[2000-02-17-AJPW] Steve Williams vs Kenta Kobashi
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
Doc looks massive here. Definitely bigger than he was in WWF or WCW in 99. This was a fine match. Doc is just reckless with Kobashi. First throwing him face first into the rail and that suplex where Kobashi landed on his head. Not quite 1993 level for Doc but he was impressive as was Kobashi. If this was in full it might have told a better story than the 6-minute version but I liked what I saw. -
[2000-02-13-BattlARTS] Minoru Tanaka vs Hiroyoshi Kotsubo
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
Never seen Kotsubo before but between his Mocha cota hair and the way he throws Tanaka around, I kinda dig him. This match started with both guys trying to go for a takedown like it's a ufc fight and ends with big suplexes being thrown trying to get a 10. I wouldn't say it's soulless but it is kinda boring. No big strikes thrown or anything like I would expect from battlarts. OK match. -
So did Kashin turn on Liger at the end? Otani gets destroyed and Liger goes to pin him but Kashin kicks him out the ring. That was weird. Really liked the Otani/Kanemoto parts of this. They are such dicks that the crowd seems to get behind them. Kashin continues to suck though.

I don't mind the clipping as much cause what's shown is all action with little downtime. This was a really fun match with a nice story. Candy tried everything to beat Aja including biting her on the ass to do a powerbomb. I liked how she climbed the ropes like she was gran metalik or something to stop Aja from doing a splash. Those backfists by Aja are just brutal. The best ARISON match i've seen so far. So was Aja a freelancer around this time to work almost all the josh groups?

This was all action so it's already better than GAEA and Jd'. I know who LCO are but the other two I'm not sure of but they all looked competent and some vicious kicks to the head. Having said that, this match made me laugh alot. Between the constant yelling, the facial expressions from LCO and the trash talk it was hilarious. It's a shame about the clipping though. Good match.

[2000-01-29-WCW-Worldwide] Kid Romeo vs Chavo Guerrero Jr
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
Chavo selling Amway was such a Russo gimmick but he did try his best with it. This match was a decent vet vs rookie match. Romeo I thought would go far but it just wasn't meant to be. Chavo looked pissed a couple times with Romeo being out of position. My jaw dropped at Tenay name dropping Otani. Wasn't expecting that. -
[2000-01-22-WCW-Worldwide] Chuck Palumbo vs Rick Cornell
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
So what was Worldwide by this time, the d show? I remember that it was the last ever WCW show shown on tv after the final nitro. Good rookie match. Weird seeing Palumbo doing the jungle jim steel gimmick. He got better once he turned heel and teamed with Stasiak. Cornell had a good look too but never went anywhere after WCW closed. Too bad he didn't hit the roll the dice here. -
I always liked Kanyon better as a babyface than a heel so or course he was almost always heel. DDP seemed to have his working shoes on so this was a good match I thought. It was a little awkward at times I guess but told a good story and I always love the Diamond cutter out of nowhere.

[2000-02-12-MPPW-TV] Robert Gibson vs Tommy Rogers
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
There's a reason Robert Gibson never really talked during the Rock N roll days. This was weird as he started as a heel then he became the face with Tommy Rogers comes out. Typical Memphis match but it's sad the heel ref bullshit that is rampant in OVW has invaded Power Pro. -
[2000-01-16-GAEA] Lioness Asuka & Aja Kong vs Mayumi Ozaki & Akira Hokuto
Tim Evans replied to Loss's topic in January 2000
I've seen Randy Hales matches in Power Pro wrestling 1998 that had less interference than this. They didn't even wait a minute for the run-ins to start. Just lots of mindless brawling and WCW lack of sense in booking. Speaking of WCW, I could be wrong but was that Sonny Ohno interfering on behalf of Ozaki and Hokoto? I'm 95% sure it was. The hell would he be doing in GAEA in 2000? -
[2000-01-23-GAEA] Lioness Asuka & Kaoru vs Mayumi Ozaki & Akira Hokuto
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
When did Ozaki get so bad? She missed that top rope doomsday splash by a mile. This match was kinda sad. All that interference and no heat at all. Bad match even if short. -
[2000-01-10-Jd'] Lioness Asuka vs Dynamite Kansai
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
Good to see a match with people interfering liberally and bad hardcore action. Brings me back to the late 90's. I never really saw the big deal in Kansai and she didn't impress me much here either. This was like 2 heavyweight women having a brawl that they shouldn't be having cause they are too old. Lioness didn't look too bad. Liked the double stomp through the Japanese table. Finish was kinda anticlimactic. OK match. -
I don't remember Devil being so big. She looks like Nia Jax. At least she stands out unlike Azumi and Ru. I thought I would give Joshi a chance in 2000 but this seemed pretty heatless. Devil was slow, the other two do most of the work and Bolshoi is timeless. She looks the same now as the did back in 2000. OK match.

[2000-02-26-TWA-Total Impact-TV] Spanky vs Tiger Steele (Hardcore)
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
While this is better than the Cobarde match, it's still an awful match and Tiger Steele is one of the worst wrestlers I've ever seen. The announcers reaction to the botched big boot was hilarious. Venom aka Paul Diamond is on commentary and he somehow worse than HBK. Spanky tried his best to make this match tolerable. The run ins were laughable. Especially big Bad john who slipped off the ropes 3 times trying to superplex spanky. I love how Spanky comes out to a different 2000s pop song every match. -
[2000-02-26-XPW] Chris Candido vs Damien Steele (Falls Count Anywhere)
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
I think this is from the King of the deathmatches show and that's why the announcers were talking about the violent crap. I can't get past how much bacne Damien Steele has. So much it makes Scorpio Jr looks clean. Speaking of Clean, poor Tammy and Candido. Candido is full on Terry funk tribute act if terry did a whole bunch of heroin. Tammy is just sad to watch. Less than 5 years earlier she was on top of the world and now this. The match was nothing special. Ends in the darkness like typical XPW. Shane Douglas comes out and cuts the same promo he's been doing for 7 years prior. I like how Ron Rivera can't say the letter "s" so he calls Douglas "dougla".I have a soft spot in my heart for XPW like I do KAW. It's god awful wrestling but it's dirty as hell. -
[2000-02-26-OVW-TV] Rico Constantino & Damaja vs Rip Rogers & Jason Lee
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
Rip Rogers looks so indie in that outfit. Match was going ok until the usual OVW bs. It's ridiculous that this seems to happen in every match. It kills the match and the promotion overall. I liked the Rico Damaja tag team though. They have potential -
[2000-02-26-ECWA-Super 8] Christopher Daniels vs Scoot Andrews
Tim Evans replied to soup23's topic in February 2000
I also liked the match. Both guys are not much charisma wise but they are pretty good wrestlers. Especially Daniels who held this together well. Liked the leg work and Daniels selling the leg after the moonsalt. Surprised this was the finals as it seemed worked like a 1st round match. Got a kick out of shark boy at the end in his mask and slacks. Good match. -
Emilio looks like he's itching to turn back rudo. He's fired up and hitting people in the nuts right in front of the old man refs. Loved Fuerza slapping Niebla and then running into the turnbuckle. Tinieblas being in this promotion just cracks me up. He's so much taller than everyone else it's ridiculous. Should have put him with Silva. Anyways, the match is basically just to build up the ppv I guess. Not bad.

Even for a lightning type mano match, this was disappointing. Casas has not had a good 2000 so far and the clipping of the 3rd fall hurt it. Didn't even get a Warrior bullet tope.
-
Match wasn't much but I like that the Tecnicos actually got some offense and the rudos sold great. Especially Bestia who was bumping all over the place. A nice change of pace from January that was so Rudo heavy. Scropio Jr looks disgusting here. Like 1999 Mick Tierney roided up to the gills with that blonde dyejob. Love it. That angle though. God damn that was amazing. I will always be a Perro sr fan. He was old as dirt but no one has the charisma he had and connection with the crowd no matter what. The closest person is maybe Terry Funk. Wagner attacks Perro and the Perro joins the big brawl and it's on. Atlantis fired up is always a treat cause it's so rare. Love Los capos coming out and attacking Perro which leads to Atlantis coming back out. I remember reading in the back issues of the observer that CMLL was trying to go more WWF like because crowds were so bad in winter 1999. You can tell that here. Great angle.

This must have been before JAPW got in trouble from that MSNBC interview and the commission made them cut out the Hardcore stuff. This is different from the usual hardcore action you would see at the time. Not as violent as something like CZW and even IWA MS. But more violent than ECW and WWF. Louie takes a beating and sells the light tube shots where they actually mean something. The two white guys were pretty interchangeable. I like how they were managed by the same guy, Foo Foo but on opposite teams. Lots of botched moves in this but you would expect that. Good brawl.
-
Montoya in his Raw is war shirt comes out for a "shoot" fight. I guess that's JAPW's version of Last match standing? Nice to see Homicide is the same now as he was 17 years ago. As for the match, I didn't care much for it. Montoya had some decent strikes and Ki had some good offense but it just went too long and even the crowd was chanting "end this match". The post match was the best part. Ki killed that poor guy with the second rope Ki krusher.
-
I love that the name of the promotion basked on the graphic is JAP. Guess they had to change that quickly. I enjoyed the match for what it was, Hit squad killing fools and Charlie Hass not selling a damn thing. I forget who it was but Mafia just destroyed one of the unit guys. Looked like he was concussed from a clothesline and then the poor guy lands on his head doing frankensteiner. Hass no sells getting powerbombed through the table. Finish was wonky and the match went a little too long but it is what it is. Best moment of the match was the little kid putting money in the woman valet's top. That was classy.

[2000-02-25-CMLL] El Satanico vs Tarzan Boy (Hair vs Hair)
Tim Evans replied to Microstatistics's topic in February 2000
It's funny that this has been such a blood feud yet this match had no blood. Tarzan boy's entrance ruled. Then the match started. I won't say this was bad because it wasn't but it was disappointing. Tarzan needed to just destroy Satanico in two falls. Instead, the match was back and forth with a roll up in the third fall. Didn't feel the hate from Tarzan.
