I dislike being in position of Gabe defender as I'd much rather see Beau James book a national TV show than Gabe. But... It should be said that FIP was a very different product than ROH. Same crew aimed at a different audience worked differently for that audience, with diffferent angles for that audience. EVOLVE (at least the first show) was filled with mediocre talent and guys I just don't want to see but had interesting backstage angles and "sports entertainmt"ish stuff and a format that kept matches short.
-
So did I miss the Observer where he praised a Ken anderson v Angle match as Anderson's career best match? I remember Meltz praising an OVW match opposite CM Punk and at least one of the Batista and Undertaker matches. Don't remember the Angle match as career best praise.
-
Isn’t his inclusion more of an embarrassment now than 3 years ago. I thought the story was Brock Lesnar walked into wrestling locker room and saw Kurt Angle a former world class athlete reduced to a useless shell of a druggie and went…”ehh I want out.” With “hindsight” that’s Angle’s legacy.
-
I think Budro and Jason the Terrible should be in there trading belt with TNT around this point too. Assuming that the the Jason who worked those matches is same one from Stampede that Dusty supposedly wanted. than Canada maybe...but Japan?

Guys who are fucking multiple WWE divas are not fucking women with child bearing hips or breasts that you'd want to use to nurse children...unless you think silicon is a useful nutrient.

yeah Blassie. Which is the point. It doesn't matter ifg I recognize the guy as long as I believe he legit cares.

I meant WCW mic work. You don't need Heyman doing big "Shoots". All you needed is someone saying. "Hey I was raised by WCW, these people are my family and nothing will take them away from me." and then be able to eat a bump. Eaton was teaming with Kenny Kaos in 99. He was being used as a joke by Bret Hart in the same speech where Hart mocked El Dandy. Ideally I want the mouthpiece role to be played by a non-wrestler. Not sugesting Eaton as worker but Eaton working as retired wrestler mouthpiece-the equivalent of Hoshino in Makai Club. Or the way that WWF used Killer Kowalski in the Invasion angle. Even if WWF audience finds Eaton as unfamiliar as Kowalski, it still works better than having WCW mouthpiece be a Mcmahon making the whole angle just another trinket in that family feud.

You don't think with good writing David Flair could have pulled off Randy Hales/Mark Curtis level mic work establishing reason why he cared about WCW and was anti-WWF? His Wildsidfe and WCCW mic work suggests that he could pull off something that basic. Bobby Eaton may be lesser mic worker than Shane Mcmahon, but him as mouth piece doing TV title level mic work even stumbling over stuff would be recognized as distinctively WCW mouthpiece. Doesn't require alot of compelling mic work...just someone recognizable as distinctively "WCW".

Did Vince get raked over the coals for Cryme Time? For the end to gay marriage thing? For the MLK tribute episode that ended with face Austin chasing Teddy Long around ring in a ATV threatening to tie him to the back?

There are a ton of handhelds available during the Invasion period. At the start of the angle the crowds are super super hot. Super hot for heel invading Palumbo/O'haire. Palumbo/O'haire were more over as invading WCW heels than I ever remember them actually being over in WCW. As the angle progresses the crowd heat does die. But that really feels to me like the fault of the bad writing and not the fault of lack of name talent. On some level they were hurt by having no non-Mcmahon mouth piece for the invasion. Having someone identified with WCW as mouthpiece means more than name talent in WCW stable. It really feels to me that SMW v USWA needs Randy Hales v Mark Curtis. Fantasy booking Bischoff leading a Karate Army of Booker T, Ernest Miller, Jerry Flynn, Ray Lloyd, Meng a Jung Dragon and some Power Planter's in gis doing a karate army v NJ type type deal would be a shitty WCW roster but would have had a mouthpiece that audience actually buys as repping WCW. I don't know who else you could get for that role. Mcmahon wasn't interested in either Zbysco or Jarrett. I don't know if Cornette,Hart, Mike Sanders, Ernest Miller, Bagwell, Dustin, Anderson, Kidman, David Flair or Eaton could have pulled it off. With better writing Booker, DDP or Kanyon could have probably done it. Which in the end brings it back to the writing. Even with a non-Mcmahon mouthpiece, if the writing isn't good it won't ammount to much.

So wait, let me get this straight. Black wrestler being booked to play the role of a coon=not offensive. Black wrestler turning from face to heel by asserting dignity and refusing to coon for white racist heel=offensive.
-
The angle was used to turn Brown face in Memphis and pretty much any feed that Fuller and Brickhouse worked. I've watched TNA and WWE in the last decade, I don't see it as anymore offensive than face Austin threatening to tie heel Teddy Long to the back of his SUV or most of the Cryme Time, or LAX angles .

Above Spivey?

Who rates them highly? I've never seen any praise of that team...well any praise significantly greater than praise for Hansen/Spivey. Was there a point where that team was highly regarded/praised? What was said about them?

I don't think Dana is going to go after Mayhem anytime soon because he really hasn't proven anything other than he has a big mouth. *If* he goes on a little run of success in Strikeforce, Shields does well in UFC, and Mayhem keeps talking... then Dana will see a $$$ match and grab Mayhem. But right now, Mayhem really comes off as Mitch Green cutting promos on Mike Tyson. It led to nothing. John I'm not under the impression that as a promoter Dana White is half as smart as Bob Arum or Don King. I can't imagine White not promoting Green v Tyson if given the opportunity. I imagine White would promote a Lalonde v Robinson rematch.

Two? Grew up in Dc. Went to shows at Cap Center. My sense as a kid was that DC was part of the WWF circuit, that NWA expanded into and really won. As after NWA showed up I don't remember anyone being interested in going to WWF shows or talking about them. Numbers don't quite match my childhood memory. Again percepetions and memories from a childhood without dirtsheets or internet. I remember when DJ Peterson showed up in the WWF. It really cemented in my mind at the time the idea that the WWF was fucking with AWA, would take anyone AWA was pushing and sign them up to do nothing just to help further collapse of that company.Vince Apollo vs Mike George will be the big feud when they restart, since DJ Peterson left for the WWF. Peterson was already going to leave for Stampede anyway, then the WWF showed interest. It is what was actually happening. As a kid you didn't need a dirt sheet to see what was going on around you. Dj Peterson showing up on WWF TV is a really odd thing to remember really distinctly from childhood. But it was this moment where I really knew "Hey these guys are trying to put those guys out of buissness". So super amusing to me that I was wrong. Dj Peterson was grabbed up from Central States and not AWA. Honestly grabbing Peterson up from AWA just to fuck with Verne makes alot more sense than grabbing him from Central States. The whole Glbert period from Continental is on tape.

This was a period where HHH was trying to attach himself to anything that was over. It was a real problem as WWF has traditionally been good at protecting hot midcard attractions while putting anyone in a program opposite HHH is kiss of death. Also this was deep into HHH as guy who watches lots of tapes and tries to cosplay classic matchups. Eugene was over as wrestling idiot savant who did lots of old school goofy roll ups and Rip Rogers type airplane spin into dizzy axe handle spots. The HHH program had HHH trying to rerun Flair v idiot strongman (rick Stiener) match which really wasn't Eugene's gimmick till that match up.

Someone really should start effort to rename the Won Disgusting Promotional Award the "Stephany Mcmahon terrorism interview" tribute award. Much like wrestler of year award became "Lou Thesz/Ric Flair" award or the best brawler became "Bruiser Brody". The pinnacle to which everything else aspires. It feels like it would be easier to lobby for the name change than to lobby for Orville Brown,Cien Caras or any brit for Hall of fame inclusion.

Wasn't the Ede getting pinned on way out of town (leaving Raw for Smackdown) supposedly a HHH booking idea? Don't remember the exact deal with Booker where he wanted to be in meetings so he could be badmouthed to his face, but I remember there was a bunch of stuff around the King Booker v King of Kings setup and squash that was super douchey. Just to get the time line correct here. This took place after Jericho's recent return to company not the original Y2J intro. I don't think I've ever read anything about Shamrock being feared shooter who took advantage of opponents or was used as enforcer. WWF had guys who were used as enforcers, but never heard about Shamrock in that position. Shamrock was athletic worker who did ranas, he was guy the WWF fan wanted to see opposite Jericho. The complete sandbagging of triple suplex was really obvious since it was near in time to the period where he would fly around for Shelton. Back when WWF allowed for blading; only one match on PPV was allowed to use it so as not to weaken the impact of it (if everyone fights past blood loss, hard to sell anyone wrestler as being tougher for fighting past blood loss). I think it's worth looking at PPVs when HHH didn't have the belt (wasn't in the main) where he was allowed the shortcut of the blade (depriving it of other people trying to get over as main event workers).

I think that has less to do with Vince being mark for multigenerational families, and more to do with the shrinking pool of potential workers with size who they feel are worth investing in.

Agreed, which is why they should either truly moderate the board, or Dave should just stay away from it. Aren't Chikara Fan Dan and Allan4l moderators. I don't think that pair showing stronger control will help.
