[2017-03-25-CWF Mid-Atlantic] Trevor Lee vs Chip Day
puropotsy replied to ShittyLittleBoots's topic in March 2017
I watched this last night and rated it five stars, have posted a review and recap elsewhere. It really felt more like an old school Japan match than anything I’ve watched in a while, including matches from Japan. It had great pacing, great intensity and built to an amazingly strong finish. -
I'm surprised there wasn't already a thread on this. I have just reviewed it for my five-star match reviews as Dave rated it as such and said it was the best lucha match he'd ever seen at the time. The match was great but might not translate as well to a modern context considering all that has come since, especially with Mysterio and Psicosis. The dive segment at the end did feature some outstanding spots and the rudos were great at being rudos with triple-teaming. What do people think? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0TMDdVeCrE

Dave did rate this as five stars and said it was better than the Kroffat and Furnas match and one of the greatest matches he has ever seen. I don't think it's as good as the Kroffat and Furnas match but thought it was great. I rated it ****3/4 Dave's review is in the August 3, 1992 Observer, available at this link for those with a subscription http://members.f4wonline.com/wrestling-observer-newsletter/august-3-1992-observer-newsletter-vince-drama-penthouse-false-stories

[2000-01-06-WWF-Smackdown] The Rock vs Kurt Angle
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
Man, no wonder WWF was killing it in 2000. Both The Rock and Angle had their fingers on the pulse with their characters at this point, during the promos and then in the match. I loved how Rock built up to the suggestion of what to do with the medals and Angle just flew into a brawl with him. Both of these guys bounced around for each other really well and I could care less about the Blackman interference, it is great to see footage of guys so in their prime against each other. -
[2000-01-05-FMW] Masato Tanaka vs Tetsuhiro Kuroda
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I didn't really have much backstory on this other than loving 2000-era Tanaka. Kuroda showed some talent for getting the life beat out of him and throwing some clotheslines. The ending surprised me and does paint the match in a different context of the underdog going over. This didn't do a whole lot for me though, other than enjoying Tanaka's dropkicks. The brawling through the crowd wasn't much. -
[2000-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 2000] Genichiro Tenryu vs Kensuke Sasaki
puropotsy replied to Loss's topic in January 2000
Great match. Nothing starts off a hoss battle like a great chop exchange. The punches these guys were throwing were intense. My favorite part was probably Tenryu going for the top rope rana only to get powerbombed by Sasaki who followed up with his own top rope rana. Tenryu easily has the best enzuiguri I've ever seen and furthers that argument a few times in this match. Sasaki earned his stripes here. Great stuff.- 31 replies

[2000-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 2000] Keiji Muto vs Masa Chono
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I liked this, not my favorite match so far in this project but enjoyable. Mutoh seemed to be targetting the leg early on, only to move on to leg-work and then return to a cross armbreaker. Chono's work was logical if not flashy in going after Mutoh's neck. Mutoh's moveset is one of my all-time favorites and we get to see all of it here. The dragon-screw off the table was tremendous. Mutoh got to shine most of the match only to tap out to a modified STF in the end, putting Chono over well. -
This is a shining example of Inoki’s shoot fetish working. The shoot style brawling with Murakami and Iizuka right off the bat was great and became greater when Hashimoto started throwing. The pull-apart built up to a crescendo when inoki and his stick re-started the match. Then we saw more great ground and pound from Murakami and Iizuka fighting out. Hashimoto tagging in and kicking Murakami’s head off made my day. The show-down with Hashimoto and Ogawa was epic, especially with Hash taking his glove off and slapping Ogawa. Their spill to the floor with Hash trying to destroy Ogawa’s arm while Iizuka came back and got the rear naked choke in the ring was fantastic. Loved this.

Takaiwa going for the lariat early and Tanaka responding with a dropkick to the bicep was a nice touch. I really liked the contrast of Takaiwa and Ohtani as the bruising juniors against Tanaka and Ka Shin who had to break into submissions to even the game. Tanaka’s transitioning into the submissions was much smoother than that of Ka Shin. Takaiwa had a nice finishing stretch with the repeated powerbombs and though it got awkward for a second there with Ka Shin Takaiwa pulled out a nice jumping tombstone for the win. Good match.

[2000-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 2000] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This was a fun sprint that I would really call a squash. Liger was just nailing him in the corner with the slaps to the face. Liger’s overhead release German superplex was crazy and it looked like Kanemoto might have hurt his knee on it but it could just be selling. Liger then used the brainbuster to get the extremely one-sided win. Liger as a monster heel is fun. -
[2000-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 2000] Wild Pegasus vs Hiroyoshi Tenzan
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
I liked this quite a bit. Benoit’s chops are crazy as mentioned above, but Tenzan’s overhead chops don’t look pleasant either. Benoit had some great suplexes in here including the superplex and the rolling Germans. Tenzan threw a nice leg lariat which always gets points from me. Tenzan really commits on a missed moonsault. Tenzan winning with the diving headbutt was interesting to me given Benoit’s earlier in the match didn’t do the job. I would think Benoit could have been successful in NJPW as a heavyweight but given that finish I don’t know if they had it in the cards. -
[2000-01-04-Osaka Pro] Super Delphin vs Dick Togo
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This falls quite firmly in the good but not great category. I really liked that Togo worked Delphin's leg with the chair building to an STF. Delphin hit a nice plancha in his comeback. Togo shrugging off the tornado DDT and hitting a powerbomb was cool as was his pedigree followed by a top rope senton. Delphin's finishing stretch with the tornado DDT and the palm strikes was good but lacked that little extra something. -
I thought this was great. The middle portion of the match with Toyota in control made it feel like they were working on a non-title change. I liked the missile dropkick to the floor by Toyota and her two entrance dives a lot. The rolling cradle is always great for a hoot. Hotta took control with a cross armbreaker and then started nailing some suplexes. I really liked that Toyota wasn't able to hit the JOCS earlier in the match but was able to catch Hotta on the top rope at the end and hit it. This was a really solid title match.

[2000-01-04-AJW] Kumiko Maekawa vs Miho Wakizawa
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This actually surpassed my expectations and was fun. I think this is because I didn't expect so much leg-work from these two, especially Miho.Maekawa's single leg crab on her was pretty intense and I liked the head-kicks toward the end. -
Big Show was not very over as champion but watching him work here makes it feel like he should have been. He moved well and bumped great, I really liked when he took the spill over the guardrail into the front row but am glad I wasn't in one of those seats. HHH was a two-time champion by this point and only starting to get over, with the Vince match in December helping a lot. I remember this feeling like the right title change at the right time. The match holds up well as a match but not as a major WWF main event style match, which will kick into gear with the forthcoming Cactus matches.

Watanabe and Maekawa come off as a fun tag team here. The double planchas off the entrance by Toyota and Wakizawa were really great. I loved the Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex/Missile Dropkick combo to win the second fall, one of my favorite things I've seen in a while. The third fall made the match with a fast past and Toyota trying in vain stave off the attack on Wakizawa. I sense from the post-match that Watanabe and Maekawa have a showdown with LCO coming but it doesn't seem to be in the footage from January 2000, hope we get to see it

[2000-01-03-AJW] Etsuko Mita & Mima Shimoda vs Kayo Noumi & Miyuki Fujii
puropotsy replied to soup23's topic in January 2000
This was pretty fun as I hadn't seen an LCO match before. I can see how the style would get old but it hadn't for me yet. Shimoda came off as a great bully and Mita came off as sadistic. The crowd brawling was fun as was Shimoda running one of the opponents into the wall (I didn't google who was who on that team). The mid-match comeback was fun only to lead to a little more crowd brawling. Shimoda's pulling her opponent out of the pinfall twice only to have the referee stop it was awesome -
I found this to be a little slow. Kakihara and Kikuchi had some fun exchanges early. I liked Smith's control section and then Misawa and Taue had a fun exchange as well. Otherwise, this was lesser AJPW six-man work to me

I really enjoyed this. Kanemaru has never done much for me but here he was quite good, starting with the epic headbutt to Omori's nether-regions, continuing through the beating he took from Takayama and Omori and then finishing with his firey finishing stretch before getting pinned by Asako. Speaking of Asako, the working over of his knee by Burning was phenomenal making his win that much more impressive. Really fun to see Takayama able to move around here. Omori was great then and really now. And Kobashi and Akiyama were in their primes (although I guess in some ways Akiyama still is) so it would be hard to go wrong with this. And the knee to Kobashi's gut by Takayama was stiff and awesome.

This didn't do a whole lot for me and I think that it just might be dated for me. It didn't really have creativity in my mind although i liked the top-rope rana through the barbed wire table on the floor by Honma. Probably my favorite thing is the finish with the big forearm smash into a tight pin by Honma.

It says a lot about a match when you can go in with no background and immediately sense the grudge. Bucanero worked over Tarzan for the first two falls with The Boy being great at working underneath and bleeding. The match turned on a dime after TB won the second fall with a small package. Bucanero then showed his aptitude for bleeding and selling. The two went back and forth for the final fall and TB hit a great tope con giro. A great lucha brawl. Satanico was a champ at ringside

I thought the exchanges between Solar and VIolencia in the first fall looked a little rough but they both did much better in the rest of the match. I really liked Solar's backbreakers and surfboard in the third fall as well as his tope. I enjoyed Antifaz and this is a good way to expand my knowledge of him beyond being a guy I once saw in ECW. His dive in the third fall was great. Zumbido was a stand-out in this match holding things together and I liked his corkscrew elbowdrops.

[2000-01-01-TWA-Total Impact TV] American Dragon vs Spanky
puropotsy replied to Loss's topic in January 2000
I'd say both guys looked great here with Spanky seeming to be a little ahead of Dragon at the time. Spanky's flying was great and Iove that a move was referred to as a Spankensteiner. Dragon's clotheslines were pretty stiff and his dragon suplex was a thing of beauty.
