  1. Yeah I get that Loss, what I'm saying is that you can take the idea that WCW fans appreciated good wrestling too far too given that they popped for the likes of Sid. It's not like they were a bunch of purists or anything.
  2. It's possible to push this too far though. For example, Ice Train was really really over in that same period. The Road Warriors were massively over in the height of the Crockett era. Sid consistently gets massive pops from the minute of his debut in NWA. Good wrestling was one thing they popped for, but they also reacted to big roided up dudes who couldn't work. That said, Loss has hit on something with the "show-stealing midcard matches" distinction. Orient Express vs. Rockers? Can't really think of many others. That's the WWF equivalent of a hot US Tag title match.
  3. The ipage site is back up and running too. At least for now.
  4. Loss - the thing I was trying to get at with my first post up there was: how many of those 92-3 WCW fans were still around by 96-7? Didn't the 94-5 period kill off a lot of the old Crockett hardcores by alienating them so heavily with Hogan and friends? And, by the same token, were the WWF fans not sort of "re-trained" by the Bret years during the same time frame? I don't know that the old split still applies by the Monday Night Wars. Does it? Another question to ask would be how fast can fans be "re-trained". Think of the Backlund era where fans at MSG would be sitting through technical 60 minute draws. What happened to THOSE fans by 1985?
  5. Hi guys, I've run into a problem with my web hosts over the past few months. New eps of Where the Big Boys Play receive too many hits and once it reaches a certain threshold they suspend the site without warning. I've tried to work this out with them, but looks like the best solution will be to leave and find a new server. SoundCloud is one of the options we are looking at. As a little trial run and a workaround, I've uploaded the first Titans show to this: https://soundcloud.com/jerryvonkramer/titan...restling-1-wwwf Should we make this switch, access to old WTBBP shows will be limited until I can re-upload them all.
  6. Are you really wading into this frivolous little thread to try to prove I'm so stupid that I didn't know Brezhnev was dead in 1983? Serious? Fuck it, I'll pull the plug on it. Where your particular brand of pettiness rears its head, I take my exit.
  7. Here's what interests me about this: Your NWA fan was brought up on a wrestling centred product in which a strong match was appreicated. Your WWF was brought up on rock n wrestling. In 1994, Hogan went to WCW and Eric tried to turn the promotion into WWF circa 1986. The same year, Bret Hart was put over strong as a wrestling champ in WWF. By 1995 both companies were in virtual no man's land with Diesel vs. Mabel and the attack of the evil dentist in WWF and Hogan vs. endless members of the Dungeon of Doom in WCW. So by 1996, how much are both companies in a kind of "ground zero" where the "training of the fans" has essentially be undone? I'm not sure if I've put that very well, but how many of the guys who were "trained" to watch the product of Flair vs. whoever in the 80s stuck through the 94-5 Hogan stuff? How many of the guys who were "trained" on Hogan vs. whoever in the 80s stuck through the 94-5 Bret or Diesel stuff? Seems to me that you get some sort of reset there for both companies.
  8. February - Week 3 Ivan Koloff vs. Butch Reed Reed dominates the early going and Ivan bails to break the momentum. The commentators put over the fact that he seems out of sorts. As he stops to jaw with a fan, Markov walks down to ringside wearing a brown uniform. On his lapel is a big letter "K". The commentators wonder who this mysterious uniformed stranger might be. He's obviously from the USSR and here to see Ivan, they can work that much out. Meanwhile, Koloff has got back in the ring but he's visibly distracted by this interloper. He's taking a beating from Reed. Reed Irish whips Ivan into the ropes where Markov is standing and he trips him! The commentators are shocked. Even Butch Reed does a double take. However, the ref saw it! Instant for Reed, who is pissed off now. Ivan bails shaking his head as he walks back to the locker room. Markov does a smarmy grin. Crowd is not happy. February - week 4 Ivan Koloff vs. Paul Orndorff - Russian Chain match This match had been in the making for some time. And shilled quite a bit over the past two or three months. Remember that Breznev had mentioned Orndorff by name. They start out tentatively, and after a while Orndroff gets the better of it and drags Ivan to two turnbuckles. He can't make the third however. Ivan manages to take control and during this segment, two men in brown uniforms (Malenko and Wiskowski) appear at ringside. Wiskowski has a giant "G" on his lapel, Malenko a giant "B". They just stand there staring at the match blankly. Ivan again is distracted which allows Orndorff to gain control and get to three turnbuckles. Ivan manages to cut him off. The commentators put over how he's still "master of the Russian chain match". Both men have colour by this stage. Over the next few minutes, whenever Orndorff is on offense, the mysterious uniformed men, who are called "G and B" by the commentators show their disapproval. Eventually, Orndorff fires up and it's all over for Ivan, he drags him to all four turnbuckles and leaves him in a bloody heap in the corner. Markov appears now and he has a microphone. "Comrade. Comrade. It is me, Kolenka. Gregori! Boris! You have your orders" "G and B" now get into the ring and start stomping on the defeated Ivan. The crowd start to boo. "K" carries on talking: "You have disgraced your country Comrade. You are ... finished." "G and B" drag Ivan out of the ring. "K" produces a large black sack and they bundle Ivan into this and drag him off to the back. Everyone is shocked.
  9. I like Brezhnev much more than Andropov as my stereotypical Soviet Premier. The sort of character Brezhnev was works much better for my narrative. I simply do not care that he happened to be dead at the time.
  10. Guys not mentioned in this thread: Flair, Steamboat, Garvin, Wahoo, Tenryu. Really like some of Bock's gut punches. Teddy Long has kicks that are as bad as Albano's.
  11. Wow, that was quick. Range of answers are by no means unanimous. (hardcore fan) (uncle) (tennis fan) (fairly hardcore) (two more casual fans) Still not got an answer from the most hardcore of my friends, but it's safe to say that there's no real consensus here. Really surprised to see the variation on the French.
  12. I'm in no-way anything more than the lightest of casual fans of either tennis or golf, but my old school friends are pretty hardcore for both and all sports. And my uncle is a big golf guy who used to work on Shinnecock Hills. I have another mate who is so hardcore into golf he uses his annual leave to watch majors and has been known not to leave the house at all for 4 days. I also remember he left Facebook once when people gave him stick over Nadal beating Federer. I fired off a couple of texts when I read this, but my immediate assumption is that the Australian and PGA are the respective 4ths. In golf, The Open is almost always presented as the most prestigious but you could see arguments for the US Masters, and I'd put it as a dead rubber with US Open pretty safely in at 3. I'd expect tennis to go 1. Wimbledon, 2. US, 3. French, 4. Australian. I'll report back what my mates say, but I'd expect them to produce list pretty much exactly along those lines. I am interested though. Actually I might has well whack this in a facebook message and see what happens. May cause a few arguments!
  13. In this new podcast, James (aka Brickhithouse) and myself focus on an under-appreciated era in WWF's history: 1979-83. Starting in January 1979, each week the show discusses some of the matches and angles that took place during this time frame. It will also provide histories for the wrestlers of this era. http://placetobenation.com/titans-of-wrest...-to-march-1979/ On the docket tonight: 01-27 LARRY ZBYSZKO vs JOHNNY VALIANT ALL STAR WRESTLING 01-27 LARRY ZBYSZKO vs IVAN KOLOFF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING 02-79 BOB BACKLUND, GREG VALENTINE/WIZARD PROMOS WWF TV 02-19 BOB BACKLUND vs GREG VALENTINE WWF TITLE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 03-24 TONY GAREA/LARRY ZBYSZKO vs VALIANTS TAG TITLE CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING 03-26 BOB BACKLUND vs GREG VALENTINE WWF TITLE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN Some other topics include: - James's background as a fan and his reasons for making the 79-83 WWF comp - The Three Wise Men of the East - Arnold Skaaland and his cushy job - The many partners of Tony Garea - Late 80s Vince's evil conspiracy to bury the atomic drop as a finisher - How cards were structured and whether we can truly credit Backlund with drawing during his reign (and considering Larry Matysik's take)
  14. I think the disaster that was ITV Digital still probably looms large among ITV top brass and it's easy to imagine them being very risk averse when it comes to launching new channels. That said ITV Sport runs as a semi-autonomous production company, so it's not such a giant leap. Also they've utilised ITV 4 especially for overspill and that would be a natural home for any WoS B-show and also to re-run original WoS. By the looks of things, this one-off show will serve as a pilot. It's hard to see how that is going to be successful. The weirdest thing about all this for me is the timing. Why now? I don't get the impression there's any groundswell of nostalgia for the old product. The boat for THAT sailed a long time ago: the core market would be mainly men in their 40s. We're now sort of past the point of peak 80s nostalgia and 80s kids nostalgia (I'd point to about 2005-6), so god knows when peak 70s nostalgia was. People are starting to look back to the 90s fondly. I reckon there are probably two waves of nostalgia for a given period -- when people hit their early 20s and look back on their childhoods and then again when an older set of people hit their 30s and look back on their teenage years. I'd posit that from the general nostalgia for a given thing, you then get a core of people who develop it into a hardcore interest, in much the way many of us on this board have done with wrestling. I think WoS is at the stage in its life cycle where you're mainly left with just those hardcores. So that's what I'm not getting here: who is this aimed at?
  15. Very strange commentary team here. I did like how heated things got just before the finish. Kind of interesting in a face vs. face setting. I wonder which team would have been more turnable at this time. Interesting also that they were sort of booked as equals here.
  16. As amusing as the Dundee height gags are, I do wonder if Lawler is breaking one of the cardinal rules by pointing to something that is actually true. Always feel like he's sort of burying the opponents. He even criticises his own partner here. Of course, Terrence Garvin deserves all the criticism he can get.
  17. ALL WWF SUPERSTARS ARE HIGHLY TRAINED PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, DO NOT IMMITATE OR COPY THEIR PERFORMANCES OR ACTIONS Buy this video and learn how to kick the crap out of your brother properly using the cushions from the setee as your ring!
  18. Whether it is Regal, Davey Boy or whoever, I am always completely jarred when I hear a regular English voice on an American wrestling show. Lord Alfred Hayes doesn't count by the way.
  19. Ole is one of the great underrated promo guys. Not the best Flair interview in the world though.
  20. Where did Cruise come from here? His voice is a tiny bit like Tony Schiavone's. Morton and Eaton trading big punches was great here. Lane totally nailes a scoop powerslam on Morton. Cornette nails Morton with the tennis racket before mugging for the camera as if he wants to say hi to him mum -- great work from him. "He sneaked in there like a slimy worm" - Funk Crowd is weirdly dead for this. Big bump from Eaton to the outside. Finally we get a "rock n roll" chant from the crowd. Typically MX finish. I do like the way Funk is calling Cruise "Crispy" all the time.
  21. It's great that they framed the ad in that way. I can imagine most promotions would just run it dryly and seriously.
  22. Fun for all the family with Jerry Lawler. You know that that kid got some milage out of that zoo gag in school for the next month or two.
  23. His accent alone is amazing. Poor Brian Lee has had a rough ride in this thread, he did a good job -- didn't drop the mic once.
