Invader I vs. Chicky Starr (15 Minute Time Limit Retirement vs. Hair) (9/20/87)

Recommended Posts

Since this is match that depends on understanding the lead-up and stipulations around it, i am posting some recaps of the Invader 1 vs. Chicky Starr feud as well as a match review.

A wrestler by the name of Chicky Starr returned to WWC in the summer of 1985 after having been gone for around a year wrestling in the U.S for Southwest. He had previously been in WWC from 82-83 after wrestling on the independent circuit in PR and for Stampede in Canada. Shortly after Chicky returned, Invader 1 went to him and made him an offer. Invader 1 felt that Chicky had great potential and wanted to help the younger wrestler by offering his advice, training and mentorship. Chicky accepted the Invader's offer and Invader 1 took him under his wing. However, as time went by, Chicky started getting antsy about the level of competition he was facing and wanted more challenging opponents. He started expressing that he felt as if someone were purposefully keeping the competition away from him.

Eventually, Chicky revealed that he had found out that Invader 1 was purposefully holding back the top competition away from him. Chicky claimed that it was due to fear and jealousy on the part of Invader 1 of how far he had come. Chicky demanded a match with Invader 1. Invader 1 was taken by surprise by Chicky's challenge and stated that Chicky was mistaken about his allegations. Why would he be blocking him from having competition when he wants him to succeed?

Still, Invader was never one to back down from a challenge and accepted Chicky's challenge to a match. The match took place on December 22, 1985. It was expected to be a teacher vs. student match. It didn't turn out that way. Instead, one of the greatest wrestling rivalries in Puerto Rico history would be born.

It was the last TV taping of 1985. Chicky Starr had challenged his mentor Invader 1 to a match because Chicky felt Invader was blocking him from getting competition. Invader 1, never one to back down from a challenge, reluctantly accepted. It was supposed to be a technical match between a teacher and his student.

Highlights of Invader 1 vs. Chicky encounter 12/22/85 + interviews

Watch until the 4 minute mark first.

The video starts near the end of the match. Invader and Chicky are trading hammerlocks to show who was the superior wrestler. After a few reversals, Invader charges towards the ropes and and drops down. The momentum of this move slings Chicky to the outside. We have a quick cut to Invader holding the ropes open for Chicky to get in. As Chicky gets in, he promptly foul kicks Invader. Chicky then goes outside, shoves Joaquin Padin off his announcer's chair and takes that chair into the ring. (Padin: Friends, what's going on here? I've been shoved down too and he's taken my chair.) Chicky smacks Invader right on the head with the chair, knocking Invader down and busting his head open. As the ref checks Invader, Chicky starts slapping his chest and jumping around in the ring. The ref disqualifies Chicky. Chicky leaves the ring happy with himself. Meanwhile, Invader 1 is lying in the ring completely busted open and bleeding as the ref comes to his assistance.

Invader would be carried to the locker room and require a lot of stitches for the cut on his forehead. As a result, a rematch was signed for the year opening Three Kings Day show on Jan. 6, 1986 (which is on the set).

From the 4 minute mark to 7:20, we see what immediately leads to the hair vs. career match. What happens is Invader attacks Chicky on the Sports Shop., stemming from Chicky stealing Invader's mask. Chicky said Invader would pay for that and executed his plan during a cage match between Hercules Ayala and Invader 1. After knocking Invader out, Chicky proceeded to cut Invader's hair. He ends up bragging about doing it and about humiliating Invader 1. He even holds up a bag with Invader 1's hair to really hammer home how much he is enjoying this.

From here, an irate Invader 1 would show up and demand a match with Chicky, being so irate that he said he would wrestle Chicky in any match with any stipulations just to get his hands on him and make him pay. Chicky said that he would do so, but only if Invader 1's career was on the line. After thinking it over for a couple of weeks, Invader accepted, with the terms not too favorable for him. The match would be a 15 minute time limit, with Invader's career vs. Chicky's hair. The match would continue until there was a definitive winner, it could not end on a DQ or CO. Finally, while Invader had to defeat Chicky within the time limit, all Chicky had to do was last the 15 minutes in order to win the match. Chicky finally had cornered Invader and was sure that he would finally end the career of his hated rival.

Also, the following recap videos should give all of the context to a feud that has raged for 21 months. This aired only one week before Aniversario 87 and the afternoon TV show is focused on recapping the Invader and Chicky feud. We will see the feud's progression and hear from Chicky Starr and Invader 1 about their scheduled career vs. hair match.

Invader vs. Chicky Aniversario 87 Recap

To start we have the short feud recap video shown previously. It covers the initial turn and subsequent attack with the microphone from Jan. 6 of 86 and features scenes from some of their matches. Hugo then says we will hear from Chicky Starr.

HS (at the 2:55 mark): Friends, in this special edition of the 6PM program, we are focusing exclusively on the feud between Chicky Starr and Invader 1. Mr. Chicky Starr, looking back on the past, at the moment you decide to switch sides, the moment you hit Invader 1 with a chair and you buried with a golden bow what was a tremendous friendship with who was you teacher. Today, how does Chicky Starr see everything that has happened, your decisions, your behavior, and what is currently going on in your career?

CS (at 3:26): Yes, exactly. Let's go to the past for one moment. In the past Invader 1, a man well known in Puerto Rico and an exceptional wrestler, here in Puerto Rico, Capitol Sports saw the quality of wrestler I was and sent me to the United States. I was a year over there, where I had many triumphs. Then I returned to Puerto Rico a few years ago, I returned to Capitol Sports. Invader 1 also took note of the quality I had and signalled me out, "You've got a bright future and can go far, and I am going to help you do that". That's precisely what Invader did. He took me to his training camp, a tremendous training camp, like that one there is no other. And Invader 1 taught me a lot. Invader 1, you taught me too much and you know that very well. But what happened? Invader 1 started getting in my way because I was progressing by leaps and bounds. It appears that he didn't like that at all. I asked the company, the promoters, for competition but they did not give me that competition. I did not know the reason why they weren't giving me the competition at that moment, but I later found out and realized the truth. It was Invader 1 who was in the way, who was blocking me from having that competition I was asking for. And Invader 1, when you did that, you made a mistake. After that, I asked for a match against you, publicly and on TV. A match you accepted because I know you never deny a match from anyone. Invader 1, what happened that night, do you remember? It was in Rio Piedras, you wanted to show that you knew more than anyone, you wanted to show the fans that you were the teacher and I was the student. But things backfired on you. I gave you a chair shot, of which I'm very proud of doing. And from that day forward, Invader 1, what I feel for you and towards you is hate, repugnance, yes repugnance towards everything you touch, everything you step on, Invader 1. Because now you have realized this is a different man, this is a new man, and Invader 1, I want to tell you something important. You know I have many scars on this head that you've given me, but look at your face to see that I have given you plenty as well.

HS (at 5:36): Mr. Chicky Starr, talking a little more about your different styles, that quick style you have. You have a 'cruzeta' similar to the one Invader uses. But you don't have something that Invader does, and that is the famous heart punch. What can you tell us about your style and Invader's style?

CS (5:53): Yes, exactly, they are two similar styles. Invader 1, as I said earlier, taught me too much. And that training camp he has is a good one, I'm not going to deny that. And I learned a lot from you Invader, especially that 'cruzeta' which is to finish off any adversary. Precisely when Invader was going to teach me the heart punch technique is when Invader's jealousy started. That's one of the reasons why he didn't teach me that heart punch.

HS (at 6:26): Well friends, we will continue talking with Chicky Starr on this program. In our next segment we will have an interview with Invader 1 to talk about his feud with Chicky Starr. Let's continue with the program.

At 6:38 they show highlights of the first series of Chicky and Invader matches.

The first highlights are from their match on Jan. 16. Chicky gets busted open and proceeds to run off with Invader giving chase.

At 8:19 we see highlights from their cage match on Feb. 8. Chicky tried to climb out of the cage, but Invader stopped him and they exchanged blows from the top of the cage.

At 9:35 we go to an interview with Invader 1.

HS (9:35): Friends, we are now joined by Invader 1. The comments that Chicky Starr made about how he decided to betray you or, even more, how he publicly accused you of being the person, that when he got back from Texas after being triumphant over there, of signalling him out, saying he had a bright future. What do you have to say about all that?

Inv1 (at 9:55): Well, look, like I think everyone knows, the fans that have followed us for many years, when he got back from the States I saw a tremendous future in Chicky Starr. And when I saw that future, him being a Puerto Rican like me, I got it in my head to help him. Because I like helping anyone that has a future, especially in wrestling which is an area I have a lot of experience in. And I want them to reach, with that experience, everyone who I can help, that they reach and give the maximum for Puerto Rico in wrestling. And that's what I saw in Chicky Starr. And I tried, I took him in my hands, and helped him a lot. A very humble kid at the beginning. Later..., that's the question I still ask myself Savinovich. Why did Chicky Starr do what he did to me? Because you know well that he sought out the biggest lie, that I was in the way, that he wanted better competition.

HS (10:54): Oh yes, he accused you again on this program and said you were the one who blocked his path because you were jealous of him.

Inv1 (11:01): You know, that's the point I still don't understand. If I want to help him, why would I interfere over him getting better competition. Right? For what reason if I'm trying to help the man. And for some reason he got that in his head, that I was in his way and that he was not getting better competition because I was in the way. Number one, I do not have anything to do with that, if he wants to sign a contract to face anyone he wants, why would I get in the way of that? It would have made me proud to see Chicky Starr become a great star and to see that I was helping him and he was moving forward. That's what I don't understand and I still ask myself that question. Even when he came to you and made the challenge, I remember that, it was about two years ago, I remember it like yesterday. That he challenged me publicly. I had gone in for an interview, I was wrestling someone that night, I can't remember who, and you told me that Chicky Starr had challenged me. I didn't pay attention to you because it was almost like I hadn't heard you. It was like, "What? What do you mean that Chicky Starr challenged me?". It was the next day and you told me that "Yes, Chicky Starr did challenge you". And I accepted his challenge, because I've never refused to accept a challenge. And when the match came, I remember it was December 23, that I told all the fans that they didn't have to pay one cent. It was in Rio Piedras, that everyone come. And everyone came and they didn't have to pay one cent. It was there that Chicky double crossed me, he hit me with a chair and he gave me a low blow. The reason being that I had more experience than Chicky Starr, or had more experience at that time, and the moment the bell rang to start the match, it looks like he realized that. That I was..., that I had more experience than him, let's put it that way. It was then, I don't know if he felt lost, if he couldn't accept the reality of the situation, because sometimes you have to be man enough to accept things. If he saw I had that experience, all he had to do was extend his hand and say "Invader, I made a mistake challenging you, you have more experience than me". No, he gave me a low blow, he hit me with a chair, they took me to the locker room and I spilled a lot of blood. I had a lot of stitches. And all of the public that has followed wrestling for a while knows of what I'm talking about.

HS (13:10): Invader 1, about the part where he said you taught him too much. In fact, in recent matches he has been winning them with that 'cruzeta' that is part of your arsenal. But he also mentioned something that had not been said before, that you almost taught him the secret of your heart punch, but you didn't because you were starting to get jealous of him.

Inv1 (at 13:33): You know Savinovich, when I saw the man's future I opened my arms and I was going to teach him everything, because the man had a tremendous future. That thing he says about me not wanting to teach him, let me tell you something, you can't teach a child everything at once. When a kid learns to talk you start him with 'momma' or 'poppa', that's where you start. You can't start with 'Hey you, come over here'. That's how I was with Chicky Starr, teaching him everything slowly. That he says that when I was going to teach him the move and I didn't because of jealousy, those are lies from Chicky Starr.

HS (at 14:08): Well friends, we'll continue throughout the program with Invader 1. Later you will hear more comments from Chicky Starr. This is going to be interesting.

This video starts with highlights from their match on Feb. 22. It is chain match, one which Hugo describes as one of their more brutal matches. They drew blood and started resorting to low blows. A lot of hate and blood has been spilled in this rivalry.

At 1:52 we see highlights from May 2 at Rio Piedras. I believe this is the match where Chicky hit a foreign object assisted punch (almost like a heart punch) on Invader and stole the match.

At 2:39 we get highlights from Oct. 15. This would be around the time Invader was after Chicky for the Al Perez turn.

At 3:40 we go back to Hugo and Chicky.

HS: We continue with this special edition of the 6PM program here on TeleOnce. Chicky Starr one of our guests. We are highlighting in this documentary the feud between Invader 1 and Chicky Starr. One of the matches that still comes to my mind, as I remember, is the defining moment at Coliseo Roberto Clemente on January 6, when at one moment, Invader does not want to fight you and asks you to reconsider and rejoin the tecnicos. The public has already seen in the previous segment what you did. My question about this is, have you ever regretted what you did? What do you have to tell us about that.

CS (4:17): No actually, I've never regretted what happened and Invader 1 knows that very well. After so many things had happened, on January 6 of 1986 Invader 1 and I faced off in a match. But before it started, he came to me to say he was sorry, he asked for my forgiveness. Invader 1, it was something that I did not accept. At that very moennt I realized Invader 1, that I could defeat you. That I saw in your eyes fear, I saw a lot of fear. Invader 1, that is the reason for why I have done what I have done until this very day. And that is why Chicky Starr is the superstar of today. I wanted to be a great star and I am Invader 1, and you know that very well. After that a lot of things happened, a lot of important things Invader 1.

HS (5:03): Mr. Chicky Starr, let's talk now about the present, and even more so of the future. Because in the near future, September 20 at the anniversary of Capitol Sports Promotions, a match that everyone is talking about. Retirement vs. hair, 15 minute time limit. You don't have to defeat Invader but he has to defeat you. If he does not win in 15 minutes he retires. If Chicky Starr loses in 15 minutes, you lose your hair. Could you elaborate on this situation?

CS (5:30): Yes. Invader 1, listen to this closely because this message is directed to you. Invader 1, you know that on many occasions I have said here on TV that I am going to take you out of wrestling and that I am going to finish with your career. Invader 1, the day is coming and it is September 20. Hear it well Invader 1, I am very confident in myself and I know I will last those 15 minutes. This I tell you because that is exactly how it will happen. Invader 1, September 20 you know you are obligated, hear this well, you are obligated to defeat me 1-2-3. On the other hand, I do not have to defeat you Invader 1. I only have to last 15 minutes, which is what the contract stipulates. Invader 1, how many times have we fought? Many times. And we have lasted more than 15 minutes. 20, 30, up to 40 minutes, even an hour. You know that too well Invader 1. So Invader 1, no matter, hear it well, no matter what I have to do, bring a rope, a chain with a lock, tie myself to the ringpost, get in a car, climb on top of a truck, run around the stadium posts, whatever. It doesn't matter Invader 1, you know I have very good legs and can run a lot. So Invader 1, the moment has arrived, your hour is here. Start packing your bags, Invader 1. Remember, worldwide sports press will be in Puerto Rico that day. I'm not talking about press from the Caribbean or Puerto Rico, worldwide press including Europe, Japan the U.S., everything. Even the low countries. So Invader 1, let's see what happens. I am very sure of myself, very confident, and you can be sure I will last those 15 minutes. And I will make history, because I will be the only latino that will end you career next Saturday the 20th of September.

HS (7:20): Thank you Chicky Starr. Here we give an open forum to both parties. Later Invader 1 will have his opportunity to tell us what he will do with Chicky Starr on September 20.

This segment begins with Hugo mentioning that this was the year where Chicky Starr tried with all of his wrestlers to take out Invader 1. We go to the end of a Aug. 2, 1987 cage match between Hercules Ayala and Invader 1. Chicky Starr is at ringside wearing one of Invader's masks he had taken from him. El Profe is also there. Hercules and Invader are fighting in the ring when Profe hands Chicky something and Chicky goes through the open cage door to go after Invader. Chicky's leap backfires and Invader proceeds to yank off Chicky's mask and go after him. However, during this the cage door has been locked, leaving Invader alone with Chicky and Hercules. Invader manages to hold both of them off but eventually is decked by Chicky Starr with a foreign object and knocks him out. Chicky then goes to what Profe gave him and produces an electric shaver and scissors. El Ejercito de la Justicia tries to come to Invader's aid, but the cage is locked. Hercules Ayala has taken off his boot and is using it to fend off any attempts from the tecnicos of climbing the cage. Meanwhile, Chicky is cutting the unconscious Invader's hair. We then go to Invader's comments.

HS (at 3:22): Friends, we continue with this special edition of this program, the Television champion Invader 1 is with us. We've previously heard the comments of Chicky Starr (Me: Hugo incorrectly says Invader 1 here, I fixed it to avoid confusion), now it's your turn Invader 1. About what we have seen throughout this program, we saw the moment where this man had already caused you an injury requiring over 30 stitches. Later, on Jan. 6 you still at that time were looking for, I don't know if it was to stop this young man from making a mistake or if it was compassion towards him, you were still trying to get him to reconsider.

Inv1 (at 3:52): That's exactly right. Him being a Puerto Rican, a Puerto Rican just like me, he had already busted my head open, I needed about 37 stitches. That was a Decemeber 23 of 1985. When we were going to face each other on Jan. 6, I'm still thinking because the man has a bright future in wrestling. I was thinking of forming a tag team with him, who knows how far we could have gone as a team, we could have been World champions, etc. Travel the world, put at the top the name of Puerto Rico. And still I'm thinking, because all humans make mistakes, with that big scar on my forehead, but I'm still thinking 'Chicky Starr has made a mistake, maybe he doesn't realize it'. I take the microphone and I'm telling him 'Chicky Starr you're from a town of Puerto Rico, a small town called Vega Baja. I'm from a small town San Lorenzo'. And I'm telling him at that moment, maybe he'll listen to the words I'm saying to him. And he still has the audacity to take that microphone and split my forehead again. You were there. All of the fans that were there that day saw what I'm talking about. I still haven't been able to understand why Chicky Starr acted that way and why he continues to do so. The last thing Chicky Starr did, which I think is the biggest one he did, the humiliation he did to me. You know that sometimes a person like Chicky Starr, who has suffered from many pains. He's fractured his knee, his neck, I've given him smacks of all colors in all of the towns of Puerto Rico. And it's said that one learns from taking hits.

HS (5:22): I don't think he's learned anything.

Inv1 (at 5:24) : I dont think he's learned anything either. I still had a match with Hercules Ayala in a cage, a tough match. And when you're talking abut a tough match, especially a tough wrestler like Hercules Ayala, he still gets in the cage, hits me with something, some kind of object. I don't know what he hit me with, because all I know is when I woke up I was without hair on my head. I believe that might be the greatest humiliation that has ever been done to anyone in the entire world. To shave my head the way he did. And I know, because I always have a saying and you know it well and all the people of Puerto Rico know it well. It is 'Who ever does it me will pay'. I know, and many fans have told me, Invader, you've got to be crazy, 15 minutes is too little time for a person like Chicky Starr. And maybe 15 minutes is too little time. Yes, because I know, and the people of Puerto Rico know, that Chicky Starr is a tremendous wrestler. And Chicky Starr is in tremendous condition. And I know that if he's running, those 15 minutes will go by fast and I won't be able to beat him.

HS (6:26): And not only that, but he's saying even if he has to tie himself up with a chain, get in a car, run through the crowd, go outside, that he's going to last those 15 minutes.

Inv1 (6:36): That's what the people of Puerto Rico have been telling me. They say I've made a mistake signing up for a match like that, my retirement from wrestling, 15 minutes. I have to defeat him, he doesn't have to defeat me, he only needs to last 15 minutes against me. That's what the people of Puerto Rico have been telling me everywhere I've been standing. But you know Savinovich, to me, you don't humiliate anybody. That humiliation hurt me very much. It hurt me a lot. Every time I remember that moment I start crying, to be very honest with you. But Savinovich, retirement from wrestling is at stake. I consider myself a young person. I believe I still have another ten years in wrestling. I feel in good condition, I'm not hurt, and I think I can wrestle ten more years. And if I can't defeat Chicky Starr I have to retire from wrestling, I'm well aware of that. And I don't know how to do anything else Savinovich. The only thing I know how to do is wrestle, I don't know how to do anything else. That means if I don't defeat Chicky Starr, what am I going to do to support my family? What am I going to do? I have a daughter, like all of the people in Puerto Rico (know), who is one and half years old. That girl has to be supported and has to be sent to school. Then, the only thing I know is wrestling. I cannot permit at all that those 15 minutes go by, because it's not just my livelihood in wrestling, it's my daughter's well being that's at stake, who is one and half years old. That's how I know..., even the hairs on my arm are standing up talking to you about this. Because the last thing on my mind is retirement. And I know that 15 minutes is not that much time, but Savinovich, you can do a lot in 15 minutes. And that day, the 20th, which is a very big day, I'm only going to have one thing on my mind and that is my daughter who is one and a half years old.

(Invader's voice starts breaking as he gets emotional)

Inv1 (8:27): And one thing I guarantee you Savinovich, no matter what I have to do, but I have to beat Chicky Starr in those 15 minutes. Because I have to slap on that sleeper, and no matter what I'm going to put it on him. Because when he wakes up, he's going to find himself without hair on his head.

HS (8:46): Friends, uhh, it would be useless to say anything more about this situation, and about the importance of this match. Unfortunately my opinion must remain neutral on this program, I cannot give an opinion even as a human being that I am. May the best man win is my final comment on this feud between Invader 1 and Chicky Starr.

I'll follow up with some comments about the match in the thread. On a sadder note, the daughter Invader 1 talks about at the end of the interview is the one that would drown the following year.

I feel like my whole life has been building to this match from 30 years ago. This is a 15 minute time limit match. Invader I is wearing the mask when he comes out. Chicky is a totally smug looking bastard. Like Rick Rude and Magnum TA with Tully Blanchard’s body. Invader cuts a promo before the match and I don’t know what he says but its awesome. Bell rings and Invader goes right at him. He gets a 2 count on a small package right away and Chicky FREAKS the fuck out. He tries to run away but Invader grabs him by the hair and drags him back over and into the ring. Chicky tries to bail on the other side. Invader tries a backdrop and Chicky kicks him and bails out and hides under the ring! YESSSSS! This is so great already. Invader goes under the ring and drags him back out, throws him in the ring and starts slapping the shit out of him before kicking him in the balls. The crowd goes insane. This is so much fun. Invader keeps going for rollups and pin attempts to end it.

Ok. No bullshit. Chicky firing back a few punches and then kicking Invader in the balls as hard as he can then wiping his hands smugly and looking around while pointing at a fake watch to check the time remaining with THAT LOOK on his face is the best thing that’s ever happened associated with wrestling.

CROWD GOES INSANE rooting for Invader when Chicky is on top. INSANE. This is so great. When Invader hits the clothesline at the 6 minute mark. Damn. Chicky tries to run away but Invader grabs him by the hair and slams him down. Invader’s comeback leading to a Figure 4 is great with the figure 4 getting a HUGE pop but Chicky is too close to the ropes. Chicky tries to run away again but Invader cuts him off. Chicky manages to slip away and there is a huge pop as Invader drags him back. This is like the best Kerry von Erich vs Michael Hayes match only if Kerry was like the 15th best wrestler of all time. Sleeper by Invader is great. I really had to stop reviewing this because I was having so much fun watching the match. The closing minutes are incredibly dramatic and heated. This is one of those million billion stars matches. Top 5 contender. Even on this fucking set.

I expected to absolutely love this one but I honestly didn't find it to be as heated or compelling as other matches on the set. Despite that there were still great moments:

Invader getting a small package and a backslide leading to near falls each time were a couple of very dramatic moments.

There have been so many low blows on this set that they can lose their impact a bit, but there is a moment when Chicky hits Invader with a shot down below so brutal looking that it made me cringe.

The best part of the match for me was Starr choosing to go and hide under the ring rather than fight. That was genius! In fact I think that might be my favourite single moment of the set so far. Such an amazing cowardly heel move.

Context of the stipulations for this match is key. The stipulation was that Invader had to beat Chicky within the 15 minute time limit or else he had to retire. However, Chicky didn't need to win the match, all he had to do was make sure Invader didn't win in the 15 minutes. In the weeks leading up to the show, Chicky had declared on TV that all he wanted was for Invader's career to end and had promised/threatened to run all over the ring, the stadium, the parking lot, get in a car and drive off, whatever it took, to outlast Invader and made sure he retired. Chicky wasn't looking to win or lock up with Invader, he comes into the match with the intention of wanting to run out the clock.

  • 1 month later...

I've added a lot of context in the first post of the thread. Here is my recap of the match:

A feud that has been going on for 21 months comes to a head tonight. This is one of the main events from Aniversario 87, emanating from three locations on the same night. This is the career vs. hair match with a 15 minute time limit. There must be a winner. If Invader 1 is not able to win the match in the 15 minutes, he must retire. If Invader 1 defeats Chicky Starr within the 15 minutes, Chicky loses his hair.

Chicky is out first and the fans boo and throw trash at him. Invader 1 makes his entrance through the crowd and he is wearing his mask. But not just any mask, he is wearing one of the earlier masks he wore when Invader first showed up in Puerto Rico. His t-shirt says Say No to Drugs. Hugo runs down all of the stipulations for the match and introduces the combatants and referee Victor Quinonez. Invader 1 then calls Hugo over and speaks into the mic.

Inv1: "Savinovich, I am going to give something to you. Here I have scissors and a shaving machine. Please hold on to this as if you were holding on to your own life." While Invader says this, Chicky starts wagging no with his finger and then proceeds to flip off Invader. Hugo leaves and Invader gets ready for the match.

Chicky was such a heat machine back then. His epic promos calling Carlos Colon a monkey and every other racist noun in the Spanish dictionary really made him the most hated heel in Puerto Rico and in my opinion one of true greatest heels of all time. He was a true crap talking coward. He would insult the faces and when they were going to attack him he would hide behind Victor the Bodyguard or another top heel. I've heard Homicide call him the Puerto Rican Ric Flair which I partially agree with.

Invader #1 was his complete opposite. He was a super over and adored by the fans because he represented the brave Puerto Rican working class and a lot of the fans identified themselves with him.

Before this time period, Chicky was a former Jr. Heavyweight champ and was more of a manager to bigger heels than a main eventer and Invader was more of top superstar in the company, so that's why it's worked more towards Chicky taking a beatdown and him even hiding under the ring early on in the match and relying on low blows to fight back.

It's also why the stipulation works and makes sense -- in the eyes of the fans, Chicky wasn't a guy good enough to beat Invader and just being able to survive 15 minutes with someone so high up the ranks as Invader would be considered a success for Chicky.

This is far from a wild bloody brawl which you'd expect from the territory and far from being an all time great classic match, but when put into context it serves it's purpose and makes perfect sense. This is also a match you need to follow the territory closely and to watch in context with what El Boricua has provided to really enjoy.

Invader having Hugo continuously countdown the time limit over the mic throughout the match added to the drama, but this is something you have to know the language to truly catch. The commentators also bring up the pressure Invader must be under as the time limit continues to run down and he runs out of time of saving his career.

Invader cheating to win was ideal for them to be able to continue to build on this feud even further as it's Invader beating Chicky with one of his own tactics and something Chicky could later use to claim he was robbed.

The post match haircut was excellent, but shaving the mustache and his chest just put this over the top as it was even more humiliating, plus it's what the fans were calling for.

I actually watched this and wrote about it before Boricua (the second time) and grizzlyedwin came in and hit us with the awesome backstory. I felt like I had a decent handle of the backstory and all that already, but not to the extent I do after those recent posts. I'll probably end up watching it again with all that in mind, but my original thoughts were:

Finally the blowoff. I don't think much went down here that wasn't picked up easily enough from how it was worked and the announcement of the time limit beforehand, but Boricua provided some extra context for us Puerto Rico novices anyway. Basically, Chicky doesn't have to beat Invader before the time limit, he just has to not GET beat. If he survives the 15 minutes, Invader has to retire. Invader has to actually win the match, obviously within the time limit, and if he does Chicky gets a haircut. There's your context. Honestly, I wanted to love this, but I didn't LOVE it love it. It was good and parts of it were awesome, but it didn't quite click all the way like I hoped. Chicky saying screw it to actually engaging in a proper contest and being content to run the clock down ruled. His self-satisfaction whenever he did something resembling an offensive maneuver, pointing to his imaginary watch to signify that time's running out, counting down with each passing minute as we get close to the time limit, constantly trying to scurry away when Invader was on top -- all of it was great. And the bit where he just crawled under the ring to hide was fucking amazing. I like how Invader started this in no real hurry even though he only had 15 minutes, being happy enough to punish Chicky initially, then realising he had to get it together as they were closing in on the expiration of time. Then he ran headfirst into the ring post and that put him in the position of having to fight back before it's too late. As a heavily story-driven match I thought the story they told was really good, but some of the ways they went about telling it fell a wee bit flat. The post-match was tremendous, though. This wasn't just a head-shaving. This was a head-, chest- and even moustache-shaving, and Chicky's tantrum would've made Emilio Charles proud.

Yeah I thought this was good but something seemed almost lethargic about it when I watched it. Maybe it was my mentality or maybe something else but Chicky in particular came across as almost bored for sections of it. Of course he had his moments of brilliance too but this felt like a heated moment that didn't quite break out of second gear if that makes sense.

I think that knowing the exact backstory helps a bit here but it came across well enough without Boricua's awesome write-up. I loved Chicky playing to beat the clock and not Invader, that's a very sensible and scumbag move for this stipulation. Invader pulling out several quick pin attempts were all timed perfectly and very heated. The finish with the loaded mask was incredibly satisfying. I would say that I liked this but wouldn't place it in my personal top tier on this set.
