Highlights of a match from Knoxville. The ring has no apron and as a result looks very weird. The Gangstas are great on promos and at getting heat, but they are really green, even though they both have a few decent moves that they execute well. Still, Dave said at the time that Morton carried this feud and from the two matches to make this set so far, that appears to be true. Gotta love Les Thatcher calling New Jack's punches "murderous". The Gangstas appear to win the SMW tag titles after New Jack uses the nightstick and That Racist Les Thatcher is horrible in his reaction. However, That Racist Bob Armstrong convinces That Racist Mark Curtis to restart the match, and Those Racists the Rock & Roll Express win the match and keep the titles.

At least we know nobody will be hiding under the ring as there is no apron. This match was okay. The Gangstas probably should be doing only short matches. They end up getting the victory through illegal means. But Bob Armstrong shows up and has the referee reverse the decision and Express keep their titles. Not that finish again!

There is no apron attached to the ring. Totally bizarre looking. The match isn't much of anything and we get a re-start after New Jack hits Robert with a nightstick and Bullet Bob comes out and tells Mark Curtis about it. Curtis re-starts the match and the Rock N Rolls quickly retain their belts. They gloat about it afterwards in an interview with Armstrong.

There have been a lot of restarts lately in the yearbook. The match again disappointed greatly as it was to scientific for a hate feud. I could understand the Rock N Rolls may have an advantage with wrestling but that is never brought to the attention of the viewer.

With the bizarre ring with no skirt, the outdoor setting with no crowd on the floor, this looks like some Puerto Rico match. At this point the Rock'n Roll do look older and dated, I have to admit. Gibson barely does anything and Morton is an auto-pilot. It's enough to have a semi-decent match with the Gangstas, but the restart/immediate finish I always hated. The best thing about this match is to watch the two black kids in the front row, in the middle of an ocean of white rednecks, chearing for the Gangstas. Fight the power and bring the noise kids !

(Armstrong assuming the role of commisionner again despite not actually being the commissionner is annoying)

That is one rickety-looking ring, and other than Mustafa's pump splash none of the 4 guys seem to eager to take any big bumps on it. Oddly enough--or maybe not, I don't know--the Gangstas are slightly better working on top than working R'nR shine sequences. Not really a great match but better than the TV bout, though the clipping helps. Chip Kessler's reaction to the apparent pinfall is hilarious--it's literally a recreation of the viral

Yes, I too noticed the black youngsters cheering the Gangstas, and disgustedly slamming down their fists when the match is restarted.

Post-match promo from Bullet Bob and the Rock 'n Rolls. Bob was acting under direction from the "new Commissioner," who I think was supposed to be Bill Watts but that never came off.

Lengthy highlights of a match from the Tennessee Valley Fair, Knoxville, TN. The match is held outdoors and there is no skirt on the ring apron so has a feel of being from a big outdoor show in Puerto Rico. Some nice double team maneuvers from the Rock & Rolls, but it does seem strange seeing The Gangstas trying to ‘wrestle’ and use moves like a bear hug. Double dropkick to Mustafa, but instead of counting the fall Mark Curtis tries to get Ricky Morton out of the ring. With Curtis distracted New Jack nails Robert Gibson in the back of the head with a blackjack and puts Mustafa on top of him. Curtis turns round, sees Mustafa on top, counts the pin and calls for the bell. Bob Armstrong comes down to ringside and tells Curtis what happened, who after also checking with the crowd, restarts the match. Morton then immediately rolls New Jack up with an O’Connor roll for the three count and the win.

A decent match that was better than the first TV match between the two teams, but not as good as the parking lot brawl. I hated the finish as they did the exact same ‘stop/start/immediate’ pin just over a month ago in The Thrillseekers vs Heavenly Bodies match at Night of Legends. Another small point is that there is also no consistency in Mark Curtis’ officiating. Here he is in this match trying to get Morton out the ring after the double dropkick, but the amount of times the Rock & Roll Express have hit that move on an opponent and then they will both cover him for the pin. I doubt many would even notice, but something that irked me about this match.

We get a post-match interview from The Bullet and the Rock & Rolls. Ricky wants to thank Bob Armstrong for coming out and letting them know what happened, as ever since The Gangstas have been in Smoky Mountain Wrestling they’ve tried to run over the Rock & Roll Express and use them as a stepping stone. Bob says not only was he watching because he was interested in the championship match, but the new Commissioner called him up and knowing the problems they’ve had with The Gangstas, asked him as a personal favor to watch the match and make sure nothing gets out of hand and that everyone gets a fair deal. The Rock & Roll Express didn’t get a fair deal, he saw Robert get hit in the head with a blackjack, and to him that’s not fair. They got the 1-2-3 in the end, they’re the rightful winners and they’re still the SMW tag team champions.

This was actually from the 10/1 TV show and not the 9/17 by the way.

  • GSR changed the title to [1994-09-17-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs The Gangstas

Wow. I always liked the Express. I always liked Armstrong and referee Mark Curtis too. Disgusted to see them take part in this racist conspiracy to rob the Gangstas of the title win here.

It really is fun to look at the match and the angle from the perspective of New Jack. I mean is he wrong with most of the stuff he's said? Can you blame him? Les Thatcher's commentary and Armstrong and Morton's promo are full of undertones and over explanation that it actually does come off as conspiracy, although I don't think they're trying to go for that.
