[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Er... I think you have them confused with each other. D'oh! I thought the smaller fellow with the shaved head was Hash - who I initially thought was Mutoh, actually, since that's pretty much how he looks these days. :-( I'm just confused about 90's NJPW, obviously. It doesn't stop the match from being great though! This set will be a good exposure for me.- 27 replies

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I was just thinking that last night when I watched this segment. He's considered this great expert. I am wondering if it's just something that happened because ROH decided to keep giving him shoots? Or is it a case - kind of like Al Snow - of a guy who understands the concept but really just lacked the charisma or athletic ability to be a superstar? He knew how to get people to like him, that's for sure. It's just that his gimmick doesn't date well. I agree that it's good on Tom for getting Beulah. Makes me smile.- 19 replies

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I have never understood the appeal of Raven. I guess his gimmick was pretty different, but give me a Johnny B Badd - a guy who can wrestle and who makes me smile. Raven is a character that shows you all he has to show in about 30 seconds. On the other side, I am inordinately fond of Beulah. She was not the hottest. She was never the best actress. But she was into her job, and it takes about 30 seconds to fall in love for life. Tommy's run in us well done, especially the bit with the stopsign and pie. But Jesus, did that guy ever know any move besides piledriver or DDT? Talk about a guy who built a career by sheer force of will.- 19 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Vader vs Antonio Inoki
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Been meaning to watch this one forever, and it does not disappoint. I have to make a quick comment about the awesomeness that is Inoki's hair at the end of the match. I can't believe that suplex! Inoki looked legit dead. I agree with most things said in this thread. I will say that Vader is one of those guys who grows more on me every viewing. He just can do so much for a superheavyweight. What other 400 pounder bumped like he did? Jerry Blackwell, maybe? And there's no point in mentioning the moonsault is there? He's just so much fun to watch, and he ought to be boring.- 24 replies

Gorgeous kicks. Awesome nasty armwork. The last minute is some crazy intensity. I haven't seen a lot of UWFi, but I love the heck out of shoot style. Yamasaki reminds me a bit of 2007 Morishima here, and that's a compliment. He's a big guy who can move well but isn't scared to remind us he's the big dude. I love his chop or punch when Hash throws two kicks in a row. First match on the disc that I have really enjoyed.- 27 replies

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Count me another vote for hating the dead crowd. Was this one if those tennis crowds, only responding to big moves? Wrestle this match on a TNA ppv, and you'll see a much diff atmosphere. Or think about Pillman/Liger in Nitro to see the difference in a good but not great match that has an interested crowd. Tough to make it through this one, though the movez themselves were good enough. As the Mutoh match is beginning, it's amazing how much louder the crowd is.- 18 replies

The more post 80s Flair I watch over the years, the less I love him ( with exceptions, like 1992). But even if he's a bit dull at times, no one can fault his willingness to bump for the other guys. And in a case like this one, his usually comic overselling is a benefit because it makes Hogan seem more impactful. Hogan does seem to be moving slowly, and the crowd that granted him cricket chirps and boos on his entrance is not a crowd going to genuinely chant his name later unless he really gets rolling. There just wasn't much to draw me into this match, though Arn's appearance at the end injected some life. I just thought it all felt very paint by numbers.

Not very funny, though I did like Huckster's "At my age these feet don't leave the ground." True true.

The football gimmick got really old fast, and the match was kind of a mess. I did enjoy some bits, though. Owen getting replaced and squashed by a very very large Yoko. The Gunns tagging in OwenYoko. (hehe. YokoOwen) Billy's hot tag that included Cornette's nasty bump. King drawing out the first pinfall like he was Madden. Fun enough, though not something I'm in a rush to see again. Razor didn't have much to do - were they protecting him for some reason?

Got my discs today - looking forward to starting viewing tomorrow morning.

Watching Bulldogs v Rougeaus from Summerslam '88. It's a decent match with some nice back and forth - I am enjoying it. I am confused a bit, though. The crowd seems to pop for the Bulldogs, so they must be the Faces. But the way they work, especially in the early minutes, is very much as bully heels working over the FIP. Am I just projecting what I know about these guys into my interpretation of their work? Or am I reading it right, that they work as assholes while still being the good guys? I guess the same could often be said about Hogan and whipping people with his belt. Also, DK literally stood up on his neck at one point. It looked scary.

That LVE video is tragic - they at least usually PRETEND to wrestle as match on those things. She might as well be naked. I might buy it, then. No, probably not. Anyway, can I just say how much I enjoyed the commentary team of Punk and Stanford (sp?) on Superstars this week? On the main event, it was like Heenan and Monsoon. Beautiful old school match calling, while Punk constantly interjects with sarcasms and jokes. The match was really good but made better by the voiceover.

I know. I was just teasing. It's great fun. How free-flowing are the convos? Do you have an outline but then let things go where they go?

More NMB fun: JHawk Dec 15 2006, 04:26 PM: DylanWaco responded with a comment about Punk's size being a hindrance. Just like the debates about Danielson. -
Starting the podcasts from the beginning, with the Death of WCW stuff. Man, it makes me want to buy the discs. Will, I am on to you - this podcast is nothing but an kickass, informative infomercial for your comps.

While I wait for my discs. . . In January 1996, I was in my last semester of college in Texas. I was not remotely interested in wrestling. If it were even on my radar then, I would have considered myself way too smart for it. (I know this fact to be true because in the late 90's it was on my radar, as it was on everyone's -- and I considered myself too smart for it.) It's a great tragedy that I missed all of it as it happened. But even better now because I get to watch it all in one place, and with no commercials. There's so much on this list I have never seen or only seen once. On the first disc alone, I would say over 75% of the material is new to me. It's possible that the only stuff I have seen is the Nitro matches. No point, really, aside from the fact that I am looking forward to it. Also that it's late, and I should have been in bed 2 hours ago.

I confess to enjoying some of the old Amos n Andy radio shows now and then, but this cartoon is some seriously offensive shit right here: "The Rasslin' Match"

As I suspected. Therefore, not a story.

There's a massive WTF for ya. I don't know the procedure. Is the idea that the firemen on the scene see what might be arson and then call in the specialists? Or is a specialist always called in when a business burns down, and Dave is making news out of it? Also, because I don't know the difference between work and shoot: Maybe she went crazy again? Someone killed her damn spider, and now she has to lash out?

Sweet - that's what I thought, thanks. Now I can go restart the match and feel less confused. Too bad so much lucha is such horrible VQ.
