A feeling out process to start. Savage on the bike.Savage feeuding Herc to do power moves. More stalling, and Hercules uses press slams some more. Savage on the bike. At this point Savage's back has got to be done. Savage has taken a big time ass kicking from him. Savage using the hide the chain for a bit until Hercules gets it and returns the favor on Savage for the pin. The psycholopy of the match is basic, but effective. 2 3/4*

8/14/16 NJPW Kenny Omega vs Goto 4 1/4* This was NJPW going all in on Omega. I loved the grappling early. Goto working the leg early plays into the previous match where Omega hurt his leg. The crowd was for Omega early, than switched over to Goto. Omega is selling the leg. Omega is after the back, and does a fine job working it. Goto goes away from working the leg, and transitions to the neck. Some people didn't think Omega had his leg worked over enough. I didn't have that problem while combining it with the previous match. The drama down the stretch with Omega using others finishers as false finishes was tremendous.

8/6/16 SCI Jimmy Rave/Anthony Henry/Chris Hero/Gunner Miller 4 1/2* This was great. It had hot moves, great action, surprises and history. I loved how Miller and Rave played on the history of last year. The one upmanship on Rave early was tremendous. All the styles meshing as one. We see alliances form and blow up instantly. Henry running wild on the floor was awesome. Hero's payback was nasty. Hero and Gunner Miller were the last 2. Hero put over Miller so strong here without hurting himself. Their was no bannana peel finish. Hero shows why he's the best tournament wrestler out there.

8/6/16 SCI Matt Riddle vs Jimmy Rave 4 1/4* I adored the early mat work. The crowd chanting Bro really gave this a big time feel. Riddles forearms were nasty. Rave stomping Riddle's bare foot was a really fun spot. Rave was just fantastic putting over the danger and pain of Riddle's submissions. Their were so many moments of great drama in the match. The finish was gresat. Riddle has him in the Bromission, but Rave is patient and manipulates Riddle into pinning himself. Essentially, Rave's experience and guile got him the win over the blue chipper.

8/5/16 SCI Joey Lynch vs Ray Fury 4 1/4* Right off the bat Lynch lights Fury up with a leg kick and Fury sells it big. This really puts his kick over as a weapon and something to watch out for. I wish they went back to it. Fury throws down a nasty knee strike. I loved the manager's spot to set up the heat. I really liked we got a shine, heat, comeback, finishing run. I really liked how Fury focused on Lynch's neck. This was the focus of his attack and he went after it. Lynch made his comeback around revenge spots on Fury's neck. I thought this told a great story. 4 1/4*

I think this is great. Since ROH runs San Antonio I can see them bringing CMLL talent regularly on that loop.

This is a chain match. Colon really has a lot of energy and is taking it to Brody early. Brody though is a force and cuts him off. Brody is an animal with that chain. The crowd is so with Colon's comeback. Super heated. A little on the short side, but it was effective. 3*

Freebirds vs Doc/Dibiase This was pretty good.. The Birds were great at stooging and bumping around for the faces. Hayes was really on fire here. Eventually though Hayes is a bloody mess. The faces are all over Hayes. When they cut off Doc, Roberts was super nasty working him over. Doc gets the tag to Teddy and they cut him off and work him over. They get a hot tag to Doc, but the Birds post him and get DQ'd. The crowd was super hot for this. 3 1/2*

I still can't get over that the fans were throwing their belts in the ring during the postmatch.

In 1983 this is a dream match. Both huge draws and special attraction types. Andre is really taking it to Abby. Abby's comeback is very similar to Andre's. This is a give and take brawl. Andre hits Abby with a fence. They brawl in the stands. This was pretty short and sweet. 2 3/4*

Landell is doing a great job stooging for Apollo. Landell's work is very sneaky when he's working on top. Apollo's comeback is full of spirit. The finish was what it was. 2 1/4*

8/13/16 NJPW Naito vs Kenny Omega 4 3/4* What a way to set up the finals. This was some great stuff. Naito just decimates Omega's leg. Omega sold pretty damn good. He had a couple of hiccups that kept it from 5 stars. Omega was great working over Naito's neck and back. All the drama down the stretch was white hot. Then the build into the One Winged Angel was wow. All the groundwork in the match played off at the end.

8/13/16 NJPW Michel Elgin vs Nakajima 4 1/4* These guys really told a nice story. Nakajima is all over that arm. Just wearing out Elgin's shoulder with kicks. Nak is just working over the arm. A big German into the corn sparks an Elgin come back. I really liked Elgin's selling here. The story was their and it just upped the drama. Elgin was great at timing his comebacks, and mixing in his power spots.

8/11/16 CWC Kota Ibushi vs Cedric Alexander 4 1/2* This was an incredible match. This thing just built and built and built. The crowd was totally into this in a way that was organic. This had a raw emotion that is really hard to do in today's wrestling. Both guys were tremendous in this.

8/6/16 NJPW Okada vs Ishii 4 1/2* I thought this was awesome and the 2nd best match of the tournament. These guys were great at meshing what each one does best. Ishii's clothesline seemed stiffer than usual. Okada focusing on the neck. Okada really is a paint by the numbers wrestler. I loved the stiff as fuck chop by Ishii on Okada's Rainmaker pose. I loved the DVNB by Okada. This match was really heated. Ishhi's Superplex was just incredible. By the time they built to the finish I'm sucked in.

Totally agree Matt. This is a cage match and is worked how you're suppose to work a cage match. It starts off with a little shine for Doc. Hayes quickly puts Doc into the cage a couple of times. Hayes gets the brass knucks and just bloodys up Doc. He's working the cut like any good pro wrestler would. So Hayes focus is the cut. We even see a bulldog from him. Again the focus is on the cut. Doc fights back, and now Hayes is tasting the cage. He's all bloodied up and now Doc is punching the holy hell out of the cut. He's grating Hayes forehead onto the cage. Doc Finishes him off with a flying shoulder block. Now Gordy enters the cage and he is beating on Doc. Dibiase enters the fray to even the odds up. Their are belts being used which looks to set up a Country Whipping match. The crowd was insane for the post match. Everything made this a great segment. 4*

Gilbert vs Tatum I love both of these guys. I thought it was going to be more hate filled. Still this had some great punches in it. I liked Gilbert's arm work, but Tatum's was even nastier. I loved the post match brawl with Missy and Journey super heated. Then Missing Link is out, but OMG comes out and lays him out. This post match was awesome.

Gran Apollo had a look of a star. Steinborn is a really good worker who I need to see more of. All his stuff holds water. This was a good solid match. No real bells or whistles. Just good stuff. 2 1/4*

I enjoyed the opening sluggfest with Tully's bump to the outside as the payoff. Again Tully loses a sluggfest. Tully is bumping big for Colon. Tully using his weight on Colon.I'm digging the brawling by the fence. Colon throws a nice headbutt. Colon starts to work the leg to soften it up for the Figure 4.Overall, I enjoyed this. 3 1/4*

The actual bit from the Observer. Kit Parker, who produced the Wrestling Gold DVD's that I announced with Jim Cornette in the 90s, is releasing "Houston Wrestling Spectacular," which will be DVD releases of some of the best matches from the Sam Houston Coliseum in the 70s and early 80s. Scott Williams was instrumental in picking out the best matches from the era for the DVD, which will include the much-talked about Johnny Valentine vs. Wild Bull Curry match which looks almost like an MMA fight due to the amazing work of Valentine, before a gimmicked pro wrestling finish.

They mentioned in the Observer that the Wrestling Gold guys are going to be doing a Houston DVD. I'm assuming they are working some deal out with Bruce. It just seems that news broke, that we haven't gotten an upload.
