These guys were still obviously green, but they worked a solidly structured match and showed their potential pretty well. I didn't think this was great, but I did think this was a ton of fun. Magnum Tokyo looked to be the best all around performer of all these guys. Suwa's team was good, but also seemed to be doing a second rate KDX act.

[1998-08-29-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Alexander Otsuka
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Otsuka outworked Ishikawa here I think. Childs mentioned in Ishikawa-Ikeda on 5/27 how there was too much of guys standing there just waiting to be hit. This match started exactly that way until Otsuka took charge and started bending Ishikawa like a pretzel with all sorts of contortionist-style submissions. Ishikawa follows Otsuka's lead there and this crawls its way to becoming an excellent match just by nature of the holds applied. Give both guys credit not just for being great mat workers, but for being flexible enough to take whatever the other guy can dish out. -
I suck at ranking wrestlers. I feel much more confident ranking matches. I am more inclined to do a GOAT match list. Maybe we could do these in parallel. As for me, holes are Lucha Libre,, Joshi, World of Sport, and most shoot-style. After all this 00s Japan watching, I am going to need a looooooooooooooooooong break from puroresu even though I absolutely love it. For the record, I do agree with this. But I still like the idea of doing this not so much for the final ranking but because it will create some fun threads. That said, comparisons of Ric Flair and Bret Hart are not allowed.

WELCOME TO RAW IS...Oh, sorry habit, TALK IS JERRRIIICHO!

Didn't Saturn date Chyna before HHH? -
Three Six Mafia with "Hit 'Em" with ECW clips mixed in. I'm not really a fan of most Southern rap, but this is pretty good. Shane Douglas and Francine bury the video after for some reason.

[1998-08-26-ECW-TV] Chris Candido, Sunny and Lance Storm
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Two AC/DC songs in a row. Sunny is embraced by the ECW crowd with a "Show Your Tits" chant. They ask Lance Storm to come out because Tammy wants to slap him. She gets her wish, but not before he makes a snide comment. Candido and Storm brawl briefly before the ring clears. This seems like a good pickup for ECW at this point since she wasn't doing anything in the WWF and hadn't been for a long time. -
[1998-08-24-WWF-Raw] The Undertaker, Vince McMahon and Steve Austin
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Vince has given Undertaker an end-of-the-show deadline - is Undertaker a Vince McMahon friend or foe? Then Gregorian chants start with the lights dimming as druids bring a casket to the ring. This is followed by Undertaker making an entrance. Fans chant either "boring" or for Austin during his promo - I can't tell which. Undertaker wants Austin out NOW and Vince interrupts him. Vince wants an answer. Undertaker teases a handshake then gives Vince a chokeslam before Austin pops out of the casket. Why I have no idea. Then Kane comes out of the casket behind Austin while Undertaker stands by watching the two fight. Austin is awesome and the build for this match has been excellent, despite all the silly stuff with random fire, the hearse and the casket. The ending of the show is a fantastic visual with the ramp catching fire while "Highway To Hell" plays. -
[1998-08-24-WWF-Raw] Bart Gunn vs Bradshaw (Brawl For All)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Bart Gunn makes easy work of Bradshaw to win the Brawl For All. Had to be pretty humbling for a guy like Bradshaw to get shown up like that. -
Chyna is out to confront The Rock for what he did to HHH last week. She seems to want a fight. The Nation follow Rock out shortly after he makes his appearance. Rock does all the talking and reveals that The Nation backed a forklift in front of DX's dressing room door, leaving her all by herself. Rock accuses Chyna of looking at him with bedroom eyes. He finally tells Chyna she needs to get some, and she lunges for him, trying to knock him off the ladder he was standing on. Rock tells The Nation to get Chyna on her knees where she belongs. He teases kissing Chyna before saying there's no way he would ever kiss a piece of trash like her. Instead, he is ordering Mark Henry to give her the thrill of her life. Finally, Shawn Michaels makes the save with a chair to a huge pop. This was a great segment with Rock being awesome and Shawn's save being a huge surprise.

Mankind again tries climbing to the top of the cell. Refs try to stop him and get beaten up for their efforts. Mankind tries throwing a chair on top of the cell and can't get it up there. When Mankind climbs the cell, Undertaker pulls him down and he goes through a ringside table again. It's obviously a much smaller and safer bump, but it's still a big one. Kane does a dive over the top rope and Kane goes to throw the steps on Mick, but he crawled under the ring. He comes back out with a chair and pelts Kane with a chair shot. He gets out a pile of thumbtacks and falls on them face first. Kane ends up taking a bump on them as well. Austin came from under the ring to attack Kane just as he was going for the tombstone and Undertaker can't get in to save him. Undertaker crawls on top of the cell to try to get in but Vince raises the cage while he's on it! The bumping, weapon shots, hot crowd and announcing made for a surprisingly fun TV match. I don't know about HIAC being used in that regard, but the match was that. This feels like it should be the final segment on the show but strangely it's not.

X-Pac takes a whiz on Jeff Jarrett's boots. Charming.

Mankind is getting Kane in a Hell in the Cell match tonight. He slides down the entrance ramp on a hospital bed in a memorable visual that was in highlight packages for years. He also promises to use thumbtacks. He says he doesn't give a damn if he takes a beating because it wouldn't be the first time he had his ass kicked in Philadelphia. This was a great promo to set up the main event, with Mick Foley embracing the sillier side of Mankind more.

[1998-08-24-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & The Giant vs Goldberg & Kevin Nash
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Last few minutes. Curt Hennig, The Disciple and The Giant run in for the DQ but Kevin Nash makes the save. Luger and Konnan come out to even the sides. There is too much going on in the ring and the crowd ends up popping when Hennig eats the spear and jackhammer. I have no idea why the referee counted the fall. Hogan attacks Goldberg from behind after the match and Nash goes for the big boot but ends up hitting Goldberg instead. Goldberg doesn't even sell it and then fights with Giant for a second. Finally, Warrior, DDP and Piper come out to fight the NWO guys. This is all such a clusterfuck that makes me dread War Games, the opposite effect of what they intended I'm sure.- 3 replies

[1998-08-24-WCW-Nitro] Booker T and Stevie Ray / Bret Hart vs Booker T
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1998
Stevie Ray argues with Booker T. This didn't lead anywhere until Russo started booking. This leads to a scheduled Bret Hart vs Booker T match with the lack of superstar reaction Bret gets in a town like Chicago really depressing me. Bret's promo really felt like the type of thing they'd do during a commercial break, and I wonder if there was miscommunication. Booker's entrance music starts and he doesn't come out. They go to a commercial and when we come back, we see Booker T laid out holding his knee while Stevie yells at him. Stevie ends up coming out to confront Bret Hart and the NWO comes out as well. Bret tries to convince him to join the NWO and succeeds. Hogan can't even be bothered to show up for the recruitment. Bret is trying, but because he's selling something that makes no sense, he's struggling big time. This whole thing was laid out so horribly.- 4 replies

Tony's enthusiasm for Warrior is professional, but doesn't sound genuine at all. I'm pretty sure they remixed Renegade's theme for Warrior, which is hilarious. The Chicago crowd is booing him quite a bit after only one week. Well, this is certainly verbose and long and verbose. And long. OWN ... WCW booking genuinely seemed drug-induced by this time. I don't even mean that as a joke.

Nash says he's determined to run the company one day and tears into Hogan and Bischoff. The crowd is on his side until he calls out Goldberg and talks about being World Champion. Nash wants to make a main event of himself and Goldberg against Hogan and Giant. Does Goldberg really have to do his full court entrance just to come out and talk to Nash to tell him yes or no? What an egomaniac!

While they had been feuding for months, I am surprised that they made this match official so late before the show. I guess they really were confident in Austin-Undertaker, and with that build, I can understand why. Rock accepts HHH's challenge for Summerslam.

This is a high-quality six-man that is here mainly because the result sets up one of my favorite matches of the year on 9/11 in Akiyama vs Ogawa. Most of the All Japan matches we have seen to this point have featured the established favorites, but this has Omori and Ogawa playing a prominent role. You might expect Misawa vs Kawada to take center stage but it's Akiyama vs Ogawa that gets the spotlight. The two seem to already have an issue, as Ogawa tries to take cheapshots at him before the match and their exchanges are particularly heated. Omori is on the green side, and to me, he never really got past that, even when he gained experience. Ogawa as this persistent thorn in Akiyama's side is great. After years of being the guy who gets beat in these types of matches, Ogawa scores a huge win, suggesting that maybe he is on the verge of something special.

Yeah, I agree that Matysik isn't a strong candidate. I just thought the Grantland comparison was unfair.

Looks to be a pretty decent match. Taue pins Kobashi going into the TC match which I'm not sure was necessary. Johnny Ace ends up turning on Kobashi, which I'm not sure was necessary either. I guess they wanted Kobashi to team with a native so they could evoke the Four Corners classics of a few years prior, but Akiyama went from being Misawa's junior partner to Kobashi's junior partner - a lateral move at best and a demotion at worst. The turn gets great heat and is really well done though. I don't think a Kobashi-Ace match came out of this.

I will too. I'm just saying I think they will realize they need to make some changes after they have already done their best WM main event option at the Royal Rumble. I wasn't implying that I wanted to see the match there instead of at WM, just that I predict that's where we will end up seeing it. I would absolutely love to be wrong.

Not really. It's a balancing act. I'm not really out to capture general consensus as much as I am to be as fair as possible. And I'm not solipsistic enough to think all wrestling is created just for me and my enjoyment.

Here's what I wrote about this when screening borderline matches before 1998 was released. After watching it again, not much I would change. Satomura/Kato is also yearbook worthy. I'd put it in that same Joshi For People Who Don't Like Joshi category, since most of this is stiff kicks and groundwork, and it's paced really well. What Lorefice said was that it got a little sloppy toward the end, and I do agree that the last few minutes are the weakest part of the match. But it was pretty tremendous before that. I also think it was lost on him that they were selling fatigue, so he was calling stuff blown that was just getting over how hard fought the match was. Still, I wouldn't argue too much with someone who called it a 4* match. If it wasn't at that level for me, it wasn't far off.

Because Manami Toyota is a far better worker than DDP with a far more prolific career. Just because she has style quirks that I personally don't love doesn't mean she wasn't great at what she did. Wrestling means more than just what I think of it. I could make a list based entirely on my personal biases, but I'd rather make a list where I try to be fair, realizing my personal biases will creep in. Top 100 Wrestlers I Enjoy Watching would look far different than Here's Who I Think Are The 100 Greatest Workers Ever.
