Room 101 - PPVs or TV show episodes

So, for this week's podcast we're doing our third show based off the old Room 101 television show, where we're looking for you to submit one nomination for a Pay-Per-View or episode of wrestling television from any point in time that you personally wish to be banished to oblivion for good, and why you want it in Room 101.

You can be as flexible with the nomination as you like - it can be for one thing that happened that pissed you off, it can be an entire show of garbage, or it can be a show that represents a part of your specific personal fandom you'd rather forget. Of course, part of the argument will be around the butterfly effect of what happens if your nomination never existed, so your explanation will be key in whether or not the panel agrees to banish your suggestion to Room 101.

As always, the best nominations will be read and you'll be credited accordingly. So what show annoyed you personally enough to go into Room 101 and why?

EDIT - The Room 101 - PPVs and TV Shows podcast, featuring many of your contributions, is now available at the following link:

Starcade 1997

Now as you have covered in the past with rebooking shows it would be possible to 'save' WCW from a booking standpoint after 97. However, I see this as where the rot really sets in and hammers home the bullshit of the nwo main events would never change. That main event is one of the worst matches ever in terms of the match itself and what it showed going forwards. The most blindingly obvious thing in the world, a sting squash over Hogan, was not done and he was just worked over very slooooowwwwlllyy by Hogan and then all that bullshit with the finish.

You also on this show fucked up Bret as soon as he comes in. This sets the precident for Bret going forwards not really being used at all outside of one flair match (after which the program was dropped) and the Owen tribute match.

Oh and this show has bagwell and lex go 17 minutes, let that sink in. Surely that is enough for it to be thrown into the void forever.

WWE Crown Jewel

What a rotten display of some of the absolute worst practices of the biggest company in the world. A cash grab of billions for an oppressive prince who cares nothing for the industry and even less for the basic human rights of his people and citizens. It's disgusting that WWE chose to continue this show despite the overwhelming call for them to cut ties with Saudi Arabia and it continues to send the message that dollar rules over all even some basic decency.

On the show, you need only read the results to understand how shit it was which is all I did considering what a nightmare everything about this show was. Opening with Racist American Hulk Hogan coming down to tell us that forgetting the past is okay as long as we get a few brother brothers in. Then Shane McMahon makes reality of an internet joke and gets crowned the Best in the World because screw that Phil Brooks guy. Brock Lesnar continues his reign of terror by burying the hottest babyface to challenge for his precious spot and bringing us back to a world where the Universal Champion shows up six times a year. Then finally four men who should have picked up their ball and gone home years ago to let their legacies lie decide that wrestling 30 minutes for a dead crowd is the best idea. And a few minutes in, Triple H tears his boob.

Hate everything about this show.

This maybe a controversial one, but I’ll say it. WWE Evolution. Much like the women’s Royal Rumble match, in my opinion it was hugely overrated, and the longer it went on the more annoyed I became by how it was presented.

The video packages and talking heads throughout the show became increasingly insufferable, to the point where for me it had the opposite effect of what they were trying to achieve.

The whole show was an exercise in engineering good PR after the backlash against the Saudi show. The point was then hammered home when Stephanie McMahon (sorry, all of the women) came out at the end of the show to take in their applause. Rather than being brave enough to have the show be judged on its own merits, forcing the crowd to give them a standing ovation and tell them how good and progressive they are just reeked of desperation.

Outside of the video packages and the curtain call, WWE could barely be bothered. A ‘stripped back’ set and an uninspiring card gave this nothing more than a lazy house show vibe. Only one match was actually any good. The six woman tag has probably happened on Raw every week since the show. Nikki Bella comes back to main event (because of course she does) and then disappears again. And nothing quite says ‘Evolution’ than the retired Trish and Lita going over the current main roster performers in the opening match. The whole thing was lazy, predictable and safe and encapsulated WWE in 2018 in a nutshell.

This actually could have been something special and interesting if they put some thought and care into it. Instead nothing of any consequence happened on the show, nothing was progressed and it’s almost as if it never happened. It was simply an exhibition, a make good to the women, and nothing would have changed if the show didn’t exist. Plus G probably thinks this is the greatest show of all time, so that’s reason enough to put it in.

And the worst thing about KOTR 95 is that it's entirely skippable (unless you're marathoning ppvs) since NOTHING of consequence (outside of Mabel/Diesel) happened at that show. Even the main event is just a throwaway tag match. And on that note, throw the Hog Wild/Road Wild ppvs in there as well. Some decent matches aside (ie, Benoit/Malenko, Jericho/Juvi), those were essentially glorified  house shows  with free admission and nothing important happening (im tempted to put BATB 95 in there as well).

I'll throw in Mayhem '99. It's the first fully Russo WCW PPV and it's absolutely horrid. Plus, if you toss it out, maybe that means Russo never got the book in WCW. The company probably would have died anyway, but it might not have died so horribly.

I've never actually seen the show, but being a fan around that time, I remember being pleasantly surprised. The Mayhem tournament had been something of a disaster with little to no action or storylines to make it engaging. It coming down to Bret/Benoit felt a little out of left-field but also felt like a huge breath of fresh air. The match from what I understand pales in comparison to the Owen Tribute match, but I'm sure is still worth the watch.

For me, I'd easily scrub Starrcade '99 from existense. Outside of the Jarrett/Benoit match, nothing good came out of the show and the stupid Montreal finish maybe the worst finish to a major show in history. The rest of the show was hardly better, they had this dumb powerbomb match between Sid/Nash where they had a ref bump so Nash was able to claim he executed a powerbomb without doing so. I'd seen plenty of bad episodes of Nitro up to this point, but as the big season finale, this was the show that convinced me WCW wasn't worth my emotional investment.

Royal Rumble '14 is another candidate. Not only did you have that disaster of a Rumble, but because the Cena/Orton match which the WWE had been teasing for years utterly bombed. I've never seen a crowd reject a match like that before, not even Goldberg/Brock was that bad. On top of that, of all the teams, you had the Outlaws beating the Rhodes brothers for the belts on the Kickoff show. The Rhodes brothers had something special and they were never the same after that match. The only redeeming thing on the entire show was Bryan/Wyatt which is easily Bray's best ever singles match, but even then, the timing couldn't have been worse.

Honestly I didn't think even Benoit/Bret was that good, the work is good of course but you've got Malenko, Nash, Hall, and Goldberg all running in so it's kind of just this big schmozz. Just to name the biggest problems, the Harris Brothers are all over the show, there's a match built entirely around Torrie Wilson getting beaten up by men, Ed Ferrara does an unbelievably long Oklahoma bit, and you've got the all time low moment of Kimberly Page offering to blow David Flair so he doesn't murder her. Starrcade '99 is nearly as bad but at least you had that Benoit/Jarrett match to slightly redeem it.

The Hogan title win in '96 is pretty important, as it's the night they spray paint the belt. ('97 a bit less so.)

That does sound awful. The rest of the card sounds on par with Bagwell/Hennig, Berlyn/Vampiro and Meng/Luger sounding awful from the reviews I read.

The problem with that ladder match is that WCW rendered it meaningless 24 hours later by booking a rematch and reversing the result. Before the match even had time to garner a legacy, it was rendered moot by terrible booking.

What really gives Starrcade '99 the edge is Bret's premature retirement. Not only was it a shame to lose one of the greatest of all-time, but it was catastrophic for the company. It set off a chain of events where Russo was fired for suggesting Tank Abbott as WCW Champion, which led to Sullivan assuming power, which saw Benoit, Malenko, Saturn & Eddie all walk out at the same time. Whatever appeal WCW had left over the WWF, was gone.
