Matt D
Sarge really doesn't get credit as a worker. Dave hated him in 90-91 when he was really working his ass off and obviously his earlier runs are his earlier runs.
Al
I find 60% of North American voters to be really low as far as voting someone in.I've looked at this previously comparing it to Baseball's Hall. About 98% of guys who reach the 60% threshold eventually make it to the required 75%. The only exceptions I know of are Gil Hodges and Jack Morris, if he misses this winter. rovert
Reading this: http://wrestlingclassics.com/.ubb/ultimate...ic;f=7;t=000546 Â Yohe's comment is very odd. I think Wade is removed from the Observer circle as anyone. Â Mike Tenay has won a lot of WON awards but slso is a very good friend of Dave's. I wonder it being too close to the Observer keeps you off the list. So that would explain Keller too.--Steve Yohe
JerryvonKramer
Disappointed to see Yohe go for Lesnar for those reasons. I think there'll be a lot of people who do that. I've never really understood that old-school attraction to legitness, I don't see why it gives anyone bonus points.
Dylan Waco
I think the Yohe argument for Brock is terrible, but I also think it comes out of the context of being a guy who has done a ton of historical research on wrestling from a period when shooting ability mattered. kjh
A lot of people vote on gut feeling. Gut feeling is deceptive in Lesnar's case. The UFC run obviously makes him feel like a lot stronger candidate than he actually should be, as that's success in a different field. His first WWE run was only for two years and though he developed into an amazingly good worker given his relative inexperience, he never drew or got over quite to the level of the push he received. The New Japan run was pretty much a disaster for everyone involved. He's done reasonably well on his WWE return, but he hasn't been the difference maker he had the potential to be. That's still only half a dozen matches. Â Really the main difference between him and Batista is one had a successful MMA career and the other did not. Indikator
It's interesting to see that Yohe is more about the potential and the peak than the body of Lesnar's work. But if you consider him knowing quite a bit about short term superstars like Primo Carnera and Maurice Tillet I can't really criticize his argumentation too much. mookeighana
There's a lot of candidates that I like but I don't felt that I can judge everyone in the category. I like people like Atlantis or Carlos Colon or Enrique Torres or Jackie Pollo or Volk Han based on what I've read and learned but I don't honestly think I'm qualified to say that I follow those territories sufficiently to judge. So it leaves modern era and non wrestling personalities.

I know he did it one year as a separate category and stopped for whatever reason, but it is obvious that people will be voting for Brock for reasons that have nothing to do with his pro wrestling career. In fact if not for his UFC stint I don't even think Brock ends up on the ballot.

So it leaves modern era and non wrestling personalities. I think Torres and Colon are two of the five strongest guys on the ballot and the other three are luchadores.  I'm interested to see who is on your radar for a potential vote Chris  I'm computerless this week. This morning I wrote down everyone and so I haven't run any numbers. Just reading the ballot, I ranked candidates into their three tiers based on my gut feelings within their territory. I took all my tier one candidates (about 27). Then I sorted that list into A (4), B (15), C (8). Among the B list, I ranked each of the people within the territory and took the top ranked person.  The nine folks that emerged were: Matsunaga, Colon, Edge, RNR Express, Big Daddy, Atlantis, Sasaki, Koloff and Torres. Again, this was driven by gut reactions - not necessarily thoughtful evaluations.  Colon and Big Daddy were the two that felt hardest to justify beyond regional legends but ultimately they felt like bigger deals. I am realizing that I can't speak meaningfully about Mexico, Japan, pacific with enough confidence so I have a lot more deliberation and evaluations to do. JerryvonKramer
Chris, one barometer for how big a deal guys like Colon and Big Daddy were in the mainstream might be to run searches on key newspapers from the period in which they were active until now. Then run searches on some other test cases. Â Let's say it comes out that Big Daddy was mentioned in the UK Press over X,000 times in that period, and the closest competitor only X00 times. That would be one way of actually quantifying these seemingly intangible things like "being known in the mainstream". It may not significantly add to the case of a guy like Big Daddy, but at least it would be empirical rather than anecdotal evidence for just how "big" he was. I think it was his fellow colleagues in the MMA media that advised him to make his WON MMA HOF disappear, but I don't remember if he ever gave the exact reason why. Dylan Waco
I still think Daddy is the single toughest guy to evaluate on the ballot. On the one hand I understand the arguments against him (allegedly was part of what killed the business, terrible worker, for a guy who would be going in as a "draw" he would easily be the one with the least "meat" in terms of actual crowd sizes/gates, horrible reputation in the business, seen as a joke by peers and even fans), but having said that is really hard to see what the argument for other UK guys is when the guy virtually everyone concedes is the most well known wrestler in the history of the country is considered a "no" vote. I love Jim Breaks, think he was a great worker, I know he was often a title holder and appeared on tv more than almost anyone, but it really seems odd to argue that Breaks is more deserving than Daddy. Â Colon to me is not as tough as people say. If people want to say he shouldn't get in because he wasn't in demand enough or a star anywhere else I get the argument, but that means you have to contend with the counter argument that Colon was one of the most consistent drawing cards of the 80's and was in the main event of a whole bunch of 10k shows (most of which he was a promoter for and I have discovered from watching the footage that PR business was far from anemic in the 90's which is what you often here). Â I get that it's a flawed metric in many ways but look at this list compiled by Matt Farmer. Colon appears on it nine or ten times depending on how you want to count it. How many guys on the list appear that many times and AREN'T in the Hall of Fame? Â Â 980 ** Carlos Colon & Dory Funk Jr & Mighty Igor & Bobo Brazil wrestled at the National Stadium, Lagos Nigeria. Dylan Waco
Also don't give up on my boy Patera, in case you haven' t heard I can make the case
jdw
A part of me just wishes Dave would start adding MMA guys into the equation. I know he did it one year as a separate category and stopped for whatever reason, but it is obvious that people will be voting for Brock for reasons that have nothing to do with his pro wrestling career. In fact if not for his UFC stint I don't even think Brock ends up on the ballot. I tend to think another reason people are voting for Brock due to looking over that weak collection of "I FOLLOWED THE MODERN PERFORMERS IN U.S/CANADA CANDIDATES". People want to vote for Someone, and usually want to use up their 10 slots. If you're a fan who came of age in fandom largely in 1995-2013, then the pickings are slim. And look at those years again: it's nearly 20 years now. We're going to have more and more voters with that reference point, as older voters move on. Â Combine the two: looking for someone to vote for that they watched, and Brock having "cred" with those who give two shits about that bullshit. It gives him a base of voters. If Edge and/or Batista move off that list, with few people note getting added to the ballot in that grouping/"region", then Brock will get more and move votes. jdw
I think the Yohe argument for Brock is terrible Not easy to defend. Â I'd chalk it up to watching the WWE PPV over the past year (and not TV), and liking Brock as a big guy who kicks ass (setting aside the finishes). Plus Brock has always been a good seller, and while that's not a major thing that Yohe looks for out of Big Guys, he does appreciate it when guys like Vader and Hansen also can make opponents look good. Brock is kind of in Yohe's wheelhouse.

The funny thing is there are interesting guys in that category, but almost all of them were effectively finished by the time the MNW's came around. KrisZ
This Friday night's show at Arena Mexico could be really big for Atlantis & Blue Panther's chances at getting in the HOF.

I get your point and think it could help put one or both over especially if the show does well and Dave covers it big time in the Observer. Â My thought is that Panther should be in. I'm less certain on Atlantis (though I lean toward thinking yes), but A. I haven't seen much 80's Atlantis and B. based on what I have seen I think Panther is a vastly better worker. jdw
It splits three ways: Â Pre-MNW MNW Post-MNW Â On the first, the super major key players are all in, be they Expansion or Pre-Expansion. Ivan is major, as are the Andersons (who seem to have gotten moved into a different category despite being a direct peer to Ivan)... but they're not exactly Super Major players. There isn't anyone there who is going to pull 80%+. Â Same goes for the MNW era. There really isn't a strong MNW candidate left: Sting splits his case between Expansion Wars and MNW era. The big boys from that era are in, or are like Hall & Nash and simply aren't ever going in. Â Post-MNW... this is where candidates get thing as we've talked about for years. Trip is in. Angle went in long ago. Rey splits eras, since he get credit for his WCW MNW era, and his AAA pre-MNW stuff. Cena is in. And... it's really thin. Â We have a few guys coming in a couple of years who will get in easy: Bryan and Punk. But other than that, it's the Batista, Edge and Brock types: WWE main eventers, lots of PPV, but no one really thinks they're Austin or Rock, or even Trip. I think as Dave pushes some of them, and one or more of them clears off, then it makes it more likely the others will as well over time. I mean... who is coming up after Punk and Bryan that's a candidate? It's really slim. Â People really want to vote for someone. If they don't have Japanese and/or Mexican candidates to eat up their 10 picks, then they're going to focus on those Americans and feel they have to vote for someone. Â Meltzer heavily pushing the show is the reason why I posted that because more people will be watching the show than normal and both men are in very high profile matches on the card. BP is a better worker than Atlantis yes but Atlantis has had the better career if you get where I'm coming from and the upcoming 80's set will be very friendly to him. BP will get his shine as well but years working for UWA and their lack of footage is a disadvantage for him.

Regarding the Andersons their last year together as a team was 1981 while Ivan worked as a high profile type guy during the JCP/WWF war so he is definitely more modern than the Andersons as a team. mookeighana
At the risk of hijacking some good 2013 discussion for a future debate, people think Bryan Danielson is a sure bet? I must be in the minority but Brock seems stronger (literally and figuratively) an I'm not really sold on him yet. Bryan Is a great worker, but I'd like to see step evidence of drawing power akin to Brock before I'd be fully swayed. Â I'm planning on running a bunch o' numbers when I get back to Minnesota (I've been in Boston/Chicago all week) so I will have more stats on ballot figures in a few days (hopefully). I'm trying to keep an open mind, and moreover seeking a backwards deduction of what figures have and haven't been added to look for outliers. Dylan Waco
Chris I know you will actually research and study the stuff which is why I think it's awesome that you have a ballot. I'd be interested in any stat research you do that leads to your conclusions on candidates btw.  On Danielson, he's getting in on work alone. Even IF this main event push doesn't work out (and I have no position on that at this point) it wouldn't matter - he's considered the best worker of this generation and will get in for that. Whether he should or not is a completely different debate  I actually think Punk will be a bigger argument than Danielson
