Paul E delivers a great promo on why Anderson & Eaton are better than the Steiners, with an assist from Anderson and his phenomenal glasses.

No, I'm just not confusing "title match in the middle of the card" for "main event." I staunchly agree that Rock/Cena needs to be kept one on one. Undertaker not being fit for the proposed Punk/Undertaker match is not justification for me to sabotage the Rock/Cena rematch wherein Cena takes the title and gets his win back from Rock, which was the best explanation for the nostalgia act beating the top guy last year in the first place. Cena retaking the title in a three way affords him negligible bragging rights compared to beating Rocky one on one. Worse still, Punk could take the fall and it looks like Cena is incapable of beating The Rock. Find something else for Punk to do. There isn't anything else compelling for Punk to do. Entirely possible. And if that's really the case, I'd rather leave him off the card entirely.

Larry Matysik's 50 Greatest Professional Wrestlers
WingedEagle replied to Al's topic in Megathread archive
The case for Londos is his record as a draw. I don't have the numbers handy but its pretty plain when the data is in front of you. From a business standpoint, I think Austin is someone who's potentially underrated. You can certainly argue there is no publicly traded wrestling company without him and that capitalization, more than any number of record buyrates, house shows or merchandise is an incredible asset to the company's ability to withstand subsequent flows in business and build more stable revenue streams. -
I don't think you do a rubber match, and whatever you do, Rock needs to be special. We don't yet know how much he spiked the EC buyrate but I'd hold him out until Summerslam if not Mania next year. Brock is still effective because when he comes out he's an attraction, not another guy on the roster. You need to preserve Rock in the same fashion.
-
Those are 4 triple threat matches at Mania, but only in 2004 was it the #1 match, and in that case you had special circumstances with Benoit getting the super push, as well as a ridiculously stacked show featuring Eddy/Angle, Rock's first match in a year and Brock/Goldberg with Austin as ref. That is not the case now. Plus Cena vs. Rock should be a stronger issue one on one without someone else running interference on the hard sell.
-
I still think they can run just about anything underneath Rock vs. Cena. I don't have quite that same confidence if they muddy the waters with a 3 way where the only other mainstream match is Brock vs. HHH.

This needs to be revived. I have to go Inoki vs. Vader 1/4/96 as I haven't seen the 80s NJ set so I'm probably missing most of his best work.

Konnan talked about this period on a recent MLW podcast. Nash basically took the opportunity to see just how much he could get away with and found the answer was quite a lot.

Great recap of the angle with Liz taking a punch to start and then as a blowoff this is hot and intense for the entire run. Savage is out of control and looking like a certifiable lunatic. Highlight was Jake selling an axehandle to the floor as though it crushed his throat, which set up the elbow for the pin. **3/4

After the great backstage promo recapped above, Sid is out and telegraphing his turn basically from the start. It is awesome despite, or perhaps, because of that. Taker bumps well for Hogan who doesn't fail to generate excellent heat throughout. Sid walks out after passing on a tag and for some reason Hogan still needs to pick up a DQ win rather than take the fall facing two against one odds. There's half of your mania main event. **1/2

[1992-02-08-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett and The Moondogs
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Lawler & Jarrett are out and dressed up to deliver a promo against the moondogs, who interrupt and we get another awesome brawl for a few minutes which sees the faces get their comeback before the newest dog comes out at the end. -
I believe the singles match in '86 was on the DVDVR set. Really fun match.

[1992-02-08-USWA-TV] Eric Embry/Dirty White Boy feud recap
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
I've said it before but Embry is one of the biggest trashbag heels I've seen. They replay clips of the strapping at MSC that we saw earlier, along with DWG getting stripped and whipped before the faces do some of their own whipping back at the Mid South. Interesting to contrast DWB as a heel in SMW vs. as a face here. Never would've imagined he'd be so much more effective as a babyface. -
[1992-02-08-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Ric Flair & Mr Perfect

Basic Flair promo setting up the SNME tag. Totally agree with shoe here as I feel like there are a bunch of promos where Flair ends up with a bloody mouth. I wonder how often that was intentional. -
[1992-02-08-NJPW-Fighting Spirit] Jushin Liger vs Norio Honaga
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Sometimes its helpful to read what others thought about a match as it can give you some perspective and things to look for. On other occasions it can set unrealistic expectations and can create an almost unnatural viewing of the match. I didn't remember a ton about Honaga after burning through a ton of NJ '90s junior HW stuff a while ago, so after reading some of the comments by Loss and others I was really looking forward to this and almost planning on being blown away. Unfortunately, that just didn't happen. I certainly enjoyed this, from Liger's palm thrusts sending Honaga to the floor to them working heavyweight style with Honaga grinding Liger's ribs before setting up some typical high spots. It felt a little slow and less explosive than the classic jr. HW matches I recalled and nowhere near as epic as some others. We'll see if I'm selling the whole division short as things progress (I'm a couple weeks away from my all time favorite Liger match) or if this was simply no better than a pretty good match. ***1/2- 20 replies

[1992-02-08-WCW-Power Hour] Steve Austin vs Ricky Steamboat
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Steamboat never failed to deliver with Austin, and this was no exception. They give you what you want for a 10 minute draw, which is a hot opening trading near falls before building to neither man being able to close the deal. That was all well and good, but Ross's plugs for free Blimpie at upcoming tv tapings is about as close to bush league as it gets. ***- 12 replies

Really enjoyed this, from the early Fujinami/Hase exchanges onwards with only Chono ever looking a bit of his league. The other 3 delivered their signature spots with Hase throwing out a bunch of suplexes, uranage, scorpion and giant swing and Kosh with his butt bumps. Nice to see Fujinami still hanging with these guys after what he'd been through in previous years. ***3/4

Sound technical work early. While I can appreciate what they were doing on the mat, most of it just wasn't clicking for me. While early on I was caught off guard by how quickly the first couple falls in some lucha matches would conclude, its no longer feeling quite as strange as it did initially (up to about mid-April on the yearbook). Canek did a good job selling Caras' work on his knee from the second fall into the third before finishing with a rana where the execution looked a bit off. **3/4

And I miss 1 on 1 mania main events. I feel like the air was just let out of the show.

Regardless of how over his entrance music and finisher may be, I have faith that they will simply not commit to someone with 2 wellness policy violations. They can anchor a 2 hour tv around him but its not worth putting part of a buy rate on his shoulders. I've also got no problem with that. Swagger & Dutch are a unique gimmick and no matter how natural a fit that gimmick may be with an ADR world champion, I don't believe that's something that will draw a buy rate. Regardless, I suckered 3 friends into buying mania tickets so I will be there!

Where the Big Boys Play #36
WingedEagle replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Chi-Town Wrestle War Clash Clash is 20+ of intensity and go go go awesomeness. Wrestle War is epic and has the post match angle. Clash VI simply doesn't, and basically loses by default through no fault of its own other than when it occurred on the calendar. -
Ugh. I'm out.
