Maybe NWO was getting too big with the mid card additions but it is still strong at the top with Hogan. He cuts a fun, arrogant, over the top promo in front of a rabid crowd.

Why does Bischoff need to do a paid NWO promo when he is still president of WCW? Unless he has been replaced but I does not think that has happened yet. Liz does not seem too impressed with Bischoff.

Savage makes his return to a big crowd response. He wants to Bischoff to know he can kiss his ass. He does a sit down in the ring. Come on Chavo, why you going to try mess things up with Savage of all people. Crowd are hot for Savage. Doug Dillinger was smart enough to get out of there once he was pushed down. Fabulous French Canadiens!

[1997-01-20-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs The Undertaker
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Vader has a good stretch here beating Hart on Raw and then Undertaker at Rumble. No wimpy Robin Hood here. The four Final Four contestants brawl it out.- 10 replies

[1997-01-20-WWF-Raw] Gorilla Monsoon, Steve Austin and Bret Hart
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Gorilla getting some boos from the crowd. I want to say WWF was the frontrunner of fans hating on commissioners/presidents of sports leagues. Monsoon is upset at Bret quitting. He declares Austin the official winner of the Rumble. Gorilla sets up a four man elimination match at In Your House with Undertaker/Vader/Hart/Austin. They actually make sense about Diesel not being involved as Undertaker/Vader/Hart are all in as they were illegally eliminated by Austin. Bret returns to accept his spot in four way match. -
Here is Bret! He has got something to say. Has some words for Vince McMahon. Bret has had it with the actions of Michaels and Austin. Always got a kick out of Bret referring to Michaels as the Boy Toy. "Where is my opportunity?" Bret has been screwed by Shawn Michaels. He has been screwed by Steve Austin. He has been screwed by World Wrestling Federation. He has been screwed by Vince McMahon. Fascinating to watch and it is only January. Bret quits! Yes, some whining by Bret but still has the fans mostly behind him. Austin makes a quick appearance after to take some shots at Bret.

[1997-01-20-AJW-Zenjo Perfection] Kyoko Inoue vs Takako Inoue
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Yuck. What a bad botch by the referee on counting that pin fall originally. It is January and I feel like I'm already done with Joshi.- 14 replies

I thought this match took place in Budokan. Kobashi was throwing the head dropping suplexes around. They are blocking each others big strikes. Kobashi was not even close to having his shoulders down on that Tiger Driver. These guys are just throwing huge bombs at each other. Love the struggle to apply the Tiger Suplex. Kobashi kicks out of Tiger Driver 91! Heck of a match for sure. I don't think it will beat my favorite WWF matches of the year but it's a contender.

[1997-01-20-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Jun Akiyama vs Akira Taue
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Nice start with Jun catching the ropes and blocking the snake eyes and then Taue avoiding a dropkick. Taue just launches Akiyama with a release German suplex. Wow, that finish came fast. Heck of a short match and always nice with AJPW mixes things up. Big win for Jun.- 8 replies

Okay so I was there live for this show and I just now stumble across NBC showing some special of the event. We are in mid Cena versus Rock match and immediately it seems like both guys look so sluggish in the ring. I must have been really drunk at the show as it didn't feel like they were moving this slow. The way this is being shown they have managed to make the 80K plus fans in attendance look like a typical Raw show with only 15,000 or so. I hate how WWE lights their shows. I have yet to watch the official Blu Ray of show but this looks really poor overall. Crowd finally rises for the People's Elbow. When match got going NBC cut to a commercial. Finisher, finisher, reversal, your finisher, finisher, reversal, reversal, reversal, reversal, reversal, finisher. Worse than I remember.

[1997-01-19-WWF-Royal Rumble] Shawn Michaels vs Sid
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
With Shawn being the hometown guy they still have the champion Sid enter second. Shawn's parents are no Helen and Stu though mom does seem to be trying to cheer him on at times. Michaels recovered too fast from that powerbomb on the floor. Sid grabs both Lotharios but Pat Patterson saves them. They use the camera finish from Survivor Series which is a good touch. Sid takes a wicked superkick which I think he got a concussion from. It is an alright match but lacks the charm of the Survivor Series match which had the NYC fans turning on Michaels and Sid nailing Lothario with the camera just for the heck of it. Shawn celebrates with family and friends after winning title. -
The crowd looks huge which we have not seen since Summerslam 92. Poor Ahmed had a match earlier in the night and then drew the second spot. That is not too promising for him winning. They mess up the count down clock right from the start which the crowd boos and boos even more when that entrant is fake Razor. He is eliminated right away and then Johnson pulls a Randy Savage and jumps over the ropes to his own elimination when he chases after Farooq. Here is Austin who draws the fifth spot. They only seemed to let guys who drew number one win from the earlier spots. Everything else felt like guys who drew late spots in the 20s. I think Austin winning at number five is just as impressive and seems ignored that he lasted so long. The clock finally gets working right as Austin goes on the Diesel streak of running through guys. Bart Gunn does a woeful Rocker Dropper on Austin. Vince politely says that execution sucked. Bulldog arrives to stop Austin's streak. Pierroth becomes our first AAA member. Vince talks about Doc Hendrix picking Pierroth as a favorite to win. Lawler dreams of someone unmasking Mil Mascaras during the Rumble. Owen brings his Slammy to the ring which gives me a good laugh. He ends up eliminating Bulldog and they tease issues between them further. Bulldog felt like a complete face in this match. Goldust and Triple H draw early spots too after wrestling on undercard. Mascaras has one of the all time dumbest eliminations when he tosses out Pierroth, climbs to the top rope and dives to the outside on Pierroth. Reeks of him not wanting to be eliminated by somebody else. I always get a kick out of Latin Lover entering the ring and superkicking Goldust in the ass. Vince, "Oh, right in the keyster! Ha ha ha" Faarooq does not last long as Johnson brings out a huge piece of timber to run Faarooq off. Duggan must have been jealous. Ring clears out and we are back to Austin by himself. Austin getting more crowd support as match goes on. Here is Bret and Austin's response is fantastic. I love him going all bug eyed and mouth open in shock the second Bret's music hits. Lawler has very brief appearance which is hilarious. Ross is pushing the whole Bret thinks he should not even have to compete in Rumble since he should be champion. Setting the seeds there. Star power picks up with Terry Funk, Rocky and Mankind entering in consecutive spots. Flash Funk goes up to the top rope to dive on to Fake Diesel and Terry Funk runs over to this so he can apart of the spot. That looked so funny. Vader and Undertaker in and the ring is the most filled. Vader eliminating Flash Funk was nasty. Terry Funk and Mankind brawl outside which distracts all the referees. Bret eliminates Austin! Austin wisely sees that no referees saw him being eliminated and jumps back in the ring. He eliminates both Undertaker and Vader from behind. This leaves just Bret and Diesel left. Why did Diesel get overlooked in the Final Four PPV? Bret eliminates Diesel and there is Austin to pick of Bret from behind. Great finish. Bret is not pleased. Vince, "Imagine Bret Hart. What must be going through his mind.". Bret gets very aggressive with the officials and Vince McMahon. He wants to know what Vince is going to do about the Rumble finish. McMahon talks about unsportsmanlike conduct. Rumble had a slow start as outside of Austin and maybe Bulldog they kept the bigger names until the finish. Strong finish though and found it overall to be entertaining. One of the better Rumbles of the late 90s.

[1997-01-18-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Goldust
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Goldust must have gave birth. Ross actually mentions it must have been a fake. Not much of a match but more a preview of the Rumble with everyone hitting the ring. Funk ends up in water basin. I've enjoyed reliving these clips from Shotgun. Not everything was great but it was something different than what WWF was doing at the time.- 11 replies

[1997-01-18-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Steve Austin and Terry Funk
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
If we only got a few more minutes of them brawling. Funk was great on the mic taking shots at WCW and McMahon. They gave him some freedom there letting Terry talk so much on the mic. Credit to McMahon to allow Terry to be Terry.- 13 replies

Big BWO chants from the crowd. Stevie was over with the ECW fans. Richards gets into it with Raven. He missed a superkick and hits Sandman but later nails Raven with one. Stevie awards Sandman with a BWO shirt but he ends up just leaving it in the ring. Did not feel like an official match since there was no referee.

Morton feels so out of place in this type of match against the Gangstas in ECW. Though I do remember their matches from SMW which war not bad. This is just guys hitting each other with weapons for a few brief minutes. Nothing that will get the needed sympathy on Morton with this crowd.

[1997-01-18-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Psicosis
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Too bad it was so short as I liked the early battle of the wristlock which they had to abandon due to the time constraints. Regal busting out the dropkick on a counter was great. The reverse suplex was a perfect set up move for the Regal Stretch. Good quick match.- 6 replies

[1997-01-18-USWA-TV] PG-13 vs Flash Flanagan & Steven Dunn
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
The studio is all jazzed up with new desk and checkerboard on floor around the ring. PG-13 was throwing all the cheating sequences they could at the end. -
Johnny performed the Ace Crusher better over time. Williams was not much involved from a the few minutes that was shown.

Ross would always talk about La Femme Nikita (show on USA) being tougher than that skinny legged Robin Hood. I think he was trying to tell him to get on the juice. Tony right away lets us know there is only a few minutes left in the show and sets things up that they will show the match during commercial breaks of Robin Hood. Hogan gets on the mic to waste time. Maybe WWE will release the unedited 50 minute match some day.

[1997-01-13-WCW-Nitro] Diamond Dallas Page and The Outsiders
Kevin Ridge replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Thing I take away from this every time I see is when Nash flips the table it looks to have hit some young kid in the front row. Looked so dangerous. Big moment for DDP though with getting the upper hand on the Outsiders and hitting a big Cutter on Hall.- 14 replies
