This is my #3 MOTY so far and I loved the progression and beauty of the work this match consisted of. The first fall flowed with respectful matwork that looked like a carryover of the Davis/Dundee work. Second fall was quick but served its purpose. Third fall really ramps up the intensity and desperation with big moves, dives, and chances taking. The ending sequence was beautiful and it felt like a huge win for Atlantis. Not at the absolute high end of a Azteca vs. Dandy but certainly a great, great match in my eyes.

[1991-08-09-SWS] Genichiro Tenryu & Ashura Hara vs Road Warriors
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
This shit was done in like 6 minutes. Extremely disappointing and I am way over hara being in a competitive match. Tenryu also didn't look like he could be bothered to salvage anything from the Road Warriors here. We then get everyone raising each others hand at the end. -
Hogan was shaven on the movie set so he has busted out the 5 o clock shadow type concoction. You knew where this was headed but it was performed well. I don't know how safe it was, but Sting zipping down fromm the rafters so quick and repelling up was an awesome visual and its clear where the big angle is headed WCW wise months out.

Good wolfpak promo. It feels like they are a little directionless here but they do reel it end still having a go at Piper and Flair.

I feel like one of the bigger Larry Z fans on this board but he needed to shut the fuck up. Being ignorant on the rules and letting Tenay shine is one thing, taking a condescending tone is another. The action was frantic and this was a perfect showcase spotfest. We got some fast matwork sequences and then some crazy dives. The dive that Calo did into the third row felt straight out of ECW and the corkscrew plancha looked great after Tenay hyped it up. Tons of fun and up there with the Faces of Fear as the best Nitro match so far.

I do like that even when the people arent live at the show, WCW finds ways to mix them in. Savage keeps the hype going for the GAB match and hopefully will make a live appearance next week.

Dungeon of DOom feels really sad at this point in 1997. Konnan has had enough but the closeup of him reveals that he is trying way too hard.

[1991-08-09-NJPW-Violent Storm: G1 Climax] Masa Chono vs Shinya Hashimoto
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Great match, one of my favorites for the year and an effective way of making a time limit draw mean something and help both competitors. The mat work was snug and had a purpose showing the countering of Chono, then the final 15 minutes were just dramatic great stuff that even though I was guessing would result in a draw, I wasn't sure up to the end. I especially liked the Samoan drops that Chono would give. Really glad I saw this one.- 11 replies

I think it is fine for me to rank this with the other around 10 minute super tag matches in history. I thought it was fantastic. Shawn is incredibly good and when he did the baseball slide spot, I was alarmed to think that we are less than 10 months from him being done for 4 years. The work is frantic and keeps a great pace but we have tons of good action thrown in capped with a hot finish and the unwilling partners winning the belts. Austin pummeling Hart at the end was the cherry on top. Super stuff.

This was very rare at the time but by now I feel like I have seen the Dude Love and Snuka cage stuff as much as him falling off the Hell in a Cell. I can still appreciate how this is produced especially showing the bald spot in foley's hair from him pulling it out and the story on Shawn.

Very quick promo and Taker sounds like a lawyer with this nonanswer.

Opening promo was definitely extreme and full of "attitude". I did dig the target line a lot. This match was a ton of fun with Lawler getting an Edge in Canada throughout it. The brawling elements were done well and Lawler is able to sneak out a cheap victory much to the delight of the audience. Post match with him rolling down the ramp felt very Memphis.

[1991-08-09-NJPW-Violent Storm: G1 Climax] Keiji Muto vs Tatsumi Fujinami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
The least sucessful of the G-1 matches thus far. I liked the sentiment of Fujinami grounding Muto but I'm still having some trouble with Muto and Chono in singles matches especially Muto as it is abrupt from him selling to the big comeback with him looking fresh as a daisy. The crowd popped big so this may be a good match to analyze in that I didn't think it was very good at all but the crowd was a fan so YMMV on how successful it was.- 8 replies

[1991-08-09-NJPW-Violent Storm] Jushin Liger vs Akira Nogami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I thought this was super. LIger has an ability to work really well at building up the matwork into an exciting finishing stretch. Nogami I thought was fine here but certainly kind of bland. The upset felt less deserved watching in the yearbook context that the two the preceded it. -
Another upset and worked in a different way from Choshu/Chono but effective. Vader has not had a ton of performances in 1991 but has looked good to great in every single one. Fujinami is not what he was in the 80's but can play a good underneath babyface.

I am alarmed that Owen Hart got 74 votes.

[1991-08-07-NJPW-Summer Night Fever G1 Climax] Riki Choshu vs Masa Chono
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I liked this match a good deal. If scoring on points, Choshu would have been ahead going into the finishing stretch but there was enough sprinkling in of key spots for Chono that made his submission look more inevitable and less of a fluke. Really excited to watch the highlights of this tournament.- 13 replies

[1991-08-05-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Jake Roberts vs Typhoon
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Hart laughing at Jake falling to the outside in the early going was funny. We get the end of face Jake and I guess a payoff to the feud with the Disasters getting chased away not unlike WM 5 vs. Andre. -
Beffy tag but I can't help but feel I would rather see Tenryu doing something else. Yatsu looks pretty rough and Hara was looking worse for wear in 1988. Haku fit in well and seem motivated even busting out a good dropkick. I don't know where that bottle he grabbed at the finish was headed but Tenryu's team is able to secure the win.

[1991-08-04-WCW-Main Event] Richard Morton vs Bobby Eaton
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I really liked this match and appreciated the punching and kicking and short cuts Morton used to differentiate from the flying head scissors and arm drags that you saw when these two matched up with the roles reversed. I think Morton could have looked more corporate and been more effective as his gear here was straight up SMW RNR stuff. REally fun match surrounding all the shitty booking happening in WCW.- 12 replies

[1991-08-03-TWA-Summer Spectacular] Cactus Jack vs Eddie Gilbert (2/3 falls)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Feel close to Pete and Childs, probably not a MOTYC and I do still see some of the flaws like in the Brazos vs. Guerrero trios, but I would consider this a great match and more than that two great performances from the individuals involved. The first fall was my favorite with a wild out of control feel and tons of weapons used resulting in blood and pain. Stretcher matches usually result in seeing who can race down the aisle fastest but they kept up the pace here with good action and more big bumps including the glass spot Loss mentioned. The Cage portion was actually my least favorite and felt a little anticlimatic. The finish was well done for a non finish in this type of match. A tough match to watch at times since it is 40 minutes with no commentary and not pro shot, but really rewarding to see. -
Peg me down as a fan of Leatherface's vignette as it had all the makings of a B-movie horror cinematic classic. The firends going against each other stuff with Davis and Dundee was good and damn if when they got in the ring the matwork didn't look really snug. I was really pissed at the abrupt ending from the break and the quick signoff from Dave Brown.

This is something I can get behind. Cornette and lane are so good here and the awkwardness of Cox actually adds to it. Cornette saying, "oh and steve cox" made me laugh out loud. Really interested to see this develop.

Badd is giving jewelry to Blossom and Austin is jealous, yippee. Another vacant title and tournament. For fucks sake. The omni gets built up as the site of the US title tournament.

I cant believe these two things aired on the same show, its like Warrior is on Orphan Black or something. The casket angle with what Jake was saying was good but the overall theme and atmosphere was so hokey, I couldnt get into it. The promo with Sid/HOgan/Warrior and the whose side is Sid on feels like a pretty poor way to build up a main event. Does Hogan also not have to defend the WWF belt anymore?
