Loss
Just the finish from MSC of Morton winning the Unified title from Gilbert. After the match, Gilbert handcuffs him to the ring ropes and then beats up his dad. Who is this valet always with Gilbert at MSC and why is she never with him on TV? Eddie Marlin comes to make a save and gets clocked. Jarrett and Lawler finally run Eddie off. Cut to the studio, and Eddie Marlin is out and wants Gilbert out now. He tells him the only reason he even has a job is because Morton said not to fire him when Marlin wanted to. Marlin says he is being fined $5,000, and Gilbert goes from nonchalant to suddenly caring a little bit. Gilbert tells him to make like Ross Perot and get out. I love dated references in the context of a yearbook! Gilbert says however much money he has to pay is worth it and he wants his belt back. Gilbert is going in the ring against Tony Falk and seems to be making quick work of him, but Morton comes out and goes after him with a vengeance. Fun studio brawl that I wish would have lasted a little longer, but Morton runs him off then does a great fired up promo.
Tim Evans
The woman is Lauren Davenport who managed all the heels during the time. I think she only appeared with Gilbert a couple times on tv. Interesting that they re did the handcuff angle with the Mortons after doing it on tv with DWB and Dirty white girl. Morton is no DWB on the mic looking for revenge.
shoe
I loved the open field tackle that Morton does. Morton's revenge promo was really good.
WingedEagle
Morton ducks a punch with chain and rolls up Gilbert to win Unified title. Afterwards Gilbert handcuffs Morton to ropes and destroys Paul Morton with a chain & piledriver. Lawler & Jarrett save and Gilbert bails. Definitely a hot angle. Eddie Marlin fines Gilbert $5K, and he dismisses that as nothing before Morton attacks him during a squash vs. Tony Falk.
PeteF3
Ricky Morton ducks an attempted chain shot and backslides Gilbert to win the Unified World title. Gilbert takes his frustrations out afterward--Lauren Davenport helps him handcuff Morton to the ropes and Gilbert brutalizes Paul Morton, and even drops him with a piledriver! Crazy to see a guy who looked as frail as Morton getting knocked around like that. Eddie Marlin tries to break things up and takes a great bump off a Gilbert punch. Marlin in the studio calls Gilbert out and once again we have a heel who would have been fired, but gosh darn it, the babyface just wants him in the ring THAT BADLY. So instead it's a $5,000 fine. Gilbert wants Marlin to do a Ross Perot and "get out." Morton interrupts a Gilbert match against Tony Falk (babyface now?) and runs him off. This Monday there won't be any referee at all--match goes until one man can't continue. Sounds good to me. It's nice to see the Unified title being contended for among other guys even if you know it'll always end up back with Lawler eventually. ajtroma
Well, the Perot joke was as fresh as the headlines then, that week if memory serves me
garretta
Nice job portraying Paul as an unbiased official right to the end. I figured that he and Ricky would hug after the match, since Ricky had just won the Unified title, but you couldn't tell that they were father and son until after the attack started. That's superior attention to detail. Why was Lauren holding Ricky down when he was already handcuffed to the ropes? I guess she had to have something to do. I'm surprised that someone like Eddie doesn't slap the taste out of Corey's mouth. There's something overly aggressive in the way he gets on the heels that would earn him a trip to the hospital if he wasn't protected as an announcer. It's not what he says; it's how he says it. Come to think of it, Lance toed that line a time or two himself, but he looked so frail that he got away with it more easily, plus it wasn't an every week kind of thing; you really had to go some to get the Lancer's dander up. Gilbert was the perfect arrogant heel; he truly doesn't care what he has pay in fines or who he has to go through to get his belt back. It's at times like these that people like Marlin really aren't effective; how can you punish someone who truly doesn't give a damn, who you can't fire because your champion wants him back in the ring, and who can knock you flat with one shot? I loved Dave telling Eddie that he'd introduce him however he (Dave) wanted to after Eddie instructed him to introduce him (Eddie) as the King of Wrestling.. Only Dave could get away with it, and only he could pull it off as well as he did here. I thought Tony was one of Eddie's lackeys not too long ago. I guess he's seen the light! I loved Ricky's promo, but I get why they didn't use the stip that he talked about. Once it become known that Ricky was leaving, they would have had to have him do a stretcher job for Eddie, and it's risky to do that with a hometown boy, especially one whom you may want to work with again someday. It was better to do the screwy finish they did and keep Ricky hot for a potential return, even if it was a couple of years down the road (as it ended up being, courtesy of the USWA/SMW feud). I can't wait to see the full-length studio match between these two from a couple of weeks before so I can get an idea of how well they work together. The MSC clips are nice, but it's tough to really get the flavor of a match from just a minute or two.
dawho5
I liked Morton's promo a lot. He was so much more than the ultimate FIP that he is remembered for. Not a guy who would carry your promotion, but definitely somebody you would want around. I LOVED Eddie's promo. He has been on fire of late.
