker was suspect but their interaction here got a ton of heat and I thought it was the best way they could hype the match up against each other. This finish just kept developing as you knew something would happen. Neidhart ambushing Austin on the ramp was well done and Bret sends him over the ledge with a crutches shot. The show ends with Pillman at his maniacal best.
-
Austin giving up the charade that he would sit in the wheelchair was great. Bret makes a promise, will he be able to follow through on it?
-
Man Rocky was still rough here 6 months in. His punches look bad, the transitions look bad, even the Rock Bottom was awkward. Owen wins the IC belt but the real treat is the celebration and how the boos escalated once Owen joined Bret/Davey up on the stage. Perfect heeling.
-
What a great promo from Bret. It was really dense in both imagery and adjectives he was throwing out but done in a great way that put a ton of heat on him. These past two weeks with Hogan gone from Nitro have sort of hurt the flow of that show and even though cool stuff is still happening on Nitro, it feels like Raw is really becomming the must see stuff.

[1997-04-28-WWF-Raw] Brian Pillman, Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith and Steve Austin
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1997
Really controversial feeling stuff from Pillman with the kneeling and hand raising. I dont know if it was legit or how they were playing it but you got a little sense of uneasiness from Owen and Bulldog when they joined him. Austin chases them out and does feel like a bonafide top babyface for probably the first time. Really unique stuff overall. -
Bobby's last good singles match? This match wont be in my top 100 on the year or anything but for an 8 minute B show fun match, it is tough to get better than this and this would be something that would get some play if it happened on Main Event now. Eaton's punches and brawling to counteract the wrestling of Malenko was a great contrast.
-
Glad to know there is some dissension on the shoot/work ratio as watching this match the only reoccurring theme I could come up with was weird. The action was fine but everything felt so disjointed and kind of cautious. I wont rank it for purposes of uncertainty but it was the least entertaining Rings stuff of the set so far to me.

In some ways seeing the promo by nash here, you can see how both WWF and WCW later on tried to get behind him as the man. This was fabulous work as everyone unimportant stayed out of the way and let Syxx and Nash spotlight themselves to hype Slamboree. I should have mentioned this in Mysterio vs. Syxx but Tony also mentions that Ray Traylor and VK wallstreet are no longer NWO or something.
-
I can't decide if this was incredibly cheesy or secretly bad ass. I liked Grace Jones cameo. Robert Vaughn and the production crew hamming it up I was less impressed with. Overall not a bad way of keeping Hollywood on everyones mind.
-
Rey's highspots looked gorgeous here. Syxx was also able to lead him through the meat of the match effectively. Rey did a terrific sell job off the Nash powerbomb and I enjoyed this segment and match greatly including JJ running down at the end.

This was a good promo by Patrick saying that he basically joined the NWO out of necessity due to disagreements with things happening in WCW. Now those same things he disagreed with are part of the NWO. It makes since in a sort of convoluted type way and he says he can remain loyal

This angle feels really hokey and dumb in a vaccum. About the best thing you can say is that Mortis' superkick to Glacier looked real good. Wrath is revealed to almost no reaction and Tony screaming about how huge he is. Looks pretty bad just coming off the stuff we saw on Raw.
-
We end the show with an Austin promo with Vince. Vince is practically gleaming throughout the whole promo. OWen/Bulldog break it up and we have another good pull apart with McMahon getting more physical. Shawn is able to scurry them away but that just leaves an opening for tie dye pants crazy ass Brian Pillman. He beats the crap out of Austin until he is scurried away by Michaels. I really wish Pillman was healthy around this time.

[1997-04-21-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart vs Steve Austin (Street Fight)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1997
This was an exhilarating 20 minutes of wrestling. The street fight portion was on par with some of their other intense brawling and everything resulting from the injury angle of Hart to Gorilla and Austin trading jabs backstage was awesome. The moment in the ambulance of course is extremely memorable and really puts this feud over the top. -
This topic was begging for some Mookie analysis but I didn't want to push the issue. Looking at this, I find it incredible how much people wrestle on TV today compared to before. The fact that someone like Dolph (who still feels like a youngster in a lot of ways) is two spots behind Hogan on total TV time and at this rate will eclipse him in total matches on TV at the end of 2014.

The most interesting guy to me is Punk. If the territory existed today, I can see him being more sporadic in where he works and he would be the top guy working multiple territories until he had a falling out.

I'm going to say that Shamrock vs. Sano is better on first watch through but this coming right after the lifeless mat work of the AJPW tag this was really impressive in how it kept my attention. Like Phil mentions, the flourishes of pro wrestling Suzuji added only enhanced the match for me. Great stuff and the crowd was molten at the ending stretch before the draw.

This was probably my least favorite of the series and really felt like a time killing match for the majority of the first half. Williams especially would do some semi decent interesting stuff but then there would be no follow up. The ending run was hot and heated but they had a long journey keeping me interesting and lost me throughout the opening 20 minutes. Disappointing considering the crowd was great.
