May not be a bad idea to set up a separate forum since DVDVR is so spotty.

Below the GOAT-candidates: Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in The Microscope
I think we have enough of Tully to judge him fairly, I just know of what I have seen, I wouldn't give more than one minute thought to Tully as the GOAT and that makes him sort of the gatekeeper for Tier 3 to me. My pyramid flow would be: Tier 1: The 7-8 guys I wouldn't bat an eyelash if anyone had them at #1 and the people I would deliberate strongly over Tier 2: I would hear out an argument if you think they are the GOAT and give it some thought (Schneider pushing Fujiwara is best example I can think of for this) Tier 3: Unequivocally great worker when looking at the career as the whole just never reached the plateau or consistency of others (would probably put all of the not enough footage strong candidates at the tail end here) Tier 4: Very good to great worker for most of their career with a bevy of very good to great matches -
Below the GOAT-candidates: Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4

Some More Possible Tier 2 Candidates: El Hijo Del Santo Blue Panther Liger Bret Hart (Ducks for Cover) Tier 3; Dundee Eaton Tully Benoit One problem to me that we run into here is again the subjectiveness of opinion. Fujiwara would be at best a tier 2 candidate for me. That is not understating him but I can't foresee any situation where he makes my personal top 12. Similarly, Shawn would be high on a lot of people lists even folks that have seen a good portion of Japanese stuff -
Piggybacking on this as I also rewatched the main matches last night and liked all of them just as much (Brock vs. Punk) or more the second time around (Christian/Del Rio, Bryan vs. Cena). Bryan vs. Cena really jumped up in my eyes in the fact that watching live, I was a bit jarred by the style of match they were going for and figured it would take on a more fighter vs. wrestling context like the opening minutes did. Everything from Bryan's STF is wonderful and the fighting spirit slap fest that could feel really hokey and hollow in most other matches felt substantial and a huge turning point for Bryan in this match. I think they pretty much rewrote the template on a face vs. face match.

Credential and set him up in the equivalent of a press row Bix? If they did, then I do find it odd he doesn't go then.

Yes, I remembered hearing your voice on something before but had predated it to the old Segunda Caida days. Anyway, I am looking forward to getting to the Sheik vs. Backlund match. I watched that one a while ago like the Valentine vs. Backlund draw and again thought it was probably Sheiks best non Slaughter match that I could think of right off hand.

Another great show guys and Shoe you did good (not sure if this was your podcast debut or not). Sorrow's love for Albano knows no bounds. I am looking forward to the Valiants and seeing Jimmie in an WWWF setting period.

I think it mostly boils down to the fact that UFC credentials Dave and sets him up on press row. WWE doesn't do this. The one and only WM Dave has seen live is 12.

More in the Shoe/Loss camp. Match was good but it didn't reach the tone of the previous match and after the hot opening it fizzled big time. Doc didn't have enough stuff to fill time and the finish was very anticlimatic.

Exciting finishing stretch with the win feeling like Misawa's biggest acomplishment since pinning Jumbo. I do think the blood added to the desperation overall and Gordy looked better here than he does in some All Japan matches because we just got the finish and his big power moves.

This may be one of my favorite Steiner Matches period. We had some sense of structure and the Steiners were able to hit all their power moves cleanly. I was tremendously entertained. My favorite spot was the superplex, elbow smash combo down by Hase/Sasaki. Hase has had a really strong year overall.

Great way to keep a feud interesting with an intense brawling match, Luger getting pissed at his mask being ripped, but Honaga able to escape with the cheap win. This has been a very enjoyable feud to see develop throughout 1991.

[1997-03-23-WWF-Wrestlemania XIII] Bret Hart vs Steve Austin (I Quit)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
Wonderful match that kicks off in high gear with some great brawling and a chaotic atmosphere and never lets up. I think the best thing about this match like Tully vs. Magnum is that where the violence is off the charts, there is also a deep storyline progressed here that makes it more memorable overall. Everything from the commentary to the iconic image of Austin passing out is spot on. Probably up there with Warrior vs. Savage and Bret vs. Owen as my favorite WWF matches of all time. -
Had pretty high hopes for this coming off their 1994 match but was left disappointed. Storyline of the match was fine but the sloppiness was too much and it seemed like they had enough stuff and story for around 18 minutes and stretched this out to 30. A lot of rinse and repeating with Toyota making a comeback then giving right back up the advantage.

Sabu speaking is put over huge and the punch he gave to Alfonso looked good. His bump through the table was one of the best he ever executes and puts over he will stop at nothing to get at Taz.

Dudley Boyz are looking more big time with Gertner. Still not that big a fan of Sign Guy.

[1997-03-22-ECW-TV] Interview: Rick Rude / Interview: Shane Douglas
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
Rude in a sweater and mask is a striking image. He even gives a kiss to Rude as he finishes his promo. Styles still annoys me greatly. Douglas has a VHS in his hand and its of his back injury. -
I really like Childs analogy of playground basketball. This match was a blast that featured too many highspots to name. My favorite was the Santo dive with Silver King just missing getting to him before he dove. I also did think this continued the story of Casas vs. Santo in a fine fashion and more individuals were fleshed out. Silver King, Felino, and Dandy were all terrific.

[1997-03-17-WCW-Nitro] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Harlem Heat
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
Stuff breaks down and it was nice to see Hogan out with the group for the beatdown. Giant and Luger are able to clean house and stand with the Steiners and Harlem Heat in the ring. We get a flash and Sting repels down with a huge pop. Hogan is spooked and both Nitro and Raw had hot segments again on this night. -
[1997-03-17-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan and Dennis Rodman vignette / Wolfpac promo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1997
Hogan vs. Rodman saying they laid out Sting is not a terrible ploy to spin what happened and possibly to drum up some replay buys. Wolfpac's promo was not their best stuff. They ham up and sing Bad Boys and we get the Hennan reference. I meant to say this in the Uncensored thread but hennan kind of does annoy me sometimes during this period. His reference here was dated and at the main event when Sting was attacking the NWO he kept talking about Nitro. I understand he was pushing viewers for tomorrow night but he did seem like a shill and was downplaying the present moment. Tony eventually tells him that all he is thinking about is what going on right now which I'm sure Bobby views as him cutting him off but in that situation, I side with Tony. -
Something about Gene saying they tagged your wife was humorous to me. DDP gives a pretty heated promo vowing revenge. DDP says Savage was born to be a chalk outline. Savage responds in the crowd goading DDP to chase him through the crowd.

I'm here because I'm the King of the Ring - Stone Cold with another gem pre match remembering history. The match was fine but Sid was not on the level of the earlier match between these two. The finish was a chaotic scene with Austin and Undertaker coming down. Eventually we get another good finish where Taker slams the door on Bret and Sid climbs out for the win. Afterwards, we get the promo of the year so far with Bret Hart losing his shit and cussing up a storm. Sid comes out to break it up and that brings out the Taker which Bret gives a huge tope to. We end the show with Sid vs. Taker and Bret vs. Austin brawling it out. Watching all the show highlights in succession, I really liked the buildup to the Mania. Being a casual fan though and not knowing who was going to be in the championship match six days out, I can see how the show did as little a buyrate as it did.

Vince's interaction with shawn is really fascinating. I can't tell if he is playing up his character of is genuinely this infatuated with Shawn. Shawn does a lame promo as they scour the crowd for girls crying. He also invites himself to Wrestlemania.
