[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Akira Maeda vs Tatsuo Nakano
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Nakano was totally awesome in this match, the crowd is going apeshit chanting his name and he is cheap shotting the fuck out of Meada, hedbutting him on the break, constantly kicking and kneeing him in the back of his head, totally leaving it in the ring against the king of the mountain. But man fuck a Maeda, he completely sleepwalks through this, Nakano is working his ass off, but Maeda never really sold, never really seemed to get angry when he got cheap shotted, never seemed to worry when he was knocked down. Totally sandbagged the match, which is two shows in a row, he worked Funaki and Suzuki in the next two shows, those are going to be tough to swallow unless Maeda woke up.- 12 replies

[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Nobuhiko Takada vs Yoji Anjo
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
It has been kind of a chore to get through these undercard UWF matches, I am hoping the Fujiwara sundae makes up for the overcooked Takada boiled chicken. Some nice kicks here and there, and some moments of fire by Anjoh, but this wasn’t good. -
[1990-04-15-UWF-Fighting Area] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Kazuo Yamazaki
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Not a Fujiwara classic, but match of the show for sure. This is Yamazaki’s big win, so Fujiwara worked from the top more. This also had a lot of dueling leg work, with Fujiwara really struggling and cranking for each submission. Yamazaki was landing a lot of body blows which Fujiwara sold with some of his awesome drooling sells. Still this was a match with a similar story to Nakano v. Maeda and Nakano was way more demonstrative and energetic then Yamazaki. I liked the post match show of emotion by Yamazaki, but it felt like I needed more of that in the match.- 18 replies

[1990-01-16-UWF-with '90] Kazuo Yamazaki vs Yoji Anjoh
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Yamazaki was in my top OJ 80’s ballot match, and some of my least favorite matches on the set. This may be the period he started to get good, as this wasn’t just Fujiwara dragging by the neck into something watchable. It is also possible that this was when Anjoh started getting really good and Yamazaki was yet again along for the ride, but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.- 19 replies

[1990-01-16-UWF-with '90] Akira Maeda vs Nobuhiko Takada
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
This is a matchup that can be really great, but this wasn’t one of those times. Really listless for large sections of the match, with neither guy showing much emotion. Individual spots were okay, but this felt like they were sleepwalking. They heated it up for the finish, but at that point it really was too little too late. This was the worst match on the card which is pretty bad for you two biggest stars.- 18 replies

[1990-02-09-UWF-with '90 2nd] Akira Maeda vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
This was less of a brawl then their matches usually are, as they seemed more interested in really hitting the mat hard. Of course being Maeda and Fujiwara they interspersed the counter wrestling with some violence. Meada counters an ankle pick with a WOS leg stretch and Fujiwara responds with a diving headbut right into Maeda’s mouth, and Maeda counters a leg grapevine by drilling Fujiwara in the mouth and then the back of the head. Fujiwara is truly the master of the wrestling finish, as they basically switch the awesome finish of the Miyato v. Suzuki match, with Maeda using the choke to counter the ankle pick. This wasn’t their best match against each other, but fuck that is such a high bar.- 14 replies

[1990-02-27-UWF-Road] Nobuhiko Takada vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Incredible match, ranks up with the great virtuoso Fujiwara performances. Fujiwara worked this match as a wily veteran who is going to need to use style and guile in the face of a physically stronger, more athletic younger opponent. In the early part of this match, Fujiwara was completely defensive, subtly moving and blocking Takada’s shots so they never landed flush, he really reminded me of how James Toney would roll his shoulders and catch punches on his arms. Takada however eventually began to overwhelm his opponent with his activity and power. Fujiwara was still catching his body kicks, but they was more impact as he caught them, he was still blocking the head kicks, but just a second slower. It really looked like that despite all of his skill, he wasn’t going to be able to win this one. As the shots started landing, Fujiwara started dancing and taunting, the way a fighter will smile when he gets hit with a good shot. He knew his time was running short, and he needed to taunt Takada into making a mistake. Finish was awesome, Takada is chasing him around the ring, landing big shots, and he grabs a kneebar, Fujiwara kind of lies in the ring defeated, and then you can see him muster his final reserves, negotiate to his feet and reverse the kneebar wrenching it with all of his might and getting the submission. The crowd goes completely insane, chanting FUJIWARA, FUJIWARA, and Fujiwara celebrates with tears in his eyes. Really a one man show, but goddamn what a one man show.- 28 replies

That is a really great joke. Possibly the best Fuerza Guerrera joke I have ever heard

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3

He was definitely going to be in the WKO 2012 list. Folks should watch the Derrick King/Precious v. Jerry Lawler/Brian Christopher tag, classic Lawler and the kind of match which would make every old school wrestling fan smile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxp2imB-lXs

For people looking for Memphis style wrestling in 2012. Here is my review of an awesome Derrick King/Precious v. Jerry Lawler/Brian Christopher match, would be right at home in the Mid-South Coliseum 25 years ago. http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2012/08/t...e-cause-he.html

That sounds so awesome. I would rather watch, Memphis style then anything besides great lucha libre

Looks like someone grabbed it and put it up as a hidden youtube file with classical music overdubbed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgOdNO-aY18...player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgayO4ZPGrA...player_embedded

[1994-11-29-WAR] Genichiro Tenryu vs Tatsumi Kitahara
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
Back when I was watching a bunch of WAR, one of the things that really impressed about Tenryu was his ability to work with lower ranked guys. He was a master at walking the line between giving a guy too much and giving a guy too little. Everyone comes out of these matches looking better -
[1992-02-01-USWA-TV] The Moondogs vs Chris Frazier & Brian Collins
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Frazier was always Shinya Hashimoto's punching bag when he was in Memphis too. He would totally amp up the beating Hashimoto style whenever he was matched up with Frazier- 10 replies

[1992-06-25-PWFG-Turn Over] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Bart Vale
Phil Schneider replied to Loss's topic in June 1992
This was awesome, each mat exchange didn't just have one reversal, it had reversals reversed into a reversal. Alot of Fujiwara's signature reversals got modified as Vale countered their initial move. I don't know what the politics of the promotion were, but Fujiwara doesn't job to anyone but he does two straight jobs to Vale without ever getting the win back. This really was the only match where Vale actual looked good enough to deserve to go over Fujiwara.- 11 replies

Would wrestling benefit from one World Champion?
Phil Schneider replied to skinsfan87's topic in Pro Wrestling
You don't need two titles for that. Right now you could have one show main evented by Punk one by Cena. That would draw better then a show headlined by Sheamus even if Sheamus has a belt.
