David Mantell Posted September 10 Report Posted September 10 WTF? How long has this trendy behaviour been going on and who started it?
Ma Stump Puller Posted September 10 Report Posted September 10 Blame Quackenbush, it got popular in Chikara.
Timbo Slice Posted September 10 Report Posted September 10 I imagine it also became something to not have to engender it with “6-man”. “Men’s trios” or “women’s trios” and the like.

This, and also AEW made it popular since TK is obviously a lucha fan. Funny enough, they still call the ROH titles "six man".
David Mantell Posted September 11 Author Report Posted September 11 It was Triple Tag in British Wrestling (so that's the name I grew up with) and Catch A Six in French Catch.

MikeCampbell Posted September 11 Report Posted September 11 You can probably blame Mike Tenay for popularizing the phrase on this side of the Rio Grande.
Blehschmidt Posted September 11 Report Posted September 11 5 hours ago, David Mantell said: Ah yes. That silly masked commentator. I might have known. TK is Tony Khan who owns the promotion. Excalibur is the masked commentator, and he is really quite good. But since you just like to spout off Cornette talking points when it comes to AEW, you'll never be convinced of that.
David Mantell Posted September 11 Author Report Posted September 11 I don't think Khan himself popularised it, but Excalibur saying it and it catching on with their viewers makes sense.
Chess Knight Posted September 11 Report Posted September 11 To be honest it's a pet peeve of mine when people do that, and I avoid doing it, but its also ultimately harmless I guess.

Dale Wolfe Posted September 13 Report Posted September 13 Think I had the ROH trios tournament dvd from 2005 at one point, think that was quite good at the time

Jmare007 Posted Sunday at 06:15 AM Report Posted Sunday at 06:15 AM Yeah, as a latino I could give two shits about it being called a trios match instead of a 6-man tag. Like, who fucking cares
David Mantell Posted Sunday at 02:36 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 02:36 PM 12 hours ago, strobogo said: What could possibly be aggravating about that lmao It reeks of trendiness. It's something hip and fashionable to do in certain circles. Especially if you have other territories which have their own name for six man tag and someone calls it Trios in that context. I can understand someone saying six man tag if that's the only term they know but calling a Triple Tag Match off World of Sport or a Catch A Six off Antenne 2 in 1985 a "Trios" has a really snooty air to it.
Blehschmidt Posted Sunday at 06:42 PM Report Posted Sunday at 06:42 PM Almost as snooty as that post you just wrote.
David Mantell Posted Sunday at 08:01 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 08:01 PM I never call babyfaces in America "Bons" or "blue eyes" or heels in America "Mechants". Although anyone who insists on calling babyfaces outside America "tecnicos" is digging their own grave if they ever use that term in reference to Ultimate Warrior, Uncle Elmer, Big Daddy, El Gigante ... 😆
PeteF3 Posted Sunday at 09:06 PM Report Posted Sunday at 09:06 PM Tecnico and rudo are kayfabe terms, though. The graphics and chyrons will spell out what alignment a luchador is. "Trio" is also not an exclusive Spanish word.

I've no idea if the CIC in Spain even held six man tags but they called tag matches Catch a Quatro, a literal translation of the French Catch A Quatre so I expect they would have used the term Catch A Seis. "Les Bons et Les Mechants" is also a kayfabe term, idiomatically "The Goodies and The Baddies"
PeteF3 Posted Monday at 03:35 AM Report Posted Monday at 03:35 AM 3 hours ago, David Mantell said: Trios until relatively recently was an exclusively Lucha term. This pedantic arguing is setting me on edge. I think I'll relax by listening to the soothing folky sounds of the Kingston Six-Man Tag Team, or admire the jazzy virtuosity of the Thelonious Monk Six-Man Tag Team.
Dale Wolfe Posted Wednesday at 07:02 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 07:02 PM I had the dvd of the ROH trios tournament I think, or a rip from one of the boards That's 2005?
WingedEagle Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago On 9/14/2025 at 8:28 PM, David Mantell said: Trios until relatively recently was an exclusively Lucha term. Maybe in wrestling. Its a quite common term in...the world. Like a "pair" for 2. A "trio" for 3. Were you ever a kid? Seen a menu? I'm all for dying on hills but please make sure said hill is actually on solid ground. By which I mean dirt, rock, a foundation upon which a pair of legs can stand.
