Loss

Recommended Posts

I haven't watched all the Maritimes footage I have from that year and I can already hear Will telling me "this isn't making the cut" but if Heel Joey Mags working unknown Southern promotion made the cut I figure it's worth pimping this:

International Champion Rip Rogers vs. Big Stephen Pettipas

It's on the Maritimes footage I have, which I think Will has. Good match with two of the most well regarded workers from the history of that territory (If talkshoe didn't lose it, both Andrew Lacelle and Dave Musgrave, heavily pimped both guys on the Maritimes show we just did). Only problem is I'm not sure if there is a date available. Musgrave might have it somewhere.

I would obviously second this match. Rogers as heel champion was a great thing and although this is a couple years after Petitpas wrecked his knee, Rip makes him look really good in this match. Plus, there is an appearance by a teenaged Kurrgan.

Rockers vs. Powers of Pain from 1/15/90 at MSG is a nice big/small tag formula match.

Also, 1990 is pretty much the end of the Midnight Express, so their matches vs. the RnR Express at WrestleWat, Pillman and Zenk at Capitol Combat as well as the Southern Boys Bash match are nice representatives.

Flair's year should be interesting to track as well as you get the early stuff with the turn on Sting---Luger---loss to Sting----phase down----side feud with Doom----Black Scorpion.

Was looking at Paul's comment on the MX's last year, and thought I'd toss up what's generally available of their stuff that year and see if anyone had some recommendations of what should be keepers. So I grabbed the old CMPuck list and was going to pull from it. Instead...

I think I'll just toss up the list here and see if people want to make quick runs through it to recommend Will & Loss focus in on any specific matches as being worth a look / consideration / keepers.

There's tons of stuff here as Punk included promos similar to how Will and Loss are. But there's stuff that folks might not have in the front of their brains but when seeing it might remember it being good and worth a look. For example:

2. Arn Anderson vs Buzz Sawyer Power Hour 1/19/1990 12:19

I'm sure I watched it, but don't have any memory. Someone might recall it as being worth a look. It certainly is an interesting match up, and if Buzz was interested, might have been good.

Times aren't always a lock for bell-to-bell match time, but do give an indication whether it was a total squash or something more.

No doubt a chunk of the January TV was actually taped in 1989. If stuff is a keeper, we can always take a look. An example would be the first one: that's the actual Match Date, not the TV date. Since it's a title change, Punk was able to use the real date. With other tapings... well... we all know how that goes.

Anyway, here goes. Lots of interesting stuff on here, and no doubt there were other good matches that didn't make the cut for him.

01/30/90 is from the IWGP Jr #1 Contender's League (the juniors tourney for the year). It's a league match, but essentially the "final" as the last match of the league, the two at the top of the board in terms of points, and the winner would get the shot at Sano. Original TV was JIP, but the whole thing should have aired on NJ Classics when they got to 1990.

Owen was back in July, but didn't have a TV match with Liger. He did have one with Mutoh. There may be a handheld, but the Liger handheld I remember from the year getting pimped was Liger-Hase.

They had a match in 1991 in the League that got a lot of snowflakes. Perhaps that one is being mixed up as being in 1990 as well.

Thanks. I had them having a match on 02/24 also, but I'm not sure where I got that from. I looked back at the Classics list and it's not there.

Different question for anyone who has seen the USWA title tournament: There are way too many matches on that show that look good on paper, far too many to include. What would you classify as the essential matches? If someone could at least put them into tiers (1st tier being musts, 2nd being strongly recommended, 3rd being put on if you have room), that would also be helpful. Thanks.

Yeah i'll second the love for that one, really good, easily the best between them.

Didn't know they had a 1990 match, gonna have to track that one down, I liked their matches in the 80's too as they always worked well together.

For those of you who like Memphis, this will be your set. I've managed to fill the gaps of the 1990 season set floating around, *and* score the entire USWA Texas season to wade through, *and* get a good chunk of USWA Challenge. There will be quite a bit of footage that has never gotten much play. Same for lucha except for the most hardcore of hardcore fans. Plus, because wrestling was in a state of flux between the indies and the territories, there are quite a few small territories that had TV that will have a little representation. I'm really excited with how this is coming together. From a wrestling perspective, I don't think it will be the *best* set, but overall, it may end up as the most fun set.

My guess is that's the air date for 01/30/90. They got all screwed around on that opening series. 1/30 aired after 1/31. The Tokyo Dome had a 90 minute special, then I think other matches aired. It's a little hard that year to piece together air dates.

There is no 2/24 match that I'm aware of. NJ didn't have a series between 1/31 and the next one starting on 3/2. Just the 2/10 Dome in between.

Owen didn't come back until Jun/Jul. Looking at the JWJ...

There's a Pegasus-Owen on the 6/26 Sumo Hall card that didn't air on TV originally, but you have from Local.

You have the Bam Bam & Owen vs Doc & Pegasus on the list from 6/30.

7/3 Owen vs Kosh is a handheld you have.

7/5 is Mutoh-Owen, which aired on TV.

That's it for Owen on TV in 1990, other than matches back in January. Don't see a Liger match in Jun-Jul.

Some things I've found online that look intriguing:

Jerry Lawler vs Eddie Gilbert - barbed wire match

USWA TEXAS 10/90 - 11/90 PT #3

Terry Funk vs Dick Murdoch

Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk

Jerry Lawler vs Austin Idol

USWA TEXAS 10/90 - 11/90 PT #2 (#4324)

Chris Adams vs Steve Austin - barbed wire match

USWA TEXAS 4/90 - 9/90 PT #2

All of that will go on for sure. Let me just say sorting out the USWA Texas/Memphis stuff is the biggest challenge that will see the biggest payoff. You guys will be really excited by the stuff that ends up making the final cut that hasn't seen the light of day before.

New footage is always a bonus in my book. I've been going through Lynch's 2600+ page PDF list the last few days, and there is a ton of stuff on there that looks amazing. I've mentioned it previously, but if you guys need help sorting through lists or finding lists or even sources for footage, I'm just a PM away :)

Also, jdw has touched on this before, but this is really the narrative I want to capture with the 1990 Yearbook -- out with the old, in with the new.

The WWF was trying to phase out Hogan and put Warrior on top. WCW was trying to phase out Flair and put Sting and Luger on top. The Steiners surpassed the Road Warriors as stars. In Japan, Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Muto, Chono and Hashimoto were creeping closer to the top. In some of those cases, the goal was met and led to some prosperous times and in others ... not quite. Still, it's interesting to look at this yearbook in that context.

With this theme in mind, the Saito-Zbyszko AWA title changes are hopefully going on this set. Marking the end of one of the largest US Promotions between 1960 - 90 seems appropriate, and having at least one of those bouts on the set makes sense.

(Either that, or the Iron man Survivor Battleroyal from the Team Challenge series, which was hideous but possibly the last match the AWA ever ran for TV. Race vs. Zbyszko for the AWA title could work ,too.)

I don't think you need more than 1 AWA match to make the point that the promotion died in 1990, but it's a relevant point that needs highlighting.

Absolutely. The plan is to put both title changes and Zbyszko/Race. How is Larry/Nikita as a match?

I was actually going to reach out to you soon because we want to represent the Team Challenge Series somehow, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it, so I was going to ask you what singular clip would capture it well.

Is there an interview you could point me to that sums up how embarrassing Eric Bischoff was as an AWA announcer? He also had gray hair at this point, right?

I attended the last two AWA TV tapings in 1990. I just confirmed with my brother that the battle royal was the last match at the taping, hence the last AWA TV match ever. I couldn't remember if it was that or the tag team title change between the Destruction Crew and DJ Peterson & Trooper.

I'm glad you're including the Saito vs. Zbyszko matches and Race vs. Zbyszko. Showing one of the final matches from the tapings would be cool too. The only other match from the AWA that year that I thought stood out was Tony Denucci vs. Johnnie Stewart from the Light Heavyweight tournament. It was actually a pretty fast paced match for the AWA.

Claw's results for the last TV taping:

8/11/90 Rochester, MN

AWA Champion Larry Zbyszko beat Harley Race dq

DJ Peterson & The Trooper beat Destruction Crew Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom to win AWA Tag Title

Buck Zumhofe beat Jonnie Stewart to win AWA Light Heavyweight Title

Jake Milliman won a battle royal to give Larry's Legends the victory in the AWA Team Challenge Series for $100,000

http://sportsandwrestling.mywowbb.com/forum2/13870-4.html

Yeah... Larry-Race should go on there. Looks like Larry had one more defense the next week, but it wasn't a taping. The tag title probably should at least be highlighted, and probably the Team Challenge Final as well.

HAMADA'S UWF #26 HAMADA'S UWF HISTORY COMM: VOLUME 1

Finished watching all the 1990 footage off of this.

Matches 1-8 are all clipped to hell (#4 isn't even on the disc). After that everything else except match 13 airs in full or close to it.

From 3/5 Super Astro & Lizmark vs Casas & El Espanto Jr and Perro vs Hamada both looked awesome based on the highlights, might be worth tracking down the full version.

Of what aired complete i'd consider these 3 absolutely must have matches

6/1 Gran Hamada vs Perro Aguayo - Felt like a war, like the lucha equiv of Finlay vs Regal as they just lay into each other with brutal shots.

6/7 Yoshinari Asai vs Negro Casas - Don't know how this compares to their other matches but in 1 word i'd call this brilliant. 1 of the most well thought out matches i've ever seen whear every second feels important and there's a million little things that blew my mind like Casas trying to counter a figure 4 with an ankle lock or desperatly avoid being put in a surfboard, stuff that makes perfect sense but you rarely if ever see anyone else do. Wouldn't call it the MOTY for 1990 but i'd be surprised if there's more then a tiny handfull of matches better then this. Easy top 10 world wide candidate atleast, possibly top 5.

11/17 (Elimination Match) Aja Kong, Bison Kimura, Madusa, Tarantula & Xochilt Hamada vs Manami Toyota, Mariko Yoshida, Kaoru Maeda, Mika Takahashi & Esther Moreno - about 15 of 25 aired on the version i've got, dunno if there's a more complete version or not. Either way this is one of the greatest elim tags i've ever seen.

Best of Hamada's UWF Vol. 6

From this i'd add the 6/4 Aja, Bison, Grizzly vs Toyota, Kaoru, Takahasi tag to the must have list as well. Great action with a super hot crowd. The AJW girls working on Universal shows helped gain them a lot of new fans this is a perfect example why.

Couple more mentions for the good to include if there's still room pile from AJW

5/13/1990 (Glove Match) Madusa vs Aja Kong - They had a big feud that year and this is the best of the bunch.

3/2/1990 (AJW Tag Titles) Etsuko Mita & Yumiko Hotta © vs Manami Toyota & Mima Shimoda

3/2/1990 Akira Hokuto & Yumiko Hotta vs Suzuka Minami & Mitsuko Nishiwaki

Updates on the local TV:

* Fuchi vs Kikuchi is in full here! This is the version of the match we'll use.

* The Fantastics vs Kobashi/Ace match is the one that did not make NTV. We get the last 10 minutes of the match. We'll put this on because it's so rare.

* Taylor vs Taue was better than I thought it would be, and will go on if there's room.

Now I need to go through the original run of Samurai Classics to see what aired there that didn't air on TV. I know there was the Misawa (as Tiger Mask) match against Kobashi, but there may be more.
