Early 1984 Dave was fairly energized/optimistic by/about Hogan. It didn't last (to the point where he does his "retirement" issue, what, a year later?). I think that even if current Dave might give Hogan a specific sort of credit, he wouldn't have love for some of the actual matches (let's say... oh, Quake, Slaughter, Bossman) that some of us thoroughly credit and enjoy. I'm not even sure he could understand WHY we enjoyed them, even if we tried to explain it to him. I'm not sure it should have, but I remember it surprising me when Dave liked Umaga and more recently Rusev and Strowman to an extent. I realize they are different types of workers than John Tenta as far as their strengths, though. Slaughter differs in that he had a more athletic peak years earlier and would have always been seen as failing to live up to that standard. Dave did like Bossman at times, but never consistently.

This seems to be a new line of thinking in the last decade or so. I think current Dave would give credit to JYD and Hogan.

I think Dave tried to make an All Japan-New Japan narrative with AAA and CMLL in the 90s, meaning that in the same way he thought the All Japan crew rested on their laurels and failed to adapt or modernize while New Japan trailblazed in the early 80s, I think he sees CMLL workers from 1992-1995 the same way. So they are all going to take a hit. And remember that generally speaking, this is a guy who thinks any change in wrestling style that gets a pop is good change. Wrestling that gets over in the building is good, period, end of story. He's said that before.

The 80s isn't the gimme I once thought it was, and I'm not sure I'd pick it now. I might. But I really like the 90s and so far, I really like the 2000s. Every era has its plusses and minuses. When I think back on the 80s now, I think the "exotic" video quality, super hot crowds, great promos, rapidly changing landscape, and the feeling that I'm watching something that is relevant to the zeitgeist appeals to me more than the matches, even if the matches are great at times. So much more time passed between 1984 and 1987 than between 2014 and 2017.

Dave didn't criticize his 2014. He criticized his 90s.

I thought she was generally credited with being the workhorse of the division, incorporated Muay Thai into her wrestling, spent time in the indies and Japan, carried Charlotte to her best matches when she was still learning, had a fun feud with Nikki Bella earlier this year ... all that stuff. I guess that's just narrative, because I haven't really paid close attention.

And Natalya. Natalya? Isn't she sort of awesome? That might just be my Total Divas bias talking, though, as she's easily the most fun person on the show.

There's also that if they do the title change at Summerslam, there are ways they can keep Joe involved in the top mix doing programs with both Reigns and Lesnar, and Joe-Lesnar doesn't have to be a one-and-done.

I can see many of the more obnoxious hardcore types labeling Cena-Reigns the most "we-don't-give-a-shit-what-you-think" main event ever and rejecting the match outright. The Cena hate seems to have softened a lot, so maybe not. Prediction: The match will be awesome and get nowhere near the credit it deserves.

Both guys are terribly overexposed at this point. I wish Cornette would just talk about history and psychology, since he has so much knowledge and interesting insight, but he's made the calculation I think that what makes him a draw in the podcast world is being provocative. The sad thing is that it's probably true.

Miz has stepped up his game a lot in the last year, but I also think Maryse returning really revitalized him. Here's hoping her departure doesn't put him back where he started. -
I made a long, boring post that I basically erased in which I actually talked about that fact, the whole validation stuff. To me that's exactly what I get out of the neverending argument (from hardcore pro-wrestling fans only) that pro-wrestling is an art. It's simply seeking social validation, or actually simply self-social validation to feel justified about spending sooo much time on that hobby. Because if it's an Art (with the capital A), then you see, it's much more respectable and intellectual and shit. When in fact, it's not. I mean really. It's not. And it's no big deal. I sure don't give a shit about seeking validation because I've spent the last 20 years writing stuff about pro-wrestling. I don't need pro-wrestling to be ART to love (and hate) it. It's great for what it is when it is great. There's plenty of stuff to get out of it as it is. No need to try to stuff pro-wrestling in the Temple of Arts. It doesn't belong there. But hey, if people want to convince themselves otherwise, fine. Doesn't matter. I agree that this isn't something worth anyone being worked up about, even if we see it differently. Calling it art or not is value-neutral.

Maria's Brother Love gimmick? Can't have two Shanes. I forget about WWE's tokenist mindset since it's so behind the times. A shame, since Maryse is one of the best TV performers they have. -

Wait, are they really done with Maryse for now? Why in the world? -
Wrestling isn't like expensive cheese. There is no refined palette. I do think over time, though, if you watch a lot of wrestling, it's easy to become numb to increasingly impressive wrestling moves and gain a higher appreciation for basics that maybe you took for granted early on in your fandom. But that's something different than superiority. I think it's more trying to find the commonalities in wrestling we liked in the past and wrestling we like now. Usually, the links are in the fundamentals.

Carmela's promo was terrific, and I loved how much heat she got. -
Does any footage or photos exist of Dynamite Kid in IWE?

There's also a match against Isamu Teranishi, I believe. Maybe a few others too. -
If all the heat was going to Carmela and Ellsworth instead of Creative, I'd love it. I still sort of like it, if only because cliffhanger controversial finishes that set up a next thing happening are so rare.

WWE would kill to have a midcarder as versatile and permaover as Disco today, you prick. One hostile post too many. Bye.

Every Lee Scott match is tied, specifically those against Sid and heel Lex.
