Great work from both women here. My years of watching joshi can frustrate me when the pace isn't faster, but these two know how to work a good match and by the end of the match, the pace didn't matter. Really awesome, engrossing stretch run, but the issue going forward becomes whether or not this becomes the way the Divas work or whether or not this is just a blip on the radar. There are very few workers in the division right now as a whole, so something will have to give.

[2014-01-01-WWE-NXT] Sing Off: Aiden English vs Colin Cassidy
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
I hope they give Colin some more screen time because as far as charisma goes, he's got it by the truckload. He also throws the best right hand in NXT. This was fun enough, especially considering he can sing a bit, and it was a nice showcase for him. I'm not sure if Aiden's gimmick has legs at this point, as the joke has been run into the ground and his wrestling style doesn't really match his gimmick, but he's at least entertaining. -
[2014-01-13-WWE-Raw] Daniel Bryan & Bray Wyatt vs Jimmy & Jey Uso (Cage)
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
Match was so-so and I think it hurt some thanks to Bryan getting concussed, but the aftermath is one of the greatest things I've seen on TV in years. -
Glad to see this made the list as the other ones were in chronological order and I got confused. Another great Shield 6-man, complete with your requisite Goldust awesomeness and Big E adding some flavor with his interactions against Reigns and his power stuff on Ambrose and Rollins. I liked that they let Rollins go over here, as Reigns seemingly gets every pinfall or sees Ambrose steal it from him, but the stretch run here was nice and tight. It didn't go as long as you'd want it to with these six guys, but if this were a Superstars/Main Event last match on the show environment, I'd love to see what these six could do, especially now that Big E is being positioned somewhat as a threat and can hang with Reigns.

[2014-01-26-WWE-Royal Rumble] Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
Incredible performance by Wyatt here, who actually outshines Bryan in my opinion. Bryan did a great job working from below early, but the genius stuff came when Wyatt went to work and Bryan made every single one of his moves mean something. Awesome ending, one of the more unique finishes you'll ever see, and although people bitched about the fact that Wyatt went over, the way in which he went over made up for it, because they both came out better because of it. I'm not sure if Wyatt can have that type of match with anyone else on the roster right now, but give him some time to work off what he did here and I can't wait to see what he'll do with someone like Rollins or Zayn or Neville down the road.- 6 replies

Didn't like it that much and not just because there was no Bryan, although I didn't have much faith for it to happen in the first place. My major issue came with the fact that they didn't know how to pace everything out. Punk in as the ironman at #1 doesn't really lead anywhere. Reigns comes in and starts ruling ass, but it was a lot of peaks/valleys-type stuff, but with not enough peaks. The other problem was that outside of Punk and Batista, there wasn't anyone else in the Rumble except Bryan (if they put him there) that were seen as threats to win it. Reigns as a wild card was a nice touch, but at the same time, once it was him and Batista, it was more about wanting him to win than thinking he'd actually win it. I guess that's what WWE wanted in the first place, though. If you bought into Bryan being in the match, then the suspense helped, but it also made the match seem worse.

[2014-01-20-WWE-Raw] Luke Harper & Eric Rowan vs Jimmy & Jey Uso
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
For some reason, WWE Network says it's the 19th. Odd. My favorite thing The Usos do is work in unique ways to tag each other in. For instance, Jimmy gets beat down to start, gets separation from Harper outside, then slides in, tags Jey and Jey flies onto Harper. Their highlight reel tag is that plancha tag that looks great, but I like that they find neat ways to make the tag mean something. Jimmy also does the ode to Brian Pillman guardrail spot in this match, which always gets points with me. Rowan's gimmick lets him be a bit wild in the ring, but Harper outshines him so much it can be distracting at times. He's a great seller in this, though. Didn't like Wyatt's promo mid-match, but it was during a rest hold, so it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. It was fine for TV, but it wasn't anything too special. -
[2014-01-15-WWE-NXT] Adrian Neville vs Tyler Breeze
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
I liked that Tyler got some time to do some offense in the match, as his gimmick is what defines him on TV at this point. They worked some really neat spots into the equation, with Neville pulling out some power spots to differentiate the two guys. Neville has become a lot more polished since coming into the WWE and although he's not exactly a work horse, he does some cool things in every match to remind you he's got some special talents. -
[2014-01-13-WWE-Raw] The Shield vs CM Punk & New Age Outlaws
Timbo Slice replied to Loss's topic in January 2014
I didn't really think much of this. I understood they were trying to break off the NAO into something so that they can get the tag division a rub but it didn't really mean much in the long run, as Punk kinda faded into obscurity going into the Rumble. Good beatdown, I guess, but that's about it. -
My big question has always been whether the WWE Network is going to be a long-term thing going forward for continuous subscribers. They really have to figure out how they're going to deal with content changes and additions down the road. Having the PPVs on there is all fine and dandy along with NXT, Main Event and Superstars, but there's a good chance come August that people won't renew if they don't step it up from a content perspective, which will skew the money even further. The assumption is that the service is a must-have for wrestling fans, and while it's still early, there are still questions about what the Network will mean going forward for programming. On top of that, let's say there really is a big chunk of change waiting for WWE when it comes to the rights at the end of the road. They aren't going to get the long term money that most sports-based TV will get, they won't even get a good number of years. Betting on that money putting them into the black over that time isn't exactly a solid bet, especially with the numbers Chris posted. There's a lot of assumptions being made on the long-term viability of the network having the content to warrant its asking price. The elephant in the room is whether or not the TV rights actually will happen the way they want it to and whether they would go totally in-house for all programming through the Network. That's something that they will have to seriously consider at some point if TV continues to go by the wayside. The recent Comcast/TW merger doesn't help things in that department.

Decided to get back into this after finally getting my shit together with school and the like. Will be going match by match instead of by each disc so that it's easier to see from a match standpoint. Will try and do one or two a day.

And Apple TV. Looks like they're still trying to figure out how to get the updates out amongst all carriers simultaneously.

I love that people still think the pipe bomb promo was a shoot.

Wrestlemania Predictions (It's never too early)
Timbo Slice replied to goodhelmet's topic in Pro Wrestling
Well, if any of the other Divas were remotely over... -
That, plus the Eddie/Rey storyline was done on SD! due to the high Latino viewing population the show had at the time (and carried forward because of it). With the two top Latin stars in the company working a program together, it pulled in some major rankings.

Cox is right. SmackDown! was a "toned down" show at first.

Johnny B Badd / Marc Mero... Time to Revisit his Career
Timbo Slice replied to goodhelmet's topic in The Microscope
That was the Starrcade match, right? I remember liking it alright but they didn't want to give it nearly enough as the other matches in the series. It was almost a "throwaway" match. Plus, they basically missed Badd's somersault pescado after the DQ when they switched to the wide shot! -
Body part work, like any other part of a wrestling match, is a story catalyst. If the story is around a weak body part, the match will be built around said body part. The trick is whether or not the guys in the ring want to make that body part matter or not. Everyone goes crazy about Kawada's selling in the 12/3/93 tag, but the thing isn't that he dragged a weak leg around the rest of the match the moment he got it attacked. It's that he made it part of the story and made the moves that happened after the initial attack make sense. It's not a cliche so much as it either represents the story a match is trying to tell or not. In NJPW juniors matches during the 90's, "body part work" was mainly an introductory period of some type of struggle that ended up meaning nothing at the end of the match because that wasn't the story they were trying to tell. Then Ohtani and Samurai turn that on its ass in their 1/21/96 match, where the ENTIRE match revolves around the body part work of both guys, and it looks to be brilliant in retrospect because they decided to make the body part a focal point of the match. Ric Flair worked thousands of matches where he went after the knee, slapped on the figure four and the leg work meant nothing in the long run because that wasn't the story he and the guy across from was trying to tell. Hell, we just saw Zayn and Cesaro have a match where the injured knee became a focal point, and very few people even elected to talk about the fact that he was jumping around doing the Toyota Roll and the top rope rana. The problem is when the people watching the match at home are left wondering how hurt the guy is because he got his knee worked on for five minutes and that because people sell "body part work" differently (some subtly like Kawada, some over the top like Zayn, tons of others in between) that there's a single way to sell the work. It's never been that way and it never will be.

If Punk is coming back, it won't be to work HHH. He left because he was going to work HHH at Mania and unless something drastically changed on his end (which from reports, it seems like this was Vince and Co. lowering their shields), Punk will be back to work the main event. This fulfills the idea that there's someone other than Orton or Batista working the main event, which, while it won't save the match, will save the crowd in some aspects. Bryan will face HHH, win, and then he'll be groomed for a title run either at Extreme Rules or Money in the Bank. I don't think there's as much of an overlap between Bryan and Punk fans as people think. Bryan is genuinely over in a way that Punk was really over in at MITB 2011 and he's been that way for months. It's a similar situation, oddly, and he'll get a hero's welcome in Chicago, but after tomorrow night, he's not gonna be as over as Bryan is.
-
Seems like the built in plan is him vs. HHH, because the better story for Bryan is him trying to win the title. So most likely, it'll be him qualifying to make it a triple threat match by trying to beat both guys in the same night or something. The funny part is that, of course, Punk didn't want to fight HHH at all. So it makes you wonder if Punk's desires are really going to make him a part of the main event. It's like Foley in 2000.

Not seeing the 2014 Rumble yet on Apple TV.

With Cena as a separate champ, you could have at least had him run on top for a bit, I guess. A unification match at WrestleMania doesn't mean much because WM itself is a draw. That's a good question. I think them unifying the belts the way they did looks like a bad idea in retrospect, and if I remember right, that decision was made to try and give Orton more of a rub to be accepted on top by going over Cena in a "historically significant" match. Now it looks like it all didn't matter at all.

Could a modern era Japanese ace make it in WWE?
Timbo Slice replied to Fantastic's topic in Pro Wrestling
It wasn't about the style, though. He was plenty over from a work standpoint. Del Rio was derided heavily when he came in because he wasn't exactly known as a good worker, yet he took off the mask and became one of WWE's top guys because he accepted his role and made the most of it. Mistico came in and basically had a big head, ran into the wrong people back stage, got injured, and now he's completely de-valued. The one thing I will say going forward that might render all this moot is that there have been plenty of rumblings about WWE wanting to become more of an international presence and that by doing that, they're focusing more on in-ring action, which would be beneficial for a guy like Okada, who has that natural charisma about him and can work well. He'll still have to talk, but it won't be as big a deal if he doesn't talk that much. -
That, plus they didn't have an out plan for Orton on top. They basically accepted him as a flop but didn't want to devalue the title by having it jump around before WrestleMania. They seemed to be locked in with their plan (obvious due to Batista and him still being the title match with basically universal opposition from the fan base) and didn't want to deviate from it. Booked themselves into a corner.
