Seems like a major miss. Would you for sure be voting for him? I'll have to bring this up with the board. Not necessarily. I am considering him for the very back end of my ballot, but I haven't finalized anything yet.

One of my absolute least favorite wrestlers. I can't bring myself to watch him unless ironically its in the awful tag team with Hayes which I find amusing at times simply because it seems like its their gimmick to suck and be out of touch even if that wasn't the original intention.

Its weird that no one is acknowledging how much Kandori whiffed on that strike at the peak of the match. Apparently we missed the most awkward part as they messed up the sequence so bad the cameras had to cut away. This is only the 3rd joshi match I've watched all the way through and while I liked parts, the match was structured weird. Strange overall but certainly cinematic at times.

If we are talking about the Starrcade '84 match with Steamboat, I think there are a lot of people who find that match disappointing.

I would take Windham over Ted without even thinking about it. I also think Windham is a top 20 wrestler despite having an overall disappointing if underrated career. Ted is a guy who can go out and fill any role on the card effectively. Windham is a guy who can go out and do anything and everything (in the ring.)

Also, I'm not knocking Triple H for being in a bunch of gimmick matches. I'm just pointing out that those are the ones that seem to stand out and it's not like he is doing anything special with them. Why doesn't he have more matches that stand out simply for being good?

There are a lot more bells and whistles involved with your typical gimmick match. Part of being a great wrestler is being able to go out and have great matches without all that. If you can't go out and do something memorable without all the special effects, how good of a wrestler are you really? I don't knock a guy for being involved in gimmick matches, you still have to make them work. My point is that Triple H doesn't have very many memorable non-gimmick matches for a reason. Gimmick matches stand out. Great matches stand out. His stand out matches are almost all gimmicky and in my eyes, overrated.

This is a guy with more big matches than almost anyone in the last two decades. His whole career is pretty much on tape and he had the the advantage of being in the main event and an input on the booking. With that said, 10 very good to great matches is not much of an accomplishment. In comparison to his peers how many memorable/great matches does he have from the time period that actually hold up? What is his ratio of huge disappointments to very good or just good matches? He has consistently failed to put out quality despite being in the marquee matchup on a huge number of shows and his "great" matches don't really hold up. How many good non-gimmick matches does he have?

For Fujinami I would say 79-89. He was out for most of 1990 and wasn't the same when he returned, whereas in 1979 he was already producing great matches like the ones he had with Ryuma Go that we have on tape.

??? This Japan thread has been one of the more surprising to me since this whole GWE deal started. Specifically by the end of 1993. Let me clarify. He's obviously the biggest star of the bunch by then. I mean that as far as producing quality work, he's behind Kawada in my eyes. They started around the same time and Kawada was better faster and I like his work up to that point more than Misawa's. Misawa wasn't very good until 1990 and by 1993 Taue and Kobashi have produced a better body of work in their first few years than Misawa did in his first few.

Amazing wrestler who could adapt to the needs of a match even if that meant playing a vicious heel bully despite being the tiniest guy almost every time out. Yoji Anjoh and Masa Saito are right up there too if they count. Who was the best at their peak? Probably Fujinami or Tenry in 89. Who has disappointed you the most? Possibly Misawa? I'm going back from the 80s through the 90s in my Japan watching and here at the end of 93, Misawa is behind the other 3 All Japan Pillars as far as career output goes. Tiger Mask was weak, then Misawa seemed like the best of the bunch in 1990 and has been stagnant since. Taue and Kobashi got really good really fast. Scratch that, Mutoh. So much potential, so little actually going on.

My theory on Kimura is that the guy had what it took to be great, but unless he was getting pushed or working with top talent he wasn't motivated and mailed it in. He has a lot of highs but he was really inconsistent. I think by the 90s when the next generation was betting pushed to the top he realized his chances at a push were over and his work reflected that.

It's Fujinami for me. Then Lawler and Flair. Hansen and then Jumbo. Actually you could probably switch Hansen and Flair. I don't know. Fujinami was great from the outset to the very end when he went down with a back injury. What I want out of wrestling I get from Fujinami in this time frame. I love the struggle for control in his matches. His biggest drawback is that he wasn't a great brawler.
