Greatest performances in ad-hoc last-minute-change situations
rzombie1988 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
Baba and Hansen are one of my favorite teams ever. Their whole run in the Tag League was just fun pro wrestling. -
Everyone in this thread should see the WWF segment from when Randy Savage first started with him being the hottest free agent. They had Savage and a bunch of managers in a room all pleading their case on why he should sign with them. Jimmy Hart went with the direction of not spending a ton of money but saving it. Blassie talked about how Macho can live it up and be rich. It was a really cool segment and instantly put Savage over, plus gave us some cool insight on the world of managers. There is also another really good segment that everyone should see. It happened around 1992/1993 with a behind the scenes look at Jimmy Hart on a Coliseum video. They showed him booking travel plans for his crew, helping them find their gear and keeping the Nasty Boys out of trouble. They should have done more of those segments. I never had a problem with wrestlers getting traded from one manager to another. I always just thought of it as a manager in sports trading one of his players to another team for some funds or another player. Pat Patterson refusing to work for Albano was a really cool angle that I'm glad was brought up. I really liked the comment about everyone in the WWE having open contracts for shows with the GM's setting things up if they don't set something up themselves. They should explain that on TV sometime. I'm really glad Paul E is back and giving us some tastes of having manager's again. He is the best non-wrestler in the world and is definitely up for the GOAT status for managers. I wish we would have more of them though and I do hope he crosses paths with Zeb sometime. I also really want to see a face manager again. They are rare but they could grab a vet, who they already have signed, put him out there and have him talk for his guy along with taking an odd shot or two and maybe even doing a match for an angle. Managers are just great. They can: - Do any storyline or angle - Be involved in multiple things at one time - Be a priceless tool for getting over wrestlers - Have matches provided their health is okay - Do commentary! At best, manager's like Jimmy Hart were even the top star's in their territory for a period of time.

I reviewed Summerslam with pics and gifs here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/ww...and-review.html Overall thoughts: Great show with many good matches. Check this out, especially Brock vs Punk! Some shots from the show:

Not sure, but it's not looking good. Last night they had on all repeats. Hoping for new episodes next Monday.

Favorite Wrestling Video Games

No Mercy will always be #1. It was the ultimate multi-player wrestling game. My cousins and I spent hours winning the belts off of each other and creating total mayhem. I had two memorable No Mercy moments: - My cousin and I formed a team and were beating his annoying neighbor soundly in a handicap match. We were being total jerks and just hitting him with everything for over 30 minutes straight without him getting anything in. We could have pinned him anytime we wanted. Near the end of the match, I tried for some move and he somehow reversed it into a cradle to win it. We got owned, but I even had to give him credit for that. - I finally had Farooq and Bradshaw almost finished in the terribly hard No-DQ handicap match in the parking lot that had to be completed in No Mercy. This was legit super hard and usually resulted in me getting my butt kicked 11 times out of 10. Anyway, I finally had them this time as I stuck to cheap mid-section kicks and irishwhipping them very far distances, which spread them far away. I was getting close to the win and one of my cousins trips over the cord to the N64. The game immediately shut off and all of my progress was lost. I also really enjoyed WCW/NWO world tour due to the insane amount of wrestlers on it. I had tons of fun with The Claw, Gran Naniwa. I also got a kick out of winning belts. I have fond memories of Wrestlefest, but I sucked at it. The last WWE game I really loved was Here Comes the Pain. Brock was a beast in it and I really loved the different area's you could fight in. After HCTP, I played some but never got into them. I really hated the Smackdown vs Raw series and I just have no interest any more. I also refuse to buy a PS3 until the PS4 comes out. -
Is NJPW the best puro product currently?

I reviewed the G1 Finals here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...y-9-finals.html Overall thoughts - This was a great night of wrestling. There were multiple good matches and a good crowd. I was very disappointed by Tanahashi/Shibata but hopefully they will meet again. As a whole, the tournament has been pretty great but there were clearly "big show" days and "house show" days. Still, we got the amazing Shibata/Ishii spectacle and the fabulous Tanahashi/Ishii battle. This was a great G1 and quite possibly the best G1 yet. Some shots from the show: -

I reviewed Day 8 of the NJPW G1 Climax 2013 here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...and-review.html Overall thoughts: There was sadly more bad than good on this show. The main was good and should be seen and I liked Ishii's match, but Ibushi was awful and the usual suspects weren't much better in the bad match department. The crowd wasn't totally there until the end though and I didn't like NJPW leaving Shibata totally off the card due to Goto's injury. Some shots from the show: -

I reviewed Day 7 of the G1 Climax here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...and-review.html Overall thoughts: This was one of the lesser days of the G1. There were only two matches I liked here and I just was not into this one at all. This one also had a house show type of feel to it. Some shots from the show: -

I reviewed Day 6 of the G1 Climax here(Yeah, I know, I'm a few days behind): http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...esults-and.html Overall thoughts: Good show overall with Ishii/Davey being the highlight. Okada/Shibata and Goto/Tanahashi were disappointing though. Some shots from the show: -
You will watch TWO Tug Taylor matches and LIKE IT. I love Tug actually. He's no superworker but he takes some good bumps and is fun as a low-rent cousin of Typhoon. I'd love to get a Tug Taylor discussion going, but I and I don't think many others would have alot to say. The Legends thing is all about how you look at it. With their format, you get more matches, but they are clipped up. I'd honestly rather get the clips as atleast I can feel I saw a match even if I only saw half of it. I think we wouldn't see a lot of the matches we saw without the format.

Why couldn't something like the GWF work today? Put in on ESPN Classic or something, put it in the Philadelphia area where most indy workers are located anyway, stick with taped shows and keep the budget low with workers on a per show deal. It would have to get better ratings than alot of the b and c sports channels shows and it really should be ALOT cheaper to produce than other programming.

There's at least 120 DVD's out there at minimum. I have 94 myself. The thing to keep in mind though is that this show was on everyday and the period most people remember was 1991, which is very well covered. Here's the list of available shows: GWF List There's also: Atleast 38 episodes of Supercard Legends 56+ episodes of Supercard 16 episodes of Major League Wrestling 23 episodes of Main Event TV Maybe after the G1 is over I can start going through the shows and figure out what's new and what's not.
-
Were these not already out there or something? I don't think a lot of these are out there.
-
I have all of it so far and since I don't have DVR, it is a giant pain.

There's a 44 disc set of Continental/South Eastern. It's mostly from 85-on with a little bit from 1984. Linden Walker is probably the man to contact on Continental stuff: http://www.lindenwalker.com/Page_3.html Before that, there's a few discs from 1980 or 1981 but that's about it. The main stars of Continental were Bob Armstrong, Austin Idol, Mr. Olympia and The Stud Stable/Fullers with Robert Fuller, Ron Fuller and Jimmy Golden. Add in Wendell Cooley as well. Moving down the card, there was a ton of stuff with Johnny Rich and the other Armstrong brothers, The Nightmares, Adrian Street, Lord Humongous, Brickhouse Brown and others. I reviewed some Continental/South Eastern here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/so...-wrestling.html - This may have the best promo's of any show I've ever seen and is from December 1984 right before the switch to Continental http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/co...stling-vol.html - One of the first shows of The Continental Era What I really like about Continental is that it has a down home feel. Next to Memphis, it was one of the last shows to really stick to territorial style TV. Everyone comes across as pretty real. Bob Armstrong is like the father you wish you had and The Fuller's are like the nasty neighbors that constantly kick sand in your face. If you don't like Bob or The Fuller's though, this promotion isn't for you. For the most part, it's them and then there's everyone else. I cannot believe though that anyone could possibly hate Bob Armstrong. He is really one of the last great faces. The angles as KrisZ mentioned are all pretty good with DWB/Pritchard being must see. My favorite out of what I watched was with The Bullet vs Ron Fuller. Fuller said he was finally going to unmask the Bullet to get him exposed and fired as Bob Armstrong and he does. HOWEVER, Gordon Solie tells the camera's to cut right when he loses the mask, so nobody sees him unmasked, therefore, The Bullet stays in Continental. The Fuller's flip out as Gordon revels in it. Continental/Southeastern got little coverage mostly because of their own doing. IIRC, they didn't let magazines/photographers in so few talked about them. It was also Southern and they didn't have a major TV deal.

I reviewed Day 3 of the G1 Climax 2013 here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...esults-and.html Overall thoughts: Well what can you say. This was a great show and literally everything was good here. NJPW booked this really well as they put the stuff that wouldn't be so good out first while saving the good stuff for top half. However, the stuff that wasn't supposed to be that good was and therefore made for a great card. Everyone really performed well and the Shibata/Ishii match is a MOTYC and is guranteed at worst a share for my MOTY. Definitely see this show as it's one of NJPW's best. Some shots from the show: -

I reviewed Day 3 of the G1 Climax here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/nj...esults-and.html Overall thoughts: The good and bad stuff here was about equal. Goto/Kojima, Smith/Tana, Naito/Nagata were all good but the Benjamin, Tenzan and Shibata matches were disappointing. I do recommend checking out the three I mentioned though as they were good and were worth the time. Stay away from the first two or three though. Some shots from the show:
