The 8/31/83 MACW match is worlds better than Starrcade and has great extra-curriculars.

(scratch scratch scratch) I wasn't recalling Cena's earliest days accurately, sorry.

1/1/96, The Raw Bowl.

And thank god they did some kind of building for it, because to this point there wasn't really a feud between these 8 guys. The Steiners ran off the Nasties and were in a holding pattern from November, Arn and Barry were feuding with Doom, we had only recently found out Sting and Flair were actually feuding, and Pillman was doing everyman stuff all over the card. The first Flair/Pillman match was a full year prior and mostly forgotten. Hell, Sid was barely a Horseman, working almost nothing but squashes and randomly reteaming with Spivey for one night.

The Jack Brickhouse segments on WCW Pro Chicago are almost devoid of information, but they're endearing as heck.

[2015-01-06-WWE-Main Event] Nikki Bella vs Paige
PhilTLL replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in January 2015
Really solid stuff. Paige could have used a stronger comeback, and she's not quite fiery enough persona-wise to sync with Nikki's outstanding heeling here IMO. Some of that is the crowd's fault, as I was expecting a bigger pop for the comeback--they certainly earned it. But minor quibbles. Her offense does a good job making up for it, although I'm not very fond of her finisher, which is of the "are you giving or taking this move?" persuasion. I actually liked the semi botched rollups--they felt desperate and real. Nikki and Brie's combo heeling is really sharp: Nikki: I think one more! Brie: I do too! Brie: Great job Nikki! Get her! (wild applause) Nikki: THANK YOU, Brie, thank you! -
Not essential (said a guy who has been at least trying to watch all 5 stupid-ass WCW shows from 1990-91), but take a look at listings if you have some and see what jumps out at you, because there's a bunch of good stuff. For example, one of the best-ever Techwood Drive studio matches was a Tully vs Barry match from Sunday Edition in May 1987.

That was (gulp, sigh) ten years ago. There's been plenty of less deranged booking since then.

Geez, listen to the range compression on those crowd mics. I can hear every echoing word from those 3 guys. Is it in the TV contract that Raw has to be 3 live hours?
-
It raised a smile from me too. Of course it was hammy, but that's wrestling's charm half the time. Ha, fair enough. I was drunk when I posted that and still couldn't find anything to like about it. I usually like hammy best in wrestling when it's not intentional.

In all its rambling glory! Still a riotous, fascinating, weirdly touching classic. And to top it off, she punctuates it with variations on "You paid your money, you got your ticket, now shut up and listen to what we have to say!" They should play that clip between every inductee at every ceremony. On a somewhat related note, it's odd but not surprising that quite a few of the male workers in these fairly-recent HOF crowds are still around, but literally none of the women.

The Jim Ross Is A Grouchy Hateful Vile Human Being thread
PhilTLL replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Of course he also made the Demott/Adrian Peterson child abuse comparison as well. At first I couldn't figure it out then I remembered what college he went to Like I have said before, if you argument in support of the situation has the phrase "these millennials" or "back in my day" then yeah not interested Hey now, the fellow OU alums I know aren't cool with Peterson's child abuse. I feel pretty safe in saying JR would pop off something about the wussification of America and political correctness even if he was a Texas fan. Because he's a cranky, hardened old fart. -
I stopped for about 5 minutes on the Universal HD replay of Raw and caught the Miz "Niagara" commercial segment. What an embarrassing, tin-eared piece of crap. I've seen better acting at children's theater and better writing on local TV. I hate to be hyperbolic, but I can't imagine anyone--adults, children, geniuses, idiots, bacteria--finding any value in it. Then I sit back down and HHH is saying a certain old foe's name as "Booger T," which is a little weird, and they both keep talking about WCW and the nWo and Eric Bischoff and even I, a sentimental old fuck for WCW, can't bring myself to care about this at all. HHH pretends to fire Booker, most of the crowd noise is coming from three guys sitting next to microphones...ugh.

Highlights from Meadowlands 1/11/91, as seen on WCW 1/12/91: - Nothing gets a top face and a local hero guest manager over like having them lose cleanly and then lie about it to the unknowing referee. Which is how Luger and Lawrence Taylor beat Big Cat and Paul E. in the over-the-top-rope football match. - I never knew the Flair/Sting title switch finished on a ref bump, a visual fall, and an unseen foot on the rope for Sting. The crowd is thrilled anyway. All the excitement of the Sting title reign is summed in this actual exchange between him and Nick Patrick from the post-match: "My foot was on the rope." "I didn't see your foot on the rope." "Aw, man."

The Mania match a few months ago was Taker and Trips vs Rock but Rock got movie bookings and couldn't put the time needed to do it That doesn't make any sense. Unless you meant Taker vs somebody and Trips vs Rock. Taker vs Sting and HHH vs Rock.

You can almost see Shane rolling his eyes and biting his lip.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to begrudge you your opinion. We're just coming from different perspectives on this. If I had actually seen the height of the territory days unfold I'd probably feel more deeply betrayed by Vince. But I am still pretty mad about WCW, ha. So in that sense, I kind of hate the people behind the AOL Time merger, I guess. Ted probably would have kept going with TV if somebody else was paying for the actual promotion, IIRC. Yes, WCW was awful and I don't think I was actually watching then, but dammit...

We could easily pick matches and feuds from last week, month, or year that demonstrate great, serious-feeling ring work and interviews. Likewise a bunch of goofy to outright dumb moments from now or the past. "That's not Junk Yard Dog, that's Stagger Lee!" The point is wrestling has long been both athletic and dumb.
-
Yep. They couldn't even limit themselves to theaters. It's not surprising that anyone wouldn't skip on a huge gate like that, but it sure has become a less interesting, more embarrassing-to-be-a-fan night of television.
-
Plus they're 100% kayfabe-free. Even after Montreal it took awhile for them to get comfortable with that "let's talk about match layouts and spot calling" mode. I'm a bit surprised they taped as much as they did.

Ricky Morton vs. Bobby Eaton, Worldwide 1-5-1991: This was really cooking as a 50/50 match before the Freebirds ran in for the shitty finish. Lots of terrific counter sequences and one of the best of their punch/receipt bits I've seen. At least there's an interesting post-match after the run-in, as the Birds hold Morton for Eaton to belt him, but he gets indignant and turns on them. Then after the ol' back-to-back turnaround, they tease the handshake, but Eaton decks him because at the end of the day, fuck Ricky Morton.

Good freaking question. Short-sighted bastards.

[1990-09-22-NWA-Pro] Ric Flair & Arn Anderson vs Brian Pillman & Tom Zenk
PhilTLL replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
He barely did, working tags for a huge chunk of the year. Even his high-profile singles matches were mostly non-title. Orndorff, Luger, Scott Steiner, etc. He does have a three-match series against Terry Taylor in November that's on the set.
