J-Tex was Terry Funk and Muta to start. Then Dick Slater subbed for Funk. Slater left. Then "Mr. J", Dragon Master came in, in one of the most underwhelming debuts I've ever seen. Terry Funk turned face. Then Buzz Sawyer was added. Then Gary Hart left. I literally can't get my head around what the grouping of Muta, Buzz Sawyer and Dragon Master were meant to be or represent in Feburary 1990 (in kayfabe terms). I have no idea what a fan of that period was meant to think Buzz Sawyer thought in his mind. It is such a confusing stable.

That makes a bit more sense. Tieing up something from earlier in the thread: maybe this could have been a place to use Ranger Ross and his deadly martial arts skills. Stick him in a mask with gloves on and let him go wild with his karate kicks. Learn something new every day on this board: The Orient Express were formed as a by-product of WWF messing up the J-Tex corporation. The J-Tex Corporation is probably the most ill-conceived and confusing stable in wrestling history.

Hiro couldn't talk though and brought precisely nothing to the table and ended up essentially getting replaced by Gary Hart. What's the point of a manager who can't do promos? Hiro wasn't even good at schtick like Mr. Fuji. There must have been a willing Japanese guy with more name value than the fake Kendo Nagasaki, surely. He looks completely out of place in the ring with Flair, Arn and co. What was Saito doing in late 1989? Literally anyone would have been better in that spot than Dragon Master. Shit put Jack Victory in a ninja mask, they did it for every other hole in the card.

2 late 80s NWA ones: 1. Hiro Matsuda as JJ Dillon's replacement. 2. The Dragon Master. Of all the Japanese wrestlers in the world to bring in, why him?

Wrestling Culture Episode 45
JerryvonKramer replied to puropotsy's topic in Publications and Podcasts
How exciting. I suspect this DVD will be an instant purchase for many of us here and I'm really glad you guys are talking to Mike Elliott. I'm sure the interview with Jim Crockett alone will be worth the price. I will pick up his NWA one too, I didn't know about it until yesterday. Downloading now. -

Awesome, awesome article that has blown my mind. Barry Norman fronted the Seoul Olympics coverage? Sumo wrestling was shown on Channel 4? There was televised Kabaddi??!!! Australian Rules Football was on?! It's too much to take in one sitting. -

Were the Death of the Territories in the 80s Inevitable?
JerryvonKramer replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
This is great stuff Johnny Guitar. Do you think a crowd of 7,500 in Detroit in 1988 is actually really impressive? I think it's borderline astonishing given that sometimes they'd struggle to do those sort of numbers at The Omni. -
Would Steve Austin be looked at like HHH with longer time?
JerryvonKramer replied to Smack2k's topic in The Microscope
I guess Dusty is the elephant lurking in the room here. Reading Meltzer in 88 and 89, it seems like a lot of hardcore fans were sick of him and pretty much hated him by that stage, despite his charisma levels. However, I don't think the resentment against Dusty was as long lasting as it might have been because of those same charisma levels: easier to forgive a guy like that than I guy who is less likable. With HHH, we have to say it's a combination of low charisma (disposition of people to not like him anyway), talent vs. position on roster (proportionally unfair) and self-booking (resentment of narcissism). He's hitting three intuitive trigger points that are going to get people's backs up. -
Crowdsourcing: Ric Flair drinking/spending stories
JerryvonKramer replied to evilclown's topic in Pro Wrestling
Worked well insomuch as he's still living the sort of life he thinks he wants (flash lifestyle, bars etc.) Once you start applying different measures from that, then naturally it's less successful. -

What's debt to a man who is dead? Flair's strategy to life has worked for him thus far, and will be justified by its own terms unless he ends up in jail -
Would Steve Austin be looked at like HHH with longer time?
JerryvonKramer replied to Smack2k's topic in The Microscope
Don't think I've ever been against anything as much in my life as HHH in DX. It would be like Carlton Banks being a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Actually, that gives DX too much credit. It would be like Carlton Banks being a member of 5ive. Apologies if that reference is too obscure for most here. Let's say Limp Bizkit. -

I can't stand the original DX stuff. I was watching one of the Legends of Wrestling shows when they played the footage of them coming out as the Nation of Domination when HHH was The Rock. I was forced to fast-forward it. My skin was crawling, so so cringeworthy. Someone so unfunny trying to be funny. David Brent in The Office levels of cringe. -
My thought was that sharing this schedule with you guys rather than keeping it private will give some sort of incentive / punative mechanism to stick to it. If I fail, anarchistxx can say "I told you so". How will you know if I fail? Well, if there's no posts in the relevant threads I'll be making for Midsouth and New Japan, or in the Yearbook threads, then that's a strong indication I'm not doing the watching. If there's no podcast, however, it's 99% likely that it's Chad's fault.

That is true. However, there are probably 4 or 5 Offices or House of Cards to every 1 Killing; I think there are more American remakes of British shows than other shows. Perhaps because of language, British music artists are also overrepresented in the American charts. However, as a rule you are probably right that Americans don't really give a shit about our shows. -

I think it will take longer for the US because it has more power, more people, more patriotism and more insularity, but it is interesting to me that the rise of NFL here is being mirrored by a rise in soccer over there. Whether that means one day Americans can watch and accept shows where all the people have British accents is another matter, but it's a possibility. -

Also, on a side note, NFL has been steadily growing in this country for the past decade. Made a few strides in the past couple of years. I mean, sure, most people still don't give a shit, but I think the last Super Bowl was much bigger news than, let's say, one 10 years ago. I think this is a consequence of the world getting smaller because of the internet and people are less parochial than they used to be. I have wondered if it might lead to a situation where the US stop taking our shows and remaking them in their own image as more and more people see the original product because of internet buzz. For example, what if The Office had come out now rather than in 2001. Would a bigger base of Americans have seen it? This is something we will see play out in our lifetimes. -

It's true. Actually, Germany has probably now replaced Italy as the third big league in Europe, which is a real shame given how there was a time when it was definitely number 1. Goaallllllllll AAAAZZZiiiiooo We should stop before Will's head explodes. He hates me talking football, I mean soccer.
