Absolutely. The ability for the player to create characters was a huge step forward in making things more interesting. -
Vince McMahon's Amusement
flyonthewall2983 replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in Pro Wrestling
My choice is oddly enough, another Brit, Danny Huston. If ever a film is made of his life, Montreal would have to be the climax. If you look at how ruthless he was behind the scenes as a juxtaposition of his on-screen persona it's almost like the SNL sketch of Reagan playing up his dopey image in front of the cameras but is cut-throat when it comes to substance. Montreal was the first crack of that bubble that would shortly be burst by nearly half a year later from that. -
That reminds me of the last time I saw Ann Coulter on Bill Maher's show. With every ridiculous thing she said, it was clear there was a segment of the audience that was her plants that rooted respectably to wildly, which was quite odd to watch. If he didn't, Sean should have grilled him on his "blatant fake wrestling matches" quip. For example, asking if he felt there was a way to just get rid of matches altogether.

I brought this up once before, but it didn't take off, but if you could cast any actor (alive or dead) to play Vince, who would you? -
What Would It Take To Form a True No. 2 Company To Rival WWE
flyonthewall2983 replied to Bob Morris's topic in Pro Wrestling
The first part of that is mentioned on The Rise And Fall Of WCW, I think by David Crockett. And Flair hinted in his shoot interview that it almost bankrupted Vince anyway, without going into detail about it, so if that's true Vince probably choked on it a bit too. -
I saw it a few weeks ago on YouTube, for probably the first time since it aired. Bret's sportsmanship, and even the fact that there was such a thing in 90's WWF was rare. Another perfect example of why he was the right guy during this trying time for the company.

The body language between Hulk and Randy here would have been interesting to watch, considering how badly their friendship had deteriorated a year later. It must have been really icy even then because Hulk and Randy were in the Royal Rumble match around a week before this match, and in the ring for quite a bit of the same time but probably didn't even look at each other.

Vince McMahon's Amusement

There's a dark squash match on a Smackdown he did as Earthquake in late '01. I think they were going to put him in the '02 Rumble as a suprise entrant, which would have been cool. -

Tenta had some really good mic skills as Earthquake. I loved the ones where he'd be doing his jumping thing and whoever was interviewing was scrambling to get the mic up close. It's really sad he never had a long-term program with Yoko when he was champ. -

You've just reminded me of that and it could possibly have worked just as well... Ugh, I'm glad they didn't. It's bad enough towards the end that he was jobbing out to Kane and Mark Henry, but to see him re-branded with something too comfortably close with Mantaur would have been the shits. -
Linda McMahon for Senate catch-all thread

Exactly. It's no surprise to me they waited until she ran again to open this scab. It's not something I remember brought up very much in 2010. -
Linda McMahon for Senate catch-all thread
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
They'd probably be more accurate in saying it was misogynist, with special consideration for the product a decade ago. I'm glad the "Trish walking around like a dog" bit is biting Vince and everybody in the ass now, but a more coherent and comprehensive argument could be made for so many other examples going back to Ultimate Warrior smacking Sherri around back in '91. "Pornographic" is a buzzword the opposition wants to use with crusty middle-aged prudes who probably didn't know who Linda was before she through her name in. -

Well, Cena said he'd go into Miami WWE champion and that didn't happen either. In all honesty, I can't see him hold on to the title for more than a couple of months so I'd expect him to win at the Royal Rumble and drop it to whoever in Jersey. -
Vince McMahon's Amusement

Well, to be fair the "Big Van" part of the moniker was already gone as early as '93. Jim Cornette said Vince wanted to rename him Mastodon. -
[1995-11-26-WCW-World War III] Battle Royal
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in November 1995
I always thought this was a good concept for WCW at the time because it showed the depth of their roster. It's a little flawed because there is so much going on, it's asking way too much of your average wrestling fan's attention span. Having the three broadcast teams was helpful in this regard, although the execution of it was akin to putting a Band-Aid over a gutshot stomach.- 14 replies

Someone on YouTube commented during the end, it looked like they cut away to Jesse and Tony from Sags throwing up. I bet Heenan not being out there had something to do with his bad neck and not wanting to get knocked around accidentally.

It all makes me wonder when the well is going to run dry. I don't know how much money is going into Linda's campaign, but if the Brock thing goes bust which a few of us can agree that it is already heading in that direction on top of another failed run for office, it's all going to add up somewhere. The push for the TV network ultimately failing? "Wrestle-rainia"?

Scott Hall talked about how when he was pitching his idea for what eventually turned into Razor Ramon, he floored Vince with lines from Scarface done verbatim, later to find out that he'd never seen the movie. -
That is what really killed him in WCW, is that he was untethered every week on Nitro and not guided by someone like Vince who probably knew the character better than Jim did.
-
I really liked the match he had on Raw with Flair, simply because it was Hogan and Flair having the match they had quite a few times in WCW to a WWE audience (and I distinctly remember this being the first show they did after the name change).
-
I heard the first part of that a few times. It wouldn't have surprised me, as it would have fit bringing back the Blue Blazer character as a goof on 80's babyfaces.

[1994-05-22-WCW-Slamboree] Terry Funk vs Tully Blanchard
flyonthewall2983 replied to Loss's topic in May 1994
According to Tully's shoot interview, he took the match thinking it was going to lead to a job and for whatever reason once he got there it was looking like Terry was going to get that spot instead. And once he got wind of the situation, he made it known he wasn't happy about it and pissed pretty much everyone off. So if it felt like a burial, it probably was one.- 11 replies
