[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Vader vs Antonio Inoki
El-P replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This match also demonstrate how whiny the WWF workers were at the time. I believe both Taker and Shawn complained about Vader's stiffness, and it really ampered his aura there, while a 60 year old Inoki allows Vader to just kill him. And Vader was clearly not in good shape here, fat, in need of an operation I believe. Amazing match, what a Dome show match should be, it had no right to be that great. Compare that to the ass-half matches Vader had in WWF with Shawn and Taker in the months to come. Well... And it's not even a thing about US wrestling, as Vader worked über stiff with Sting and Dustin Rhodes in WCW (I'm not mentionning Cactus Jack because that crossed the line between stiff and stupid). Even the Bulldog allowed him to work his style there.- 24 replies

Ahmed was over like crazy. He had the look, the intensity. An Ultimate Warrior 2.0. He could have become big. Well that's what he became, as seen in his short WCW stint later, but that's not what I meant.

Bubba was ridiculously misused in WCW at this point, but he didn't fit the nWo. Rotunda was done. Yeah Bagwell and Nirton fit the mold, and it did wonders for Bagwell. Vincent was more than useless, I can't believe they actually paid this guy. And then in 98 you had Brian Adams, Horace Hogan, Stevie Ray... Guys like Henning or Scott Steiner didn't need the nWo to be strong heels.

I think it was Pierre actually. Yeah, it's sad I remember this. Luger wasn't on Superstar after his face turn, so yeah it was quite an event, but soon after, Luger was on TV every week squashing jobbers.

Getting Nash away from TNA is a favor to them more than aything else, really.

[1996-08-24-ECW-Natural Born Killaz] Rob Van Dam vs Doug Furnas
El-P replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Furnas throws RVD around like a bitch, which is probably why this is one of RVD's most enjoyable match. Kroffat & Furnas should have gone to WCW at this point, that would have been fun.- 10 replies

[1996-10-20-WWF-Buried Alive] The Undertaker vs Mankind (Buried Alive)
El-P replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Always thought the Buried Alive matches were a terrible idea. And at this point, Taker vs Mankind was getting old. Not to mention the finish sucked with the introduction of Terry Gordy as the Executionner (a gimmick that screams "jobber" as soon as you see a guy in random black attire with a random mask). What was the point of bringing Gordy anyway ?- 11 replies

Yeah. Things really degenerated at the end of the year, leading to Sold Out where it came apparent that the nWo had plenty of non-stars, JTTS wrestlers in it. It would only get worse later of course. Syxx was the logical addition to the "band". And Waltman was excellent in the role.

I know it was stupid, but as a promo it's awesome. Like I said, I would have loved a full fledge Ross heel turn. But yeah, it was an awesome pro-nWo promo, with the cherry on the cake being the fake-Razor. To watch the real thing, change the channel, that's where the Big Boys Play.

Whaou. For once I agree with Dan on joshi. Oz was never more fun that in 96, and I loved the Amano angle.

[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Genichiro Tenryu vs Great Muta
El-P replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Awesome match in term of pure fun and aura. I always loved The Great Muta gimmick, I guess I have terrible taste in wrestling. But yeah, it worked so well because it was only in small dose.- 11 replies

Jarrett didn't stay a face for long though, as he quickly transitionned into the sneaky 5th member of the 4 Horsemen, trying to take Mongo's spot and wife, which was a fun program. But yeah, Jarrett first coming up as a *face* after years of chickenshit heel in WWF and playing the "I'm wrestling tradition" card was a bomb.

[1996-09-22-WWF-Mind Games] Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith vs Smoking Gunns
El-P replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
They missed a huge opportunity with Sunny vs Cornette. It could have been a golden feud with awesome promos and angles. I was baffled they decided to do nothing with Sunny at this point. What a wasted potential.- 7 replies

[1996-09-30-WWF-Raw] Vader & Jim Cornette vs Shawn Michaels & Jose Lothario
El-P replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
Lothario was an albatros for Shawn. I wasn't a fan of this incarnation of babyface champ Shawn Michaels anyway, but having this old guy nobody knew (in the WWF audience) by his side made him even more uncool. Vader was doomed by the shitty SummerSlam booking. -
This is WWF getting desperate while WCW was just kicking their asses with the angle of the decade. How could they thought it would get over ? I did like Ross pseudo heel turn though. Heel Ross would have been a blast. I'm very critical of what Ross became later, but I really loved his work during this time preceding the Attitude Era.

This was so stupid. Meanwhile, Jeff Jarrett was having the best run of his life in WCW having great matchex with Benoit and Malenko, and tons of fun interaction with the Horsemen. Yeah, I was a fan of the Jarrett/Mongo/Debra triangle.

It's one of the rare Gangstas segment I actualy enjoyed. Probably beacause more than half the participants were the FBI.

Hikari Fukuoka still had the best finisher ever. Moonsault footstomp. Just amazingly brutal. Manami Toyota was never even the best wrestler in her own company. And I like Manami.
