Coffey
This was a comment on DVDVR that I thought would make a good topic for debate. Just a random comment in the middle of a reply but it really made me start to think: [Mr.] Perfect is a candidate for having the most "I had high expectations and ended up disappointed" matches in WWF of anyone I can think of. On the other end of the spectrum are guys that are usually in matches that you have low expectations for that leave you feeling that it was a lot better than anticipated. For me, John Cena was one of those guys for quite some time. Eventually, I just realized the dude is money when on Pay-Per-View. What are some examples of both that spring to your mind? Fantastic
Sin Cara (Mistico). Edit: To elaborate, given his body of work in Mexico and Japan, alongside the success of Rey Mysterio in WWE. I thought Sin Cara would be huge from the get go. My expectations were that "this is a wrestler that is going to blow us away with his in ring work, has a solid marketing behind him, and will effortlessly assume and probably exceed the role that Mysterio played up until that point". Coffey
Chris Jericho in WWF is a big one for me too. I loved him in WCW as the Cruiserweight coward, with lame jokes & swarmy rules enforcement. In WWF, he just constantly disappoints me. I never saw him as a top guy. His matches left a lot to be desired for me. I even remember him going off online over people not praising a PPV match of his with, I believe, Rob Van Dam. Plus, his whole babyface run with the awful catchphrases was cringe-worthy. Remember when Planet of the Apes came up and him Stephanie McMahon in the face with pies? That was during a Jericho segment. The only thing that comes to mind that I remember liking Jericho doing in WWE is when he hit Shawn Michaels in the face with his obesely expensive Jeritron 5,000 on The Highlight Reel. Whenever he comes back nowadays, which seems like all the time, I'm more disappointed than excited.
Timbo Slice
Eventual disappointment is Samoa Joe in TNA. Although there were a couple years where he was teflon and you had hope, but they never pulled the trigger, truly. Hero was a disappointment in WWE but it's starting to look like he just wasn't a fit. There's a chance Cesaro could be that unless The Masters get over big and he gets one final shot. I also think Christian coming back from TNA was a disappointment, but I'm not sure how much of that was WWE incompetence and how much of it was that his star was gone after he left TNA, which is saying something. Zoo Enthusiast
Randy Orton. I remember being sort of excited at the idea of his and Bryan's feud, but thought most of their matches were on the underwhelming side. Jericho is also a great choice. funkdoc
matt d's classic example, and likely my pick as well: WCW babyface randy savage so many matchups that sound intriguing on paper, wrestling against guys like finlay...and those matches always turn out to be "savage gets beat up the entire time, lands bodyslam, elbow, pin"
iamthedoctor
Mr. Perfect's run in WWE back in 2002.
overbooked
Owen Hart returning to the WWF post-Montreal for me. It seemed like he was primed for a main event run as the lone Hart, there seemed to be a load of heat around his return, the booking seemed self-evident and he could have had some great matches. Instead he ended up in a mid-card feud with HHH. I would have loved to have seen him more in the main event mix in late 97/early 98 with Michaels, Austin, Foley etc. Jericho is a good pick too. I was always rooting for him to succeed post-WCW, but a lot of his stuff felt a little flat.
C.S.
Mr. Perfect's run in WWE back in 2002. Yeah, that sucked. Remember the Perfect/Boss Man team from around then? That felt like a 12-year-old picking two random wrestlers in the old WWF WrestleFest arcade game.
Loss
Everyone was most excited about Mr. Perfect at that time, but Goldust was the one who came out of nowhere to have a strong run.
