It's 18 page thread that's built on people criticizing Gross because he covers MMA/UFC the way a sports writer would cover MMA/UFC. Instead coverage should be based around the nature of the promotional material and the buy rates. And it builds from there and gets really interesting about 8 or nine pages in as Snowden talks about competive top atheltes ( Snowden doesn't say it but I'd be willing to argue that the basic idea of succesful sports promtion is to create the the illusion of competitiveness) while Meltzer talks about music/ wrestling and the creation of stars/personalities (seperate from their actual level of skill set) .

None post Gross yet. There were a bunch pre-Gross during the whole period where Dave was pimping all the sports coverage Brock Lesnar got during the deadest week of the year for sports coverage (Baseball All Star weekend)..and all the way back to UFC 93. I don’t think the Gross one is the best.

Dustin of the day was from 02. One could argue that that’s an old discussion that people still being reflected on today. Thread from February of this year and a thread from May of this year aren’t really “old”. SLL's post is a serious dissection. It’s completely unnecessary and, I think there are better things that SLL can be spending his time doing. But if you look at the old threads that I pointed to "[where] I think I said what needed to be said about the silliness of accusing opinions of being trendy in the Naylor comp thread" , I don’t see anything you said dissected with detailed attention. Your “not so serious posts” weren’t being dissected. They were being dismissed as “not so serious posts”. From Smarkschoice: From prowrestlingonly: Loss said: I pointed out: Your “not so serious posts” weren’t being dissected. They were being dismissed as “not so serious posts”. Your current posts are no different than your “old” “not so serious” stuff. And so again I’m dismissing them and you as not being worth serious discussion.

No one is denying the existence of trends in criticism. David McCullough wrote a really great popular biography of John Adams. This led to people talking about Adams as significant figure and as a model far more than they had before and HBO put together a really great John Adams miniseries. Trends exist. Never said they didn't exist. Read that thread. Read what was written in the smarkschoice thread. Nowhere did anyone say that critical opinions don't follow trends. But dismissing them as merely "trendy" demonstrates an embarrassing inability to actually argue the merits of those opinions.

I think I said what needed to be said about the silliness of accusing opinions of being trendy in the Naylor comp thread. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?show...20&start=20 But worth posting jdw's piece again What is the value in holding onto circa 93 opions?

This would be Diehard Justin Lee postering pics of Nadia nice if my memory serves.

Danielson can work different stuff. I've seen him as a fun vanilla babyface highflying tag worker opposite Rene Dupree and Carl Oulette in a Euro fed. He's a guy with good execution who bumps well. No reason to believe that he won't be at least as effective as Crash Holly. I don't want to see him falling off ladders but no reason to believe that he is incapable of falling from ladder style work either.

Yeah this thread has really long lost grip on reality. Rey works long showcase matches. Even something like Rey v Mordecai went longer than most Rockers matches and they were supposedly one of the "best tag teams in history" made up of two guy who were among the most "spectacular" wrestlers of their time. This whole question of guys presented as technical wrestlers stuff is silly. Technical wrestler is a gimmick. Stan hansen is a guy with a pretty big technical moveset who does a lot of good leverage matwork. But no one is gonna call him a technical wrestler because he wasn't presenting himself as such. I haven't been the biggest fan of Jeff HArdy's WWF/E work but want to point out that the Hardys v MNM 07 summerslam match is really really good. It's I think forgotten because of Umaga v Cena but easily one of better WWF tag matches of last thirty years. That whole 07 Hardys tag period (outisde of the the three way ladder mess) where they working less like a stunt team and more like a tag team has some really nice work from Jeff. I like Luger in tags, like Luger/Buff v Goldberg/Sarge, like Luger/Sting v Steiners, like Luger/Giant v Rodman/Hogan but Luger has never contributed as much to tags as Hardy did during that 2007 run.

Watching the handhelds from the beginning of Invasion, you get the sense that actually worked as crowds were super super hot for all of the matches. Unbelievably hot for what you would think were annonymous ex power planters. I'm not exactly sure when it all fell apart but theree is a point where they clearly overcomplicated stuff and it fell apart.

HHH has been a more or less succesfull anchor for a promotion for almost a decade. Jarrett lacks main event presence or charisma compared to who?
-
Has Angle ever worked a smarter match than Jarrett v Chyna?
-
TNA are stupid and kept the title on Angle but…. It’s only been a little over two years since Benoit slaughtered his family. No one in America will see a guy taking in and protecting the wife and children of a crazy wrestler as anything less than an act of selfless heroism.

Ask him about Amazing Zuma:

It's 21st century wrestling...everyone is disposable. Doesn't mean it isn't a mistake to dump Styles or Weat for that matter.

Bockwinkle v Brody from Houston.Watching that back to back with Bockwinkle's match with JYD gives you a sense of how much more JYD brings to the table. I'm not sure about the idea of judging what a guy must have been like during his athletic prime based on his high end work in his 50s. I dig Tenryu a bunch in the 80s but he's smarter and has way better execution in his 50s and think if you watch the stuff from his 50s first his athletic peak might dissapoint. I love Tamon Honda in his 40s but you would be mistaken if you watched that to make judgments about his ability in his 30s.

I didn’t word this well. And didn’t mean for the metaphor to be taken literally. I know what happened to AJW. I never thought anyone was afraid of Vine punching them in the face. Fear of Vince meant fear of crazy vindictive fickle Vince fucking with your career. My sense was that nine years ago there were lots of strong personalities in the WWE. Lots of talent who were seen as leaders inside the WWE with strong personal vision. Also get the sense that there was more interaction between the support staff and the talent, where you had things like Russo being loyal to Road Dogg and Road Dogg to Russo, Ross to Austin and Austin to Ross, Patterson to Rock and Rock to Patterson. Some of this may be that Meltzer doesn’t have sources as good as he once did, but my impression is that the current talent is weaker (fewer leaders) and that the relationship between the talent and the “staff” is far more mediated to prevent loyalty between the two. It’s a fed that has fewer Chigusas and more Angela Manellis. The sense I get is that the WWE today has surrounded it self with people who have accepted their roles as puppets and not interested in string pulling. People who don’t need to be kept in line out of fear, but rather cause they don’t have the vision to challenge anything.

They're talking about ditching West? That''s insane. also I can't stand TNA but the idea that Styles isn't good at working heel is mistaken.

Ok so I don't watch diva matches and have no idea what her screaming is like in that context but as a manager, live I thought she timed her screaming well. This is years ago but remember being real impressed by how she would sense crowd getting restless and either scream or "accidentally" expose her ass to get restless crowd's attention back into match. Scream when heels needed boos, expose ass when faces needed cheers. Do neither when match was working on its own.

I've seen a lot of Dutch booking and it's hit or miss. Dutch does a lot of bad comedy booking that's distinctively Dutch and lots of slow face turn stuff that's really effective. Also should be said that Dutch left WWC to book for for IWA Puerto Rico which was less "territorial" booking and more hip TV booking with territorial echoes. But what were the things that Dutch was involved in booking that Russo took the blame for? Most of the stuff that got "Fire Russo" chants was really Russo ish booking.

I tend to stick by all that. John Nine years ago I remember talking about how Vince's death would lead to an All Japan Woman type split: with no fear of Vince Austin gets his boys, Taker his, Bischoff/Hogan make a play, Steph/HHH etc. But it's 2010 and an AJW like split seems completely impossible to me. There are no real mainstream stars who are backstage force who I see making play for cash. Fear of Vince matters when there are people who have to be kept in line. Perhaps the WWE this decade has been more Moolah and her troupes than AJW. For better or worse Vince has done a great job marketing himself as the man who makes succesful wrestling in U.S. At this point Fear of Vince is less important than moneyed folks actual respect for Vince. Looking for someone to buy out the company makes sense, but without Vince who is buying?

If your fighting at heavyweight you're a heavyweight. Fujinami in 86 seemed to be about as bulked up as Eaton anyway. -

Jim Wilson is Chokehold author Jim Wilson. Thunderbolt Patterson is Thunderbolt Patterson Ted Allen would be Nightmare Ted Allen Gerald Finley is long time black Georgia jobber Gerald Finley The/EL Mongol would be 60s-70s wrestler EL Mongol? And I'm assuming that The Avenger isn't whichever Torres brother worked as Avenger...No way they're running Torres v El Mongol in 1981? Don't recognize Vernon or Jack Johnson Assassins in 1980 would be Jody Hamilton and someone or someone else working Assassins gimmick? Inferno would be the second Assassin? -
