Is it Fine for Someone to Develop an Opinion by Just Reading Results?
Smack2k replied to Exposer's topic in Pro Wrestling
I think this is a BIG ISSUE with almost ALL popular media / wrestling / music / etc... items...if enough people say something is bad, then others will just assume it and never give it a chance. To use your McD's example, everyone I know HATES the McRib and will all say its shit...I tried it and fuckin LOVE it....so their opinions are completely different from mine...but I had to try it out to see it. I think the notion of "enough people hate it" so its bad is a VERY bad thing in society as a whole that has led to a lot or people missing things they may have liked. On top of that, hearing enough people be against something will push opinions in that direction even when viewing or eating it, as now they are expecting bad. I do my best to go in with no opinion no matter what others say and make a judgement, but sometimes hearing enough of one side of things will sway me at the start... The only caveat I will say to this is if you have completely similar interests as someoen else you know and may have dealt with...there, if they are telling you something is really bad, odds are you wont like it...but for something like the internet, where as much as I enjoy reading and talking wrestling, I dont know a lot of people's backgrounds and overall interests in things, so taking all opinions, even if all good or bad as gospel I dont do, until I give it a shot myself.....you never know what might surprise. Take Mid 2000-2001 WCW, most people will HATE it and may give it a few positives here and there, but say most of it is crap...I LOVE the shit, because my interests are different for those shows apparently. I expect to hear a lot of "Wow, I cant believe you said this was good" stuff when El-P gets to late 2000" And if I would have read taht somewhere and not watched it myself, I woudl have missed out on something I really really like...Another is Lucha. I have friends that HATE it, and have told me for a while, its crap. When the set came out, I had that premonition after hearing it so much and listening to the podcast made me still a little unsure. But I am getting it and will give it a shot...I do think hearing all the negativity will hurt me early on watching it, but I will work to get around that and form my own complete thoughts. Opinions are great, and its great to discuss anything...but I do feel that the amount of detail an opinion has should be based on how much of that thing you yourself have seen. In the end, all of this above is MY Opinion...doesnt make it right, doenst make it wrong....and its good to have places to talk about this stuff...would you rather have a place to discuss your passion (wrestling) both good and bad with others, giving your opinions and getting others back, even getting angry at some points made, or have nowhere to go to share it and enjoy it with others? -
I did like the stuff he says about the beginnings of the magazines and the small office they worked out of...some of that was cool...
-
I downloaded it and can toss it up on the PWO Dropbox if needed when I get home tonight...

That line right there makes me want to watch USWA from 94 as soon as I am done with my Canadian / Japanese jaunt....Feuding over a Van / Title / Ring / Jacket...THAT is how you do it!......
-
I agree with your points and am all about giving it time....I think I was just thinking typical WWE ways of doing things and taking the time to do them right...if it goes the way you mentioned...than I am all for it.. Still trying to figure out Show's part in all this....he wants at Steph and HHH eventually, but will have obstacles in his way I'd guess...all good things to come.

Yes, I get that 100%....I just dont like that they arent being featured like they were for a few months in BIG Six Mans with the biggest faces in WWE...hopefully that changes....I get they are in THE Main Event, but they arent really a part of it outside running in and beating up Bryan...they have nothing focused on them...and I just dont like we arent hearing them talk or having them take different people out...to me they feel wasted as the Pitbulls for the Corporation......I could be wrong as things go along.. Their stuff with Henry and the Usos was even a better use of them...But again, I will give it time... Ambrose should be in a feud over the US Title....a belt that needs to be defended...and the others (Rollins and Reigns) are the tag champs....that needs to be defended and have some story around as well...didnt HHH a while back state that the WWE was going to feature tag teams again? Having your 2 biggest second level titles sitting on The Shield and not being fought over needs to change...but I dont want the belts off them to keep them just as hired dogs.....that is why they need put in a different situation...shit...feature them on Smackdown....

For me, the following were things I enjoyed immensely...taken for what they are, 2000 / 2001 WCW (end of August through March 2001) (IN random order off the top of my head) Scott Steiner from the Night After New Blood Rising to the last Nitro (Which I dont count) is fuckin GREAT....he's such an arrogant asshole..sure he blows lines and shit...who cares...he's scary as hell The Goldberg / Steiner feud leading to Fall Brawl 2000 - some cool shit they do to each other. Then the match is GREAT. Power moves and fuckin each other up...the end is a little bad, but who cares. Russo forcing Goldberg to have repeat the Streak to get another WCW Title match or be fired. Watching Bill go through guys is cool and its really starting to make him the killer again Totally Buff - Fuckin great...the ONLY time I have ever really liked Buff. Luger is good here as well in this team. And they finish off Goldberg.. Scott Steiner's WCW Title matches on TV...I like the ones he has with General Rection / Buff Bagwell / Stevie Ray (for Stevie's career). Are they classics? Shit no, but they are fun... Steiner / Booker T Feud from after Fall Brawl through Mayhem. Steiner is awesome talkin shit on Booker and makin fun of him during this to the point you want to hate him...Booker holds his own. Lance Storm - US (Canadian) Champ / Cruiserweight Champ (which he renames) and team Canada as a whole with Elix Skipper and Mike Awesome eventually Lance Storm / General Rection US Title feud...I like this couple month feud and the turns it takes. The end is cool and WCW tries to make it a big moment on the Ntiro after Rection wins it. The Natural Born Thrillers - I like this group of new, arrogant guys led by "Above Average" Mike Sanders (one of the great nicknames ever). Their tag teams are cool and go through several variations. Great wrestling? No..but fun nevertheless, even better when Nash starts working with them in the back...funny stuff. The Insiders / NBT feud over the Tag Titles - Has its moments The WCW shows in Australia - Hot crowds Chavo Guerrero Heel Turn / Feud with "Sugar Shane" Helms. They have a couple good PPV matches over the Cruiserweight Title that makes both guys look good. The Cruiserweight Tag Title tournament...really dumb title idea...but decent matches with newer gusy like Daniels / Air Parris / AJ Styles... The Magnificent Seven - Flair turns heel and gets this group together headed by the champ Scott Steiner. You can see this group coming and Flair's turn, but still the group itself is pretty cool. SCOTT STEINERS WCW TITLE RUN...On pure booking alone, this HAS to be the greatest 4 Month run ever...he puts Booker / Sting / DDP / Nash / Sid (kind of) in the hospital story-line wise. Who else has EVER done that much destruction and not had a stoppage somewhere in the middle...and he does it by cheating, beating them with pipes and then bragging about it the next night...AMAZING SHIT!!! What a dick.... If you are looking for ONLY great matches and nothing else, you will hate this...but take it as a whole, and its really not that bad...its my biggest "Guilty Pleasure" as a fan....

This angle is the main event. Taking them out of it would be a demotion. The angle is THE MAIN EVENT...but its really Bryan / Orton / HHH. The Shield are really there to just kick ass and step back...makes them just a background group doing the COO's bidding instead of the killer group they could be.. Right now, its fine...I just really really think they should split the shows almost entirely..with maybe one BIG thing revolving around both....The feuds can last longer (less TV time for each every week) and we can have more strong stuff happening....The WWE seems to be heading in a good direction finally with some GREAT possibilities....dont want to see a lot of them pushed away due to time available being used to hurry a feud.... And I agree....It's September, if they get to Mania with this angle, I will be SHOCKED...unless it gets to HHH vs. Bryan then....
-
How about Triple H getting his own stooges a la Patterson and Brisco, but the old DX crew? Why not have Dogg / Gunn / X-Pac be their pack of dogs and let the Shield go get back to their own thing... Again, if they could split the shows, they have soo much to use right now that both shows could be really good on their own. It's much more believable when the Shield beats down Bryan as they've been built as huge threats that have had a good amount of success. Having old dudes out there fending off the top babyfaces would be disastrous. The internet would implode. I am with you there...just figure that 3 guys beating down 1 wouldnt matter who did it....and it woudl get hte Shield out of being their pitbulls and back into a meaningful main event level role.

WOW...that interview was FANTASTIC....and I love how Cole brought up his past, stuff with Shawn...etc... HHH is hte best "leader" of WWE ever in terms of character...even better than Vince was (to me) as he looks serious, honest and not over the top....Corp Leader stereotype at tis best... "I work for them...if they do the right things, It makes me want to work for them..." - Fuckin great! Smackdown should be good.

THANK YOU!!!

I have heard on several podcasts that so and so match was #6 or so for 19XX WON's Best matches list. Is there somewhere to find the Top 10 matches of each year from the WON? I can only find the winners online for each year.. Help a moron out!
-
YES!! YES!! YES!! If you could, aside from the starters....dive into a year by year look at NJPW and AJPW as well as the others that popped up...Even if a few years at a time are done...mentioning feuds and great matches from the feuds and dates would be SWANK.. Plus, you'd make cash from it, as you know people (like me) will be salivating to get a hold of a lot of it with more context for what I am about to see!! If you need a newbie to Puro on the show to ask questions or be used to explain things to or just to taunt as I make dumb North American wrestling comparisons.....I am your man!!
-
GREAT show.... ONe question...do you know of ANY podcasts that focus yearly on NJPW and AJPW in the detail that you guys covered the main stuff from the year? Explaning the changes in both companies and big matches that happened immediately took me from interested in Japan to completely wanting to watch it all NOW...

I think the whole thing with Bryan being beaten down in the ring by the Corporation is to make an example of him and do it in front of as many people as possible.. As for the 3 weeks straight of beatings...It keeps buidling things up....to a good payoff hopefully...Bryan isnt Austin so having him clean house all the time wouldnt work I dont think...its where they go from here..I hope Bryan gets some sort of a shot back at them Monday night (with Big Show maybe being forced to stop him again...) but nothing major before the PPV....
-
You're gonna use TNA as the example? Come on man...lol.....just kidding.....but of course that sucks!!!
-
True, but not watching it and reading someone else's opinion (good or bad) and going off that really doesnt help you decide on your own if you like it...
-
Just think...after the nightmare 3-Way at New Blood Rising you are about to hit....99% of the worst is behind you (still got Wargames 2000 to deal with) and the "good" stuff is coming up.....which after all the REALLY bad you've seen will look even better!!!

Anyone else see that when Orton first comes out, stands on teh ramp and raises his arms, it almost looks effeminate? Like he is saying "I'm Fabulous!!". Not a knock on homosexuals either, just funny as it is completely different from everything else he portrays. The rest of him is awesome now though...but that makes me laugh...I went back and watched it again at the end of RAW this week when he comes.... Maybe its just me, but its fuckin funny! To your point Johnny....I never spoke much on WWE over the last 6 years due to exactly what you said...I wasnt watching it fully or investing it it to see everything.....I wish I hadnt seen Orton do that and I hope I dont keep thinking it when he comes out for each match...
-
I think that was it.... Outside that.....sone others are: 2 Lanny Poffo 2 Killer Brooks 5 Johnny Powers 2 Kevin Kelly 3 Karl Lauer 2 Mark Nulty (Great look at the history and fall of Southwest / Texas All-Star) 2 Ken Wayne 1 Paul Orndorff (1975-1988) 3 Rich Bauer 2 Ricky Morton 3 Bll Apter 3 Great Mephisto (EXCELLENT Stories about punching out Roy Shires / running from Police / his time with Anton Lavey) - 5 *'s 3 Skandor Akbar (I think all 3 are 57Talk) 4 Dusty Wolfe 2 Dutch Mantell 2 Dutch Savage 1 Dennis Condrey (Really Good) 2 Erik Watts A bunch of other single ones as well, but I dont have them labeled as 57Talk or not....so would ahve to open each one to tell...I will check em out...but let me know from the above list! Some of them may already be up there, I havent checked the Drop Box in a while.

I will say for the first time since 2006 I am actually invested in WWE programming....I have really been into it since reading the Summerslam results and actually look forward to Monday Nights again...I honestly thought I'd never be back and would only rely on the old school and some Indy's Dylan recommended, but I gotta say its great...Couple things: 1. I have HATED Randy Orton with a passion since he turned face in 2004. I mean the hate that made me want to change the channel, not the hate that makes me watch..In three weeks, that has changed as I really like his swarmy asshole character that is hand picked by the executives as their champion and gets to enjoy the frills of it all and taunt it out to anyone...How long will I like him? I dont know, but damn I am enjoying it now. 2. The HHH / Stephanie thing is GREAT. HHH is back in the role he should be AND he's not only a good heel, but using everything that is said about him to his advantage. I know others have mentioned this as well, but I wanted to toss it in! I honeslty think his role as the leader is WAY better than Vince's ever was, as he is still a guy that can kick your ass, and his approach as the leader in that serious but not over the top tone is realisitc and really makes you want to hate him, the more he does. Making the roster come out to watch the Bryan beatings are great as well. 3. Big Show..I wanted him to knock the fuck outta HHH on RAW Monday, but I am glad he didnt...this can still build and we can see where it goes. I like that they arent just gonna pull the trigger right away and plow through these angles. Will it work in today's "please me now, I cant and wont wait" society? Dont know...but I hope they take it slow to a BIG payoff at some point. The Crying thing is strange...but he's HUGE and if he wants to cry, who is gonna stop him!! Plus involving his family issues to cause his pain makes his pain more real..and when he snaps...it should be huge... 4. CM Punk - I like him MUCH more as a heel, but his role right now as angry and pissed off and ready to kill Paul Heyman and his henchman Curtis Axel is great too... I hope this one doesnt fully pay off at NOC...but I do hope Punk gets his hands on Paul, but another surprise happens... 5. The Rest Of The Show - The "rest" of the show is damn good now as well...the RVD / Del Rio World Title feud is a nice background feud over an important title. Plus Dolph doing his thing / Sandow with his MITB...all good stuff with possibilities....The Wyatts are at a point where they need to do something big as well, or they may fade into the back and become another group instead of the psycho thing they got going now...just dont know where to put it. 6. The Shield - This is one thing that I think needs to change, but I dont know how...I LOVE that HHH and Steph and Vince have a pack of dogs that kill whoever they are told to, but dont like to see the Shield put here and not in a more prominent role....but I dont know where this is going so I will give it time...I hope it doesnt lead to the Shield turning face. 7. RAW / SD - Now is a good time to really completely seperate the shows again, as there is a lot of good stuff going on and if you break it into two, you can really work each out in detail and provide two really good shows....I know some stuff is seperate, but the main feuds are on both shows, which I dont like as much. 8. Daniel Bryan - He is really becoming a HUGE star looking at the crowd's reactions and using him in this storyline will only make him bigger when he finally gets a jump on the "Corporation"... So that's it for now...I am a fan again and actually looking forward to Friday and Monday nights....only negative is that its HARD to watch 3 Hours of RAW and then see the same parts of the same feud redone Friday....
