Carlos Colon & Miguel Perez Jr. vs. Los Pastores (January 1986)

Starts off wild with everyone brawling in the ring. Miguel Perez is just killing dudes to start. Jesus. Colon throws a great punch, but Perez really might just be hitting the Herders in the face and head as hard as he can early on. Fuck. This settles down and its Perez in peril. It’s perfectly soild stuff. Herders aren’t going to make you forget the Midnight Express but they’re perfectly solid (and probably underrated actually) at the sort of classic southern tag work in this match. Perez isn’t going to make you forget about Ricky Morton but I’ve got high hopes for the eventual hot tag to Colon. And it was awesome indeed. Fire, energy all that stuff with some great punches, headbutts, and a dropkick before going for his figure 4. Work towards the finish is fun with everyone in and out of the ring. Good stuff!

This was your traditional southern style tag with a Puerto Rican twist. There was no real babyface shine at the beginning. Instead, everybody just brawled in and around the ring before it eventually settled into a Perez Jr.-in-peril segment. Colon was great working the apron during this. Like, really great. I'm a total mark for guys making it look like they're desperate to get in there and save their partner or generally start wrecking the heels' shit, and that was Colon in this match. At several points he decides he's seen enough and comes in and headbutts someone, which then prompts the ref' to try and get him back out so the Pastores can work some double teams on Perez. It wasn't always smooth, but it worked, and if anything the ref' not always being in perfect position added to the tumult. We saw Colon in a few different roles on disc 1, but this is the first proper look at him playing genuine hot tag. Shockingly enough it's another role he's good in. It's a shame the dubbed over commentary drowns out the crowd a bit because there's no way they wouldn't have been molten for the cartwheel upon entry and the extended stretch of babyface offence afterwards. And that's the second Puerto Rican twist. Rather than going straight to the finish after the hot tag - or even working back and forth for a spell - the whole last stretch is basically Colon and Perez wringing out every bit of comeuppance on the heels that they can. The Pastores bump and stooge, the babyfaces exact revenge, the crowd go home happy. Fun match.

This is basically a tornado brawl from the start. We then settle into heat on Perez that sets up a Colon hot tag. He comes in on fire with the cartwheel, headbutts and punches. Just a really awesome babyface hot tag. Colon dropkicks both Sheepherders, with one bumping to the floor, then goes to work on the other's leg. Figure-Four but they make the save. A bit more babyface dominance before Perez rolls one up for the win.

Solid but enough meat to rise above that. Again this feels like a really good match for TV. Enjoying disc 2 a whole lot more than disc 1.

**3/4

The way the sound on this one mutes the crowd really took me out of it.

Like the ECW style brawl to start, before they moved into a solid heat segment. Colon is awesome taking the hot tag, and it really kicks up a level after that. Finish felt like it could have been a little better, but fun all the way through.

The music on top of the post-match brawl is hilarious.

I thought this was a really strong tag. Colon working the apron and the hot tag was great stuff. The end was again decadent for the babyfaces and they have no intention of quitting even when the bell sounds. Boricua mentioned to me that the Sheepherders went crazy in PR through most of 1985, so all of this stuff makes a bit more sense now. If these two had spent the last 9 months (or more) or more running amok, the crowd would be happy to see this kind of excess from the babyfaces.
