JerryvonKramer
What do you think are the best studio matches? What's the best one you've ever seen? I love a TV studio match. They always feel a bit different to arena matches. Here's my favourite and the best I've seen to date: Ron Garvin vs. Ric Flair (WCW 12/28/85) Truly I love this one. You can hear the chops echo in the studio.
Graham Crackers
The first two that pop into my head are the Dutch Mantell vs Jerry Lawler match where Dutch challenges Jerry to a spur of the moment Loser Leaves Town match and the Bill Dundee handicap match where he uses stalling as a babyface tactic and keeps asking Lance how much time is left on the clock. Dylan Waco
I absolutely love the Invader 1 v. Hercules Ayala studio match. Actually there are two of them, one is pretty good, but the other is absolutely tremendous stuff. I'll see if I can find it and post the link here. Mr. Lacelle
I'm a huge fan of Steven Regal vs Larry Zybszko from WCW Saturday Night.
Log
Did DiBiase/Flair with all the Murdoch shenanigans happen in a studio? If so, that's my pick.
pantherwagner
Did DiBiase/Flair with all the Murdoch shenanigans happen in a studio? If so, that's my pick. Isn't Irish McNeil's Boys Club a gym/civic centre type building rather than a studio? In between Flair vs Garvin, vs Lawler in Memphis (more a classic angle than a classic match really), vs Steamboat at Disney in 1994... probably a few others I'm not even thinking about, does this make Flair the best studio wrestler ever? (BP)
Flair/Brisco and Flair/Lawler are the first two that pop in my head, but I always thought Flair was really fun in a studio setting.
shoe
Sting/Rotundo from 89 is a favorite of mine. Steamboat/Flair from 94. Rock N Roll Express vs Ragin and Ravishing.
BlueGuy
Excellent choices so far. Here's a few not yet listed that are among my favorites all from the Atlanta's Center Stage: Flair vs. Pillman -- April 1991 Flair/Anderson vs. Austin/Vader -- November 1993 Austin vs. Steamboat -- March 1994 Flair vs. Steamboat -- May 1994 Flair/Austin vs. Steamboat/Sting -- July 1994 Vader vs. Dustin Rhodes -- late 1994 Looking at all the selections thus far, I'd really think that the once rumored Flair Unreleased DVD set would be a big seller, especially when considering these are only the studio matches -- the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully it gets the green light one of these days.
KrisZ
This one is one of my favorite Techwood matches that doesn't get talked about.
khawk20
Dino Bravo vs. SD II, Fall 1979, AWA TV. Bravo pulls the huge upset as he was a newcomer to the AWA at the time. SD II was a real monster heel at that point which made the result very significant. Greg Gagne vs. Nick Bockwinkel, Spring 1979, non title match. Gagne pulls off a huge upset and wins with the sleeper. No video out there of that one right now but it was awesome.
PhilTLL
Barry Windham vs. Tully Blanchard, Sunday Edition, 5/10/87. Nothing too fancy, just an exemplary TLD from two of the masters of the studio. I read a pretty good argument around here one time that Tully in Techwood was the best studio worker of all time. Another fun moment of Tully's is his match against Ray Traylor that supposedly got Traylor a lot of buzz as a shockingly natural neophyte. Barry Windham vs. Ron Bass, saddle vs. title, Florida 11/16/83. Not an _excellent_ match per se, but a very good and fairly famous one, with some excellent setup in the form of the "Saga of the Family" and an excellent post-match angle making a very good hour of wrestling television. Memphis Mark
Tommy Rich vs. Bill Dundee on Memphis TV around 1980. Rich just return from GCW . Tommy and and Bill were two faces having a clean match . Rich hits the low blow and gets the cheap win on Dundee. Lawler has a broken leg , so he is on commentary with Lance . Rich goes to the desk completes his turn by pushing Lawler out his his chair and cuts a heel promo on the fallen King. Get moment in Memphis wrestling.
