Thx, shoe. I figured it was something like that - maybe back on Florida or something.

Liz seems to have redone her hair back to sandy blonde. I generally am okay with Hogan, but not during this period. His hulk up feels totally inappropriate, as Flair is not a monster. I enjoyed the ending with Arn and Hart teaming to steal the shoe, and I took sadistic glee in Hart beating on a downed Hogan at ringside. Decent enough match. Flair's schtick may be tired by 96, but he feels positively fresh next to Hulk's. Plus he's always consistent in his willingness to bump and sell - I can't stress that point enough because it sets apart from almost every other main eventer aside perhaps from Foley.

[1996-01-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Dusty Wolfe
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Fantastic beatdown. I love Finlay's reason for hating Regal - that he represents 400 years of British rule. And how they all don't know who he is, but he calls himself Fit Finlay. Tony then proceeds to mention his name "Dave Finlay". Oops. Good stuff. Regal can do no wrong.- 13 replies

One of the things I love about all japan is the sense that at any moment someone will unleash hell. We have it here as Kawada starts to make a comeback until Hansen lariatoooooooooos him dead. Fantastic opening to ajpw in the set.

I love how Giant just tosses Hogan aside after the backbreaker. Of course being Hogan, he has to come back with a slam. He can never just let the opponent get a good spot. Then at the end, Flair wins but it's Hogan who keeps the ring. Does Hogan signal Pillman to come to him so he can grab Pillman's hair? Fun match clip, anyway. Amazing how Liz looks like Sunny here - blonde and same kind of short boob-dress. For a second at first, I thought it WAS Sunny.

[1996-01-23-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXII] Brian Pillman vs Eddy Guerrero
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
You're saying Heenan was legit freaked out? Nice, I was chalking it up to getting the angle over. Pillman and Eddy work well together. I would like to see them go 20 min. Watching this set really reminds me of how much death there's been in rasslin. It somethimes feels as if Almost every segment has someone dead or crippled in it. I know 96 was fifteen years ago, but it feels like yesterday to me.- 13 replies

Luger's so thoughtful. He doesn't want to hurt them, and besides he's all booked up with other teams. LOL Sting is terrible again on the mic. And what the hell was he wearing?! Love the annual beatings quota.

Awesome stuff. The matches we have seen so far fro ECW on this set have been okay to bad. But the character segments would have kept me watching to see what craziness would happen next. I feel like Shane almost shoot laughed at the end when Dreamer was in his face, and then he said "I'll take you to that." Surely he meant "hold" not take?

What a cartoon ending, with the torch and the breathing fire. No wonder Steamboat retired soon after. ;-) I really appreciate Arn's intensity -- his facial expressions and selling and aiming for hurt limbs all point towards the fact this this is a man fully aware of what's going on in the ring and what will deliver the best match. You're right that it isn't much of a match, but he always makes even the throwaway stuff worth watching. Great idea for a thread. I've been toying with starting a "What are You Watching" topic since the Matches section is gone. WCW is as good a way to begin as any. Ricky Steamboat vs. Arn Anderson, WCW Main Event 8/21/94 (9:45) Arn and Ricky are not getting along as the match begins. They start with some solid chain wrestling that eventually ends up on the mat with Ricky working over the arm and shoulder. It's interesting to watch this match and the Dustin one back to back to compare the styles Arn works. The Dustin match is a brawl, which this match has a much more technical feel. The pace really picks up until Arn throws a spinebuster which causes both of them to crash. Arn uses his size and power to dominate for quite a bit, even cheating a little by holding onto the ropes [funny how tapping repeatedly didn't make for a submission in those days]. There's a great camera angle of Steamboat coming off the corner for a cross-body -- from the camera's view, it looks like he's coming from a mile away on the other side of the ring. Arn finally gets the pin with a little help from Meng and Col Parker. Quick TV match that's nothing special and probably won't prompt a second viewing for awhile. But it's a demonstration of what can be done when you put two masters in the ring. They know what they're doing better than almost anyone, and it's a joy to watch. Johnny B.Badd vs. Dean Malenko, WCW Pro 12/23/95 (approx 8:00) This match is for the Badd's TV Title on what I am guessing is the C-show. Mero is accompanied by Kimberly, who of course he won at WW3 and who is now his "official manager". I think this is an interesting matchup because Mero shows he can keep up with Dean. But he also provides that fun-to-watch factor so lacking in Dean's matches (when they're not with a charismatic worker like a Mero or an Eddy). That said, I feel this one loses steam about 5 min in. They start off so strongly, and then apart from a spot or two really begin to mail it in. Malenko gets DQ'd for a pretty screwy reason. The best bit about the second half of the match is that Kimberly's miniskirt-clad arse is on screen pretty much the whole time. Also, Dusty spouting a lot of nonsense on commentary = always fun.

Finished disc 2. Some good rasslin, particularly the discovery [by me] of Ohtani/Samurai. But the disc really belongs to the segments and interviews. So much great stuff on this one, from the Lawler/Gilbert exchange to the Savage & Flair "satellite" interview. Vader murdering everyone and Goldust licking Terri's tongue will not quickly be forgotten, either. I mentioned before in one of the matches, but the variety on this set in the first month alone is astonishing (and we're not even done with Jan yet after two discs - I see there's Clash and AJPW yet to come, as well as another Monday Night and more USWA). This set makes me happy, and I have much joy in the prospects of watching it and future years.

[1996-01-22-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Harlem Heat

I've never been the biggest Booker T fan (I think the King Booker stuff prejudiced me against him). But he's motivated here, and I agree with Loss that the kick was gorgeous.- 11 replies

What's the history with Woman to which they refer? I agree she gets a crappy intro, but she looks amazing and slaps the crap out of Flair.

Superb segment. I love the confrontation with Monsoon and the idea that Vader's so crazy even Cornette can't control him. I do agree he looked very overweight here.

[1996-01-22-AJW-Champion Legend] Manami Toyota vs Yumiko Hotta
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Jesus, that's a lot of streamers! Manami is the type of wrestler who will put on interesting matches with just about anyone. But I have to agree that her screaming gets to me these days. It's stuff like screaming Toyotas that makes people not want to watch joshi. And I don't want to watch it right now. Maybe I will come back to it. We'll see.- 11 replies

[1996-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Bret Hart vs The Undertaker
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Meh. Nash's flipping the bird is indeed awesome, as is Paul Bearer reacting to the fact that Taker can't win the belt. What's with Taker's mask, anyway?- 13 replies

Austin also points with his fingers in a way that suggests his flipping off everyone in the near future. It's a pretty dull rumble ending until the last moments. I liked Shawn v Marty. Kane and Davey Boy have excellent finishes, and I love how they realize Shawn would not be believable eliminating Nash unless he pearl harbor's him. Good finish. Loss mentions the crowd response. I was just thinking how tired I was of Shawn's poor beat up underdog near eliminations. But even I was excited by the end. There might be something to this Michaels kid. Think he'll go far? I know I am predisposed because I like Nash, but the self-indulgent hi-five bit at the end was kind of cool. Whereas the striptease sequence was not cool.

Just a sniglet of a match. Hall actually looks quite motivated here, in the few seconds we get. Funny how Vince keeps calling Marlena "that woman", and I can't decide if Dustin's tongue-touch with her is high five or gagworthy. I continue to like Goldust more by the day. I'm really curious to get to the Piper at Mania stuff because I recall hating it when first seeing XII a few years back.

[1996-01-21-NJPW-New Year Special] Shinjiro Otani vs El Samurai
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The variety on this set so far has been astounding. Now we have what arguably should be a high-flyers juniors match, and yet the bulk if it is submission matwork. What high flying they do use is always put to great effect, such as Ohtani throwing a missile dripkick and then going for a submission on the joint he kicked. I haven't read all the text above me yet, but this is clearly a match that evokes strong opinion. Having never seen it before now, I can safely say I loved it. Ohtani's underdog sucked me in completely, and I wanted him to win do badly. When he freaked out after not getting the three with his suplex, I felt for him. I am a sucker for battlarts-esque submission mat wrestling, and we get that here in spades. Samurai will even go for an armbar instead if a pin after hitting a devastating top rope move. It all makes me smile and is easily my favorite match so far on the set. And now to read everyone else's thoughts. But first, two comments more: 1. Something about Liger hanging out in mask and track suit feels so wrong and yet so right. 2. Who's the older frowning man in the gray sportcoat? EDIT: Okay, now I realize this is a "big match" in njpw history. But it was new to me, and I had a great time with it. I had no trouble buying the Ohtani is the one trying desperately to get over, as he always seems to get the worst of it. One other thought: Did I miss O getting his nose cleaned up, or is there a clip somewhere in the match?- 23 replies

[1996-01-20-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Ric Flair & Randy Savage
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Awesome. Savage's nonsense is like poetry, talking about being there with friends or acquaintences and telling Flair to warm up the girls so he can seal the deal. Thinking back to the Hogan-Sting-Savage abortion of an interview on that week's Nitro: This is how you do a modern interview (talking about sex and orgies and fucking Liz!!!??) while using an old school delivery.- 9 replies

[1996-01-20-USWA-TV] PG-13 vs Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong
Kronos replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Yup, I am continuing to love every bit of the Memphis on this set. This is the best match yet, with great selling of the leg injury. I know Resident Evil was talking about how Stevie R supposedly came out of that Sabu match looking tough, but this is how you sell toughness. JC Ice has his leg worked for almost 15 min, and all he has to do is tap out at the end. But he doesn't because he's a wiry little bastard who will not give up even in nasty pain. Great run in brawl. All these guys (esp Gilbert and the PG13 boys) remind me of Todd from Beavis & Butthead.
