What if, Randy Savage joined the WWF in 1996?

I wanted to throw my hat into fantasy booking, for some reason. Slabinski611 threw this out as an option in a thread and he allowed me to go with it.

 

What if Randy Savage returned to the WWF at Survivor Series 1996? I know this was a rumour out there at the time, however I have no idea if it had any validity. However, I am going to run with it.

 

I am not going to start at Survivor Series though, but start the night after Buried Alive. I am going to loosely follow events, but modify as I go.

 

For reference here is the events of Buried Alive:

 

In Your House "Buried Alive" - Indianapolis, IN - Market Square Arena - October 20, 1996 (9,649; 8,238 paid)

Free for All - featured a backstage segment in which Ahmed Johnson was seen standing over an injured Farooq with a 2x4 in hand and several referees demanding Ahmed put down the weapon; the following weekend, WWF President Gorilla Monsoon announced he had suspended Ahmed Johnson pending an investigation into what exactly happened backstage:

Barry Windham pinned Justin Bradshaw (w/ Uncle Zebakiah)

Pay-per-view bouts - featured Vince McMahon, Jerry Lawler, & Jim Ross on commentary; included Dok Hendrix conducting a backstage interview with the Smoking Gunns regarding their upcoming WWF Tag Team Title shot, during which Billy claimed Sunny would be back with him once they win the belts back; featured an in-ring promo by Ross, following the tag team title match, in which he claimed McMahon was trying to make him look bad and said he would have Bret Hart on Raw the next night; Ross then addressed McMahon and said if he wasn't going to give him a working mic then he would leave, with Ross then throwing the mic at McMahon and leaving ringside; included footage from the Free for All pre-show of backstage interviews with Farooq and Ahmed Johnson and of the lockerroom incident in which Ahmed was found standing over an injured Farooq with a 2x4; featured an ad for the WWF Hall of Fame, Nov. 16 at the Mariott Marquee in Times Square, and the Survivor Series the next day; included Jim Ross interrupting Dok Hendrix' backstage interview regarding his upcoming match with WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series:

Steve Austin pinned Hunter Hearst Helmsley (sub. for Savio Vega) with the Stunner at 15:30; prior to the bout, Kevin Kelly conducted a backstage interview with Austin regarding Helmsley replacing Vega and Bret Hart returning the following night on Raw; mid-way through the match, Mr. Perfect appeared ringside to take Helmsley's valet backstage; after passing Austin on the floor, Austin confronted Perfect and later threw water in his face before backing off and Perfect leaving ringside with the valet; during the match, Jim Ross' audio went in and out, which he blamed on Vince McMahon

WWF Tag Team Champions Davey Boy Smith & Owen Hart (w/ Clarance Mason) defeated the Smoking Gunns at 9:17 when Owen pinned Billy with a spin wheel kick after Smith stopped the challengers' attempt at the Sidewinder; during the bout, Sunny was shown watching the match backstage and, afterwards, applauding Smith & Hart's win

WWF IC Champion Marc Mero (w/ Sable) pinned Goldust (w/ Marlena) (sub. for Farooq) with a Samoan Drop and Shooting Star Press at 11:37 after Mr. Perfect, who did guest commentary for the match, punched the challenger on the floor as the referee ordered Hunter Hearst Helmsley backstage when Helmsley appeared to confront Perfect at ringside; prior to the bout, the commentary team conducted an interview with Mero, backstage, about his facing Goldust instead of Farooq

Psycho Sid pinned Vader (w/ Jim Cornette) with the chokeslam at 8:00 after ducking a clothesline; due to pre-match stipulations, Sid earned a world title shot against WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels the following month at Survivor Series; after the match, Michaels, who did guest commentary for the contest, and Sid had words and shook hands

The Undertaker defeated Mankind (w/ Paul Bearer) in a Buried Alive match at 18:25; after the match, the Executioner attacked the Undertaker from behind with a shovel - with Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Justin Bradshaw, Goldust, Crush, Mankind, and the Executioner (Terry Gordy) then burying the Undertaker; as the show was about to go off the air, a lightning bolt shot down from the ceiling before the Undertaker's hand was seen coming out of the dirt (Terry Gordy's surprise return after a 12-year absence) (Tombstone: The History of the Undertaker)

WWF Monday Night Raw (1996/10/21 from Ft. Wayne, IN; War Memorial Coliseum)

 

The show starts with the highlights of last night and a video hyping up Bret Hart's return and Mr. Perfect vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

 

Hunter Hearst Helmsley is seen leaving Mr. Perfect's locker room and Perfect is seen lying on the ground holding is knee in agony.

 

Jesse James & Bob Holly vs. The Smokin' Gunns.

* During the match Bart Gunn accidently closthelined Billy Gunn, later on Billy walked out of the match, ending the Smokin' Gunns and leading to Holly & James picking up the victory. This is Jesse James & Bob Holly's debut as a tag team.

 

Backstage Mankind & Paul Bearer & The Executioner are bragging about burying The Undertaker alive and claim you will never see him again. They hyped the Wild Card match at Survivor Series.

 

Jim Ross conducted an in-ring interview with Gorilla Monsoon, Marc Mero, Sable, Mr. Perfect and Hunter Hearst Helmslehy in which Monsoon announced that Perfect was not cleared to wrestle tonight against Helmsley, but Perfect said Mero had volunteered to take his place in the match. Helmsley objected, saying he wasn't obligated to wrestle Mero and that he would only do so if the IC Title was on the line. Perfect then agreed on behalf of Mero that the title would be on the line and Monsoon allowed the match to take place.

 

Sid vs. Davey Boy Smith w/Clarence Mason

* Sid wins via DQ when Owen Hart interfered, after the match, Shawn Michaels made the save. Sunny is seen in the locker room watching the match.

 

Jim Ross conducted an in-ring interview with Bret Hart in which he stated the only thing the WWF was misssing was him. He agreed to return to the WWF and that he would face the best wrestler in the world today, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin at Survivor Series.

 

IC Champion Marc Mero w/Sable vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley

* Mr. Perfect was the guest commentator. At around the ten minute mark, Mr. Perfect hit Mero with a steel chair behind the referee's back, leading to Helmsley winning the title. Helmsley and Perfect celebrated after the match.

 

The show ends with the announcement that Owen Hart will face Shawn Michaels next week.

Bradshaw picks up the win, after Gunn's interference. After the match Windham showed up to prevent a 2-1 beat down.

 

Survivor Series Event Center:

Hype for the previous announced matches take place as well as the hype for the new match annouced last weekend of The Wildmen (Marc Mero & Phil LaFon & Doug Furnas & Mystery Partner) vs. The Blue Bloods (Hunter Hearst Helmsley & Jerry Lawler & Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith). It is announced the drawing for the Wild Card team members will be next week.

 

WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Owen Hart w/ Clarence Mason:

Shawn won via DQ when Davey Boy Smith interfered, Sid made the save leading to a stare down of Shawn & Sid. Sunny comes to ringside and watches the match from the Spanish announce table.

He vows to never be left off a show again, no matter what it takes.

Billy Gunn and Justin Bradshaw get the win by grabbing the tights.

 

A video tribute to Bret "Hitman" Hart is shown, which is interupted by Steve Austin who insults Bret Hart and hypes up Survivor Series.

 

Marc Mero w/ Sable vs. Owen Hart w/ Davey Boy Smith & Clarence Mason

Sunny is watching backstage. Owen Hart is able to get the win with interference by Davey Boy Smith.

I wish I could remember the post, but I posted the idea that once I thought of it I wish it really happened it was so good. I won't get into specific dialogue or anything but it goes like this.

 

Vince opens up RAW cold, standing in the middle of the ring. He welcomes everyone to another episode of blah, blah, blah. Then he goes into a long spiel about "the all-time greats of the WWF", with some subtle digs at Hogan and recent defector Roddy Piper. Finally, he introduces Savage. The crowd goes wild. Randy high-fives the crowd and does his pose from the middle rope. The music dies down and Vince approaches Randy with that shit-eating grin. They shoot the breeze, Randy tells everyone how glad he is to be back and breaks out all the hits ("ooh yeah" "dig it", the finger twirl).

 

Once the pleasantries are all done with Vince talks to Randy about his reigns as IC and World Champ, legendary matches with Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior. And about how Vince said on this very show, two years ago, of how he was Randy's biggest fan (being the better man and not mentioning the rest of his speech about how they could not come to terms, etc.). The crowd roars in approval, but Randy is going still as he watches Vince nearly break down saying this last part.

 

And Vince, who can not help himself by now, brings up Savage's personal life and Elizabeth, and now we see Randy more animated but agitated. He tells Vince to back off this, which he agrees to and apologizes. We see Randy, still in his jacket and shades, nod his head in approval and become less agitated. Vince proceeds to blow some more smoke for about 30 seconds before the music hits again, and Vince announces him, mistakingly as...

 

"The Nacho Man".

 

Music stops.

 

Vince has a serious lump in his throat, and the beginning of the cold sweat he perfected on Larry King and Donahue.

 

Randy slowly removes his jacket, and his glasses. He takes the mic away from Vince (or picked it up after Vince dropped it in fear) and proceeds to shoot the "Macho Man" Randy Savage heel promo from Hell upon Vince and the WWF for not only making the character he gave his blood, sweat and tears to a cartoon, but also sticking him in the broadcast booth at the peak of his career. Vince, not Mr. McMahon, says something in his defense to which Randy replies by beating the Hell out of him in the middle of the ring. And right about when he's going to deliver the big elbow, Shawn flies down to the ring to defend McMahon.

That sounds fantastic. It would do a great job of addressing the past, but also starting a new chapter to go forward with.

Come back from commercial and we see Vince laid out on a stretcher, and security both rushing him out and also separating Randy and Shawn. Jerry at the booth suddenly changes and reports everything as a shoot. Jim Ross comes out and the show goes on.

It's what they should have done in WCW really, bring Randy in as a heel because it could have gone in an interesting way with him and Ric aligned against Hogan and Sting. He was as, if not more, effective as a heel in WWF and especially against Hogan. I don't think it quite worked the other way around when Hulk and Randy worked each other in '96.

 

What would be interesting is how if at all Randy could have adapted to what would become the Attitude Era if they signed him back and he stuck around. More from a character standpoint than wrestling. I'd hate to think of what a 1998 version of the Randy/Elizabeth dynamic in 1986 would be like.

From what I've seen of Mach in Memphis, he would have fit in perfectly in the Attitude Era. He was basically Brian Pillman before Brian Pillman was. He was dangerous and a madman.

It's what they should have done in WCW really, bring Randy in as a heel because it could have gone in an interesting way with him and Ric aligned against Hogan and Sting. He was as, if not more, effective as a heel in WWF and especially against Hogan. I don't think it quite worked the other way around when Hulk and Randy worked each other in '96.

I don't think it would have worked because the WCW crowd wasn't going to boo Randy off the bat. He was too well liked and respected as a performer. The same people that were hardcore NWA/WCW fans that hated Hogan being on top in their company were the same fans that would cheer a Randy Savage over him. Everyone loved Savage. Put Flair/Savage together against Hogan and the crowd would turn against Hogan even more. Hogan, to his credit politically, recognized that and that's why he brought Savage in as "a Hogan buddy" and immediately stuck him with Sting underneath him on the face tier. Those two were the biggest threats to his "#1 babyface" status. And Flair was always going to be more popular with that audience than Hogan. Flair against a beloved babyface....sure, those fans would hate Flair in that moment, but Hogan was far from beloved.

 

It's no surprise that when they pushed Savage-Flair as the top program and put Hogan in the background a bit their business picked up, and really picked up when they finally turned Hogan heel.

The way Randy could have maintained heat during the build-up to WM would have been to have some friction between him and Austin. After Mania, there's a four-way feud going with Bret, Steve, Randy and Shawn. Hell, I could see Randy eventually aligning himself with McMahon in '98 after his heel turn. Randy and Steve in '98 would have been pure money.

My only issue is why you'd make Savage a mystery guy. In an era of Monday Night Wars, it'd be silly to not use him to pop a rating or a buyrate by advertising him, as opposed to making him a mystery guy and not milking it. Really, it doesn't matter who, so long as his opponent isn't an absurdly heatless jobber, but having Savage just run in, kick someone's ass, and cut a promo would be a perfect way to reintroduce him. Savage was very impressionistic anyway. The mystery guy thing just doesn't match.

WWF IC Champion Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Goldust:

The show opens with Goldust getting his revenge on Triple H for the Chyna attacks on Marlena. He walks out as IC Champion.

 

WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith vs. Doug Furnas & Phil LaFon:

After months of chasing the tag champs, Furnas and LaFon win the tag team titles in an awesome match.

 

Rocky Maivia & Ahmed Johnson vs. Faarooq & Too Cold Scorpio:

Rocky Maivia decides he has had enough of the fans boos and turns on Ahmed Johnson and joins the Nation of Domination. NOD pick up the victory due to Rocky's turn.

 

The Undertaker & Legion of Doom vs. Mankind & Vader & Terry Funk (Street Fight):

A vicious brawl leads to Taker's team winning. Afterwards Paul Bearer's team argue, but Bearer calms them down by whispering them some kind of secret.

 

Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (I Quit):
It happens exactly as it did at the real WrestleMania XII.

 

WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Savage:

In an all babyface contest, the legend Randy Savage regains the title for the third time.

 

On the Raws after WrestleMania Bret completes his turn and reunites Davey Boy and Owen to form the Hart Foundation. Austin wants to fight Bret again, but Bret says that Austin couldn't even beat Owen. That match is set for In Your House.

 

Paul Bearer reunites his team and uses this secret to get Taker to join his team. At In Your House Paul Bearer will have all the power as Taker will win the World Title and Mankind the IC Title.
